Rainforest Action Network is starting a local activist campaign
against RBC.
Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) is investing your money to finance the tar
sands. Climate change is the biggest threat to the planet and the tar
sands are the world's dirtiest oil. RBC is Canada's Number 1 fossil
fuel financier. They are playing a key role in the massive expansion
of tar sands oil production. Projects they finance are destroying
First Nations communities and will contribute to a doubling of Global
Warming emissions from the tar sands in the next few years.
We need your creativity and energy to bring the message to RBC
executives, shareholders and customers that they are bankrupting our
future by financing tar sands expansion.
We will dress up as "Tarbie" the RBC mascot. We will hand out
campaign info to customers. We will decorate RBC bank machines. We

Politics of a North American Climate-Change Cap-and-Trade System

The Stephen Harper government has invited the US to join Canada in a new
climate-change treaty which would result in “one shared commitment
from the
Canada and the U.S. akin to the collective commitment of the European
Union.” (Environment Minister Jim Prentice, Jan. 20, 2009).
Faculty and students are invited to a seminar discussion of this
initiative,
to address questions such as:
. how is this initiative being received in Washington?
. how would such a system work?
. what are the implications for Canadian climate-change policy?
. why is the Harper government doing this?
The seminar will begin with a short presentation, followed by open
discussion.
Refreshments will be served.
Presented by the U. of T. Environmental Policy Discussion Group.

Please join us for an evening of discussion and food. Come hear
directly
from a diverse panel of community organizers about their experiences and
strategies, including Max Rameau, an organizer with the Miami-based
‘Take
Back the Land’, a grassroots group that, as a result of the crises of
gentrification, housing and now foreclosures, has been liberating public
and foreclosed land and homes since 2006.
The current crisis of capitalism has long been forming, but it is much
broader than the current credit crunch, plunging stock and housing
markets. This crisis is about our ability to buy food, to afford
housing
and transit, find work, and access welfare and disability support money.
And yet, in this country, as in many parts of the world, billions of
dollars are earmarked for corporate bailouts, while people face a crisis
of survival. So-called ‘stimulus packages’ do not address the
perpetual
roll-back in our social gains - public education, affordable housing,
health care, collective bargaining, a living wage, safe work
conditions, a
non-toxic, sustainable environment. In the City of Toronto, spending
on social
housing is dropping annually, subsidized daycare spots are set to be
slashed,
basic social services cut, and a majority of us do not and will not
qualify for
EI. Women and migrant workers’ needs are not even on the table.
But we didn't break the system – one that never worked for us in the
first
place. We should not be forced to pay for it.
Only through bitter struggle have we won any measure of justice and
dignity for our communities. The current financial crisis is and will
continue to hit poor, marginalized, working, and racialized
communities first and
hardest. Make no mistake – the rich are scrambling to save themselves.
Please join us to discuss an inspiring history and present examples of
resistance, and ways we can come together to fight for what is ours, for
what our families and neighbourhoods really deserve.

New Report Shows BIke Lanes on Bloor are Good for Business!
The Clean Air Partnership is pleased to announce the publication of a
research report titled Bike Lanes, On-Street Parking and Business.
Contrary to common public perception, the evidence shows that
removing on-street parking to install a bicycle lane or widened
sidewalk would likely increase not decrease commercial activity.
"This report should alleviate concerns that downtown business owners
have about on-street bicycle lanes", said Eva Ligeti, Executive
Director of the Clean Air Partnership.
The study – conducted in July of 2008 – surveyed the opinions and
preferences of merchants and patrons on Bloor Street and analyzed
parking usage data in the Annex area. Among the study’s findings:
• Only 10% of patrons drive to the Bloor Annex neighbourhood;
• Even during peak periods no more than about 80% of parking
spaces are paid for;
• Patrons arriving by foot and bicycle visit the most often and
spend the most money per month;
• There are more merchants who believe that a bike lane or
widened sidewalk would increase business than merchants who think
those changes would reduce business;
• Patrons would prefer a bike lane to widened sidewalks at a
ratio of almost four to one; and
• The reduction in on-street parking supply from a bike lane or
widened sidewalk could be accommodated in the area’s off-street
municipal parking lots.
Background: To encourage more Canadians to use bicycles for
utilitarian trips more often, it is essential that the implementation
of bike lanes on major streets be accelerated. The Bloor-Danforth
corridor is a particularly attractive option for a city-wide east-
west bike lane in Toronto because it is one of the only long,
straight, relatively flat routes that connects the city from end to
end; there are no streetcar tracks; and has one of the highest car-
bike collision rates in the city. However, the installation of bike
lanes in this corridor has historically been thought to be too
politically difficult to achieve.
