Living on Earth as if we want to stay

Two public discussions:

Tues.April 14 - 12:30 pm
Fri. April 17 - 7:00 pm
215 Spadina Ave. at College, 4th floor

Hosted by:
the Centre for Social Innovation and
Womens' Healthy Environments Network - WHEN

If personal security is threatened by an economic crisis with
undertones of the climate and energy issues, what does it all mean
for the children and grandchildren?

While humans are a gifted creature, finding our way out of the
present situation requires that we acknowledge how the world has
changed.

For forty years, Mike Nickerson has been studying the problems and
solutions of our times. His study, from outside of institutional
molds, reveals how societies change. Nickerson will be the guest of
CSI and WHEN at 215 Spadina Ave. where he will facilitate a
discussion based on his book "Life, Money & Illusion; Living on Earth
as if we want to stay."

In his book, Nickerson explores the implications of attempting
perpetual growth on our finite planet. He also outlines ways in which
we can adapt to what he calls the maturation of the human species.
"There is a time for growing and there is a time for mature
responsibility," he says. "The human family is at the threshold of a
new era and we are feeling adolescent angst as we pine for the
carefree growth of childhood."

In the same ways that life doesn't end with individual maturity,
there are vast opportunities awaiting a post-growth society. To come
of age as a society, however, we have to deal with the "growth
hormone" that makes the economy ill when it is not expanding. The
first step is to choose between the goal of long-term well-being and
that of perpetual expansion. It is a Question of Direction.

Come, join us for a presentation and discussion about how we could
recreate mutual provision (the economy) in a way that can provide for
countless generations to come.

There will be a CKLN Membership meeting
to update on the current legal actions which are in progress and to
decide on strategies to solve the crisis.

Tuesday April 14th 2009 from 6-8pm
519 Church St, Room 322

CKLN 88.1 is a campus/community radio station broadcasting from
Ryerson University and in operation since 1983. For 25 years this
alternative media outlet has served as a key point for dissemination
of independent and grassroots news, views, music and culture. It has
provided a rare voice for marginalized communities in Canada and
internationally.

It is now over a year that CKLN has been without a functioning Board
of Directors or proper management. In February of 2008, due to
oppressive behaviour of the Board and management at that time, which
saw the beginning of unjust dismissals of volunteer programmers and
technical staff, a Special Membership Meeting was held which elected
the non-student members of a new board. That legitimate new board was
never allowed to take over management of the station. The situation
in the station deteriorated to the point where CKLN is now virtually
dead after a year-long, bitter struggle by members and supporters
against a corporate takeover which ran the station into the ground.
Currently the station is sporadically broadcasting recorded programs
or dead air. Only two people are authorized to enter to put old
recorded material on the airwaves.

Within the past year organizational and structural changes have been
initiated which have been non-inclusive, non-transparent and in
violation of the governing by-laws and of the mandate of CKLN to
provide “a forum for historical contextualization and development of
musical, artistic and other cultural expressions, along with socially
progressive ideas which arise from communities…which are politically
and economically disadvantaged and whose access to public
communications and media is thereby limited.”
Within the last year 67 staff and volunteers have been forced out of
the station. Some programmers and volunteers had more than a decade
of service at CKLN.

This is a crucial turning point in the fight to save CKLN so that we
do not lose forever one of the unique voices for social justice in
Canada.

All concerned members (staff, volunteer, community, student) and
supporters welcome.

DEMANDING ACCESSIBLE EDUCATION & AN END TO THE CRIMINALIZATION OF
DISSENT
Rally Thur. April 16th

As many students are struggling just to survive and afford their
education, the University of Toronto and other universities across
Ontario are plotting to raise tuition fees. The U of T Governing
Council seeks to pass a motion at their next meeting on Thursday,
April 16 for further increases of almost 5%. This fee hike will
amount to close to $39 million in revenue coming directly from
students’ pockets! In addition, last week the Faculty of Arts and
Science voted for flat fees, which will force students taking 3 or
more courses to pay as much as those taking a FULL COURSE LOAD.
Education is a right and should be free and accessible to all.

The U of T administration has shown that their interests lie in
turning a profit off the backs of students, while criminalizing those
who take a stand against tuition increases. A year later, bogus
charges are STILL being pursued against four community members for
allegedly participating in a peaceful sit-in against fee increases on
March 20, 2008. However, community support continues to grow. Over
100 professors have signed a letter calling to drop the charges and
the student code of conduct investigations against the Fight Fees14,
and thousands have signed the online petition.

The message is clear; students will not be deterred from exercising
their Charter Rights and right to academic freedom. We will join
together to take a collective stand against this systemic assault on
equity and access on campus and gather outside the upcoming Governing
Council meeting.

Join us in sending a message to President David Naylor to STOP
CHARGING STUDENTS!

WHAT: Rally Demanding Accessible Education and an End to Charges

WHEN: Thursday, April 16 at 4 pm

WHERE: Simcoe Hall, 27 Kings College Circle, University of Toronto

BRING: Pots, pans and anything loud; banners; and all your friends

Tar Sands Showdown: Tony Clarke
Canada and the New Politics of Oil in an Age of Climate Change:
Reclaiming the Catholic Social Gospel

Sunday April 19, 2008 @ 2:00PM
Location: The Paulist Cenre for Catholic Evangelization
830 Bathurst St. (just north of Bloor, opposite Bathurst Subway station)
$8.00

Canada's oil patch is booming. The Alberta tar sands have become the
next big oil source for the United States, replacing Saudi Arabia.
Within the next 15 years, Canada will be pumping four times more
crude than today from the tar pits of northern Alberta into the US
market. The tar sands are key to the claim that Canada is the new
"energy superpower."

As the new backbone of Canada's economy, the tar sands are bound to
define and shape Canada's role and destiny as a nation in the 21st
century. What is lacking is independent, reliable information and
thoughtful analysis on the host of questions raised by the tar sands.
What is the real cost to Albertans and to Canadians? How far are we
willing to go to fuel America's oil addiction? What will the
ecological and social impacts be? What can be done to build an
alternative energy future in an age of global warming?

Tar Sands Showdown provides a tool for stimulating public discussion
and debate about these important issues.

TONY CLARKE is the founder and director of the Polaris Institute in
Ottawa, an organization dedicated to developing tools and strategies
for civic action on major public policy issues, including energy
security, water rights, and free trade. He holds a doctorate from the
University of Chicago, has written numerous books, and is the
recipient of Sweden's Right Livelihood Award, the "alternative Nobel
Prize." Among his most recent books is Blue Gold: The Fight to Stop
the Corporate Theft of the World's Water with Maude Barlow. For
almost 20 years, Tony was the Director of the Social Affairs
Department of the Canadian Catholic Conference of Bishops until 1994.

at Convocation Hall, University of Toronto

Thursday, April 23rd from 6:30-8:30 pm.
