Mayor Miller is trying to capture the positive energy that occurs at
the start of Bike Month and channel it to encourage council to pass
the Bike Lanes on Jarvis. To do this Mayor Miller has asked the
Jarvis Street Bike Lanes be the FIRST item of regular business on the
agenda to be dealt with Monday morning.

The free breakfast in Nathan Phillips ends at 9:30 just when the City
Council begins its meeting. We have an excellent opportunity to fill
City Hall with cyclists and bring the positive energy that cyclists
have into the council chambers, and hopefully encourage some
additional votes to go our way. As I'm sure you hers/read in the news
today, the vote at council is expected to be just as close as it was
for making TTC an "essential service."

What's worse? The sun, or the toxins in the sunscreens? It's not an
either/or situation. Regular exposure to the sun lets your skin adapt
to defend itself against harmful rays, all the while making vitamin
D. So tanning is a healthy response, and those who get regular
exposure to the sun lower their skin cancer risk. Burning is
absolutely not healthy – it clearly increases your risk of deadly
skin cancer.

So what to do? You'll learn everything you need to know to stay safe
and select safe products for you and your loved ones. We'll make a
safe, all natural sun protection lotion, and you'll go home with 175
ml in a beautiful re-usable metal pump bottle.

problems. We will learn from and work with experienced trainers,
issue experts, social movement veterans, and indigenous leaders.

We believe that we will build a more just, anti-oppressive, and
sustainable society if we: increase the number of young people who
are involved in grassroots organizing and movement building; work in
solidarity with indigenous communities whose values we share on the
issues of self-determination and ecological justice. Our month long

FIERCE LIGHT -- IN TORONTO THEATRES

till June 1
Cumberland Theatre, Yorkville (159 Cumberland Street)
www.fiercelight.org, fiercelightfilms at mac.com

Official Hot Docs selection Fierce Light continues the quest for a
fusion between spirituality and activism previously explored in
Velcrow Ripper's award-winning feature documentary, ScaredSacred
(Special Jury Prize, Toronto International Film Festival; Genie
Award, Best Documentary).

The 2006 murder of friend and fellow media-activist Brad Will in
protest-torn Oaxaca, Mexico, is the impetus for Ripper's journey,
which takes him to the flash points of spiritual activism around the
world, including Montgomery Alabama; Robben Island, South Africa;
Andrah, India; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; and South Central Los
Angeles, where a months-long protest against razing of a vital
community garden provides a highly dramatic spine for the wide-
ranging film.

En route, Ripper encounters a number of eloquent icons, including
American Civil Rights legend, Congressman John Lewis; actor turned
activist, Daryl Hannah; Nobel prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu;
Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker; Buddhist peace activist
monk Thich Nhat Hahn; famed tree-sitter Julia Butterfly Hill; and
dharma punk Noah Levine.

War of the wheels looms with cross-city bike lane plan
Globe and Mail
In a move certain to be seized on by critics who claim the city is
waging a war on cars, a study of an Etobicoke-to-Scarborough bike
lane right across Bloor Street and Danforth Avenue will soon be
unveiled by Toronto officials.

The feasibility study contemplates a city-spanning bicycle lane from
Victoria Park Avenue to Kipling Avenue, passing through Greektown,
the Annex and Bloor West Village, among other neighbourhoods.

The idea - long demanded by cycling activists who say the city lacks
safe east-west bicycle routes - is expected to face a fight from
drivers and business owners.

The report is still being finalized but is expected to come before
the city's works committee on June 3.

It will outline the options for fitting a cross-city bicycle lane
onto Bloor Street and Danforth Avenue, such as the elimination of on-
street parking or keeping parking but reducing rush-hour traffic to
one lane in each direction, said Daniel Egan, the city's manager of
pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.
