Climate Crisis? Fire the Scientists Stephen Harper

How to deal with the climate crisis? Canada’s Conservative government  
has the answer. Fire the scientists. No more funds. No access to  
government labs. The Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric  
Sciences (CFCAS) is being cut off.

In this and many other politically-loaded decisions they are trying  
to build rightwing support for a fall election. Harper’s decision to  
kill CFCAS plays to climate deniers and advocates of business-as-usual.

"Canada will lose the capacity to understand its own environment…  
[and] will depend on third parties” at a time when a major drought is  
hitting the Prairies, wildfires ravage BC, and Arctic ice is  
disappearing."

  CLIMATE ACTION CAMP
   It's Time to Defend the Planet

     August 28th – 30th (Friday-Sunday)
     Edmonton, Alberta
     Register Today!!!

     Everyday, people feel the worsening effects of climate change as  
the world’s temperature continues to rise. Our leaders have done  
little to nothing, leaving the planet undefended against the  
worsening effects of climate change.

     From August 28th - 30th, Greenpeace is offering a 3-day series  
of workshops to equip your climate activist toolbox so that YOU can  
take action and defend your planet!

     A camp near Edmonton, Alberta will provide informational  
sessions on the tar sands and climate change, and workshops on non- 
violent direct action, environmental justice, media, art and  
activism, campaign planning and more.

     There is something for everyone and the camp is a great way for  
the new and experienced activists to learn new skills, hone  
techniques and share experiences with like-minded people.

     Suggested donation for the weekend is $20 but no one will be  
turned away due to lack of funds. Rides will also be available from  
Edmonton.

Land Occupation to Oppose Sprawl in Guelph, ON

For 2 weeks now there has been an occupation in Guelph, Ontario at  
the proposed Hanlon Creek Business Park, at one of the last Old  
Growth Forests in Southern Ontario.

On Monday, July 27th, at 6:30 am, about 60 people walked in and  
stopped the destruction of this beautiful and precious ecosystem.  
Since that time, we have maintained a peaceful presence and have  
created a wonderful and caring community, ranging from 30 – 70  
people, with up to 150 people visiting us at special events, such as  
a family fun day that occurred on Saturday, August 1st.

They are going to court on Monday, August 10th, to fight the City’s  
attempt to silence them with an injunction and legal fees.

Good news for the Boreal Forest!

Greenpeace announced this week that it would be ending its nearly 5- 
year long international Kleercut campaign with the release of a new  
environmental policy by Kimberly-Clark, the world’s largest  
manufacturer of tissue products.

The company has set a goal of obtaining 100 percent of its wood fiber  
for tissue products from environmentally responsible sources. Read more

Funding for Anti-idling projects

Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan’s) ecoENERGY for Personal Vehicles  
program is launching Round 3 of its funding process. Deadline:  
October 15, 2009.

Details about proposal submissions and evaluation criteria are  
available on the Web at www.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca.

Examples of possible projects include:

§         building on NRCan’s national campaign to encourage  
Canadians to reduce idling (www.idling.gc.ca);

§         encouraging school boards to develop and implement a “no  
idling” policy with an accompanying awareness and outreach campaign.
