Tomorrow Today: How Canada Can Make a World of Difference

Eleven of Canada's largest environmental groups released a roadmap to
action that outlines how Canada can make environmental sustainability a
cornerstone of a healthy and prosperous society. The report, entitled
<http://www.tomorrowtodaycanada.ca/index.php>Tomorrow Today: How Canada
Can Make a World of Difference, offers practical directions to address
today's top environmental issues.

In a recent Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)
study that examined 25 key environmental indicators, Canada ranked 28th
out of 29 developed nations. During the international climate change
negotiations in Bali, Indonesia in December 2007, Canada and the United
States jointly received the “Colossal Fossil” award as the countries that
garnered the largest number of “fossil of the day” awards – awards
presented to the countries that did the most to block progress at the
talks.

Clearly, Canada needs to urgently address its failing efforts to protect
its massive -- and massively important -- piece of the planet.

This document sets out a roadmap for restoring a sense of purpose and
direction to our environmental protection efforts. It reflects the best
thinking of the people who have made it their job to understand how we can
live in greater harmony with the Earth.

Remember when our own government doused all the protesters of the FTAA in
Quebec, 2001 with nerve gas and other toxic chemicals banned by the Geneva
Convention? Well, seems those same chemicals are being blamed for Gulf War
Syndrome. Surprise. Many of us suffered mental health (and other) break
downs following those FTAA protests, including Tooker.

Brain-Tweaking Chemical Caused Gulf War Syndrome, Says Study
By Brandon Keim March 10, 2008

The controversial disorder known as Gulf War illness may have been caused
by chemicals used in pesticides and anti-nerve gas pills.

In an article published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy
of Sciences, University of California, San Diego military health
researcher Beatrice Golomb reviewed 115 studies on Gulf War illness, also
known as GWI.

Approximately one in three veterans of the Persian Gulf War have reported
lingering health problems associated with GWI, from neuropathic pain and
loss of muscle control to chronic fatigue and forgetfulness. <snip>

Taken together, the evidence -- epidemiological, animal, biological -- is
persuasive enough for Golomb to formally declare a cause-and-effect
relationship. This isn't just important for veterans of the Gulf War, she
wrote; it could also explain the as-yet-undiagnosed afflictions of
civilians exposed to AChEIs.

Gulf War syndrome's chemical-origin theory upheld
A class of compounds found in nerve gas and pesticides remains the likely
cause, a review of studies concludes.

Catch this excellent video on Youtube called:
Nutrition for ADHD -- Is your child's brain starving?

It's a lecture given by a Doctor Michael Lyon from Mount Royal College,
Calgary, who has spent the last 14 years researching nutrition for the
brain. Brilliant and comprehensive presentation.

DON'T BURN FOOD: BIOFUELS STANDARDS NOW!

Increased demand for biofuels is driving up food prices and accelerating
climate change, as rainforests are destroyed to grow fuel. But with strong
global sustainability standards, we can ensure that biofuels help, rather
than hurt.

We should feed people, not cars--so join the call for global standards to
clean up the biofuels industry.

Nominees for this year's top prize include the CEOs of General Motors,
Bank of America, ExxonMobil and Dynegy, as well as the premier of Alberta,
Canada - Ed Stelmach.

Organized by the Energy Action Coalition, Co-op America and Rainforest
Action Network, the "Foolies" recognize the world's biggest contributors
to our devastating global addiction to fossil fuels. The awards feature
five different categories: Fossil Fool of the Year, Outstanding
Performance in Corporate Greenwashing, Most Inauspicious Newcomer,
Lifetime Achievement and Biggest Human Toll.

Nominees for Fossil Fool of the Year, to be given to the individual who
has made the most significant contribution over the past year to the
development and dissemination of fossil fuel-related pollution, include:

- Rick Wagoner, CEO of General Motors, for keeping America addicted to oil
by mass producing vehicles more inefficient than the Model T, and for
suing the state of California for attempting to reduce vehicle greenhouse
gas emissions;
- Ken Lewis, CEO of Bank of America, for the bank's massive financial
support of the coal power and mountaintop removal coal mining industries;
- Rex Tillerson, CEO of ExxonMobil, for neglecting to use his company's
record-breaking profits to develop cleaner, more secure energy
alternatives;
- Ed Stelmach, Premier of Alberta, Canada, for promoting oil extraction
from Canada's infamous Alberta tar sands, a project which has the
potential to lay waste to an area the size of the state of Florida; and
- Bruce A. Williamson, CEO of Dynegy Corporation, for proposing to build
more coal-fired power plants than any other power company in the United
States.

Voters also have the chance to decide which individual has most
effectively fooled the public into believing his or her company is
benefiting the environment (Greenwashing); which individual represents a
company or organization that has burst into the public consciousness in
the past year as a major contributor to climate change (Newcomer); the
individual who has done the most over the course of a career to further
global warming (Lifetime Achievement); and the person who most negatively
impacted human lives in the name of fossil fuel development in 2007
(Biggest Human Toll).
