VIGIL TO STOP DEPORTATION OF IRAQ WAR RESISTER RODNEY WATSON

PROTEST AND VIGIL
FRIDAY AUGUST 7, 4:30 P.M.
NW corner of University Avenue & Queen Street West
Toronto

A U.S. Iraq War veteran and war resister who has been living in
Vancouver since 2007 has been told to leave Canada by August 10 or
face removal.

On Friday, August 7, 4:30 p.m., Toronto-area supporters of war
resisters will gather in protest on the northwest corner of
University Avenue and Queen Street West.

Rodney Watson is a veteran of the Iraq War. After seeing the way
Iraqi civilians were being treated by the US, he refused a second
deployment, choosing to come to Canada instead. Watson now has a
Canadian-born son, and seeks only to live in peace in his new home.

In June 2009, the Immigration Critics from all three opposition
parties wrote to Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Jason
Kenney, calling on him to honour the will of Parliament and “not to
use the Parliamentary recess to disregard the expressed will of the
House of Commons with respect to the fair treatment of Iraq War
resisters in Canada”. A majority of Members of Parliament voted twice
to allow U.S. war resisters to remain in Canada, first in June 2008,
then again in March 2009.

Despite this very clear mandate, Minister Kenney and the Harper
Government continue to deport Iraq War resisters. Several war
resisters already have been deported to the U.S., where two have been
court martialed and imprisoned. In addition to Watson, several other
war resisters in Canada live under threat of deportation, including
Kimberly Rivera, Jeremy Hinzman and Patrick Hart. All are parents of
young children.

In January, Minister Kenney publicly denounced U.S. war resisters as
“bogus refugee claimants,” revealing the government’s blanket
opposition to what is supposed to be an impartial process. The
Minister’s blatantly prejudicial comments were promptly denounced by
Amnesty International Canada and the Canadian Council for Refugees.

On Friday August 7, 4:30 P.M. EST, Watson’s supporters will gather on
the corner of University Avenue and Queen Street West, calling on the
government to stop the deportations and allow U.S. war resisters to
remain in Canada.

ArtMap

You have been invited to participate in a pan-Toronto arts project!
Confirmed artists and arts organizations will each be given a
blank wooden piece of a map of Toronto that will correspond to the
ward where they live, work or were born. They will then be
free to rework this however they see fit (i.e. carving, painting,
photo transfer, collage etc.) Once completed the works will be
re-assembled and displayed as part of Manifesto 2009 at City Hall and
then presented to each respective City councillor as an
expression of the importance, unity and vibrancy of arts across Toronto.

Women's Lives focus of "the crush of beauty"
at SummerWorks, Aug. 6-16

Fresh from the critical and audience favourite of the Toronto Fringe,
George Bernard Shaw's "Candida," (“ five stars“ - eye weekly;
“without question, one of the hits at this year's Fringe” -
torontoist.com), Burning Passions Theatre stages a new work, "the
crush of beauty," at the SummerWorks Theatre Festival, running August
6-16 at St. Andrew’s Playground (Adelaide St. W., at Brant St., just
west of Spadina). Shows run Tues.-Fri. at 7 pm, Sat. & Sun. at 3 pm.
Chairs will be provided.

Written and directed by Laurel Smith, co-produced by Matthew Behrens,
starring Elva Mai Hoover and Tiffany Martin, stage managed by Natalie
Gisele, with technical direction and sound design by Hilary Unger,
"the crush of beauty" explores the unlikely friendship between an
older woman and a teenage girl who are surprised to discover how much
they have in common. The play explores the ways in which women are
still trying to understand and express their frustration at a world
that places very real constraints on their freedom and their lives.

Hoover, a National Theatre School graduate with thirty years of
experience on the stage (including Stratford and regional theatres
across Canada), in film, television, and commercials, has received
four Gemini and Genie nominations, and is often seen on the small
screen as Elvira Lawson on Road to Avonlea, Mrs. Edison on The
Edison Twins, and Ted’s Mom on Queer as Folk. Martin, a Humber
Theatre Performance graduate, was nominated for a Dora Award in 2008
(Ensemble Cast) for an outstanding group performance in Factory
Theatre’s Production of "Tough!". Most recently she appeared in
Obsidian Theatre’s critically acclaimed production of "Black Medea."
