HARM REDUCTION ALERT

A Public Forum on Harm Reduction

Harm reduction is working. Programs and projects that aim to reduce
health, social and economic harms associated with drug use have been
successful in Canada and around the world. Outreach programs, needle
exchanges and Vancouver‚s supervised injection site are reducing the
spread of HIV/AIDS and increasing the number of people accessing
treatment. So why is the Conservative Government dropping harm reduction
from Canada‚s Drug Strategy?

The federal government has removed harm reduction from its 2007 budget,
taking a page directly from the US War on Drugs that has cost the public
billions of dollars and has only seen drug use rise.

Please join Parkdale-High Park MP Peggy Nash, with guests MPP Cheri DiNovo
and NDP MP Libby Davies, the federal NDP Spokesperson for Drug Policy,
along with a panel of leading experts in harm reduction and drug use, for
a public forum on harm reduction, public health and an integrated strategy
for drug use.

WHEN:       THURSDAY, JULY 26, 2007
                  7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

WHAT:       PUBLIC FORUM ON CANADA‚S DRUG POLICY

WHERE: PARKDALE COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTRE
                  1229 Queen Street West

WHO:         MP Peggy Nash and guests MPP Cheri DiNovo and NDP MP Libby
Davies,
along with local leading experts and advocates.

Let‚s talk about harm reduction
What is it?
FACT VS OPINION.
What‚s working and what isn‚t?

„If Canada wants to fulfill its mission of reducing the most severe harms
associated with illicit drug use, steps must now be taken to implement a
truly evidence-based national drug strategy rather than shoveling millions
of dollars towards these failed (enforcement) programs.‰ -  Dr. Thomas
Kerr, BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS.
