VIGIL FOR U.S. WAR RESISTER DEAN WALCOTT AT FEDERAL COURT

Wednesday, August 19, 2009
8:00am
Federal Court Building
180 Queen St. West
(west of University Ave, Osgoode subway)
Toronto

Canadians have spoken out overwhelmingly in support of Iraq war
resisters being allowed to stay in Canada. These young men and women
made a difficult decision to not participate in the illegal and
immoral war in Iraq. They have shown tremendous courage, leaving
behind their homes, their family, friends and careers.

Yet Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Minister of Immigration Jason
Kenney, who both wanted Canada to participate in the Iraq War,
continue to deport Iraq war resisters. War resisters Robin Long and
Cliff Cornell were sentenced to long prison terms in U.S. military
prisons because the Harper government refused to respect two House of
Commons motions (passed June 3, 2008 and March 30, 2009) to stop
deporting war resisters and to let them stay. Jeremy Hinzman,
Kimberly Rivera, Rodney Watson and Dean Walcott are currently
threatened with deportation from Canada.

On August 19th, the Federal Court will hear an appeal by Iraq war
resister Dean Walcott. Dean, a former U.S. Marine who served two
tours of duty in Iraq, is appealing the negative decisions on his Pre-
Removal Risk Assessment and his request to be allowed to stay in
Canada on Humanitarian and Compassionate grounds.

Join a vigil to support Dean Walcott and to demand that the Harper
government respect Canadian democracy and the will of the Canadian
people. It is time to let the war resisters stay!

The Mining Awareness Coalition Toronto is seeking volunteers to help
canvass key riding's in Toronto to raise awareness about Canada's
role in the mining industry, as well as to support an important piece
of legislation, Bill C-300.

Canada's international reputation as a leader in human and
environmental rights has been seriously damaged by repeated human and
environmental abuses
perpetuated by Canadian extractive industries abroad. Bill C-300
looks to hold these companies accountable for their actions.

PATIENT BUILT WALL TOUR

MONDAY, AUGUST 24 AND WEDNESDAY AUGUST 26, 5-7:00 PM:

You and anyone you wish to bring along are welcome to attend a
historical tour of the 19th century patient built asylum boundary
walls located at the present-day Centre for Addiction and Mental
Health (CAMH), 1001 Queen Street West, Toronto.

The purpose of this tour is to remember the contributions of the
women and men who lived, worked, and died in the Toronto Insane
Asylum, as is represented by the boundary walls that they built which
stand as an enduring testament to their abilities, and to use the
past to challenge discrimination experienced today by people who have
a psychiatric history.

This tour is wheelchair accessible.

PLACE: CAMH is located at 1001 Queen Street West which is at the
intersection of Queen and Ossington.

MEET: Meet at 5 PM just outside the FRONT DOORS of CAMH, 1001 Queen
Street West, which faces onto the corner of Queen and Ossington. If
you arrive late and the tour has already started, go along the length
of the wall (east-south-west) and look for the tour as it proceeds
along the boundary wall.

TRANSPORTATION: Take the Queen Street streetcar WEST from the OSGOODE
Subway Station to the corner of Queen and Ossington (or east if
coming from the opposite direction along Queen Street).

The OSSINGTON 63 bus can also be taken SOUTH from the Ossington
station to Queen Street, right across the street from CAMH.

Pay parking is also available in the parking lot which exits onto
Shaw Street and on surrounding streets.

The wall tour is open to everyone interested so please bring along
anybody you would like to invite.

Please note: since the tour is on the grounds of a mental health
facility, in order to respect people's privacy, we will not be going
into the buildings.

The wall tour is entirely outside so please dress appropriately.

You can also read more about the history of the patient built wall on
the Psychiatric Survivor Archives web site:

Climate Action NOW and Michael Ignatieff

"Climate Action NOW" is the most critical issue. Inaction to
implement strong policies (pricing carbon, ie pollution) will have
an irreversible, negative impact on the Economy, Health, Food and
Water, Insurance, .

A flyer has been prepared and is being distributed in Michael
Ignatieff's riding (Etobicoke/Lakeshore). The door-knocking has
been a great success as people have participated in signing the
Kyoto Plus petition

http://www.kyotoplus.ca/en/index.html

There has been agreement to write, e-mail or phone Mr. Ignatieff and
tell him their concerns about Climate Change and.....

· to sign the KyotoPlus Pledge for Canadian Politicians and
support effective measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to at
least 25% below 1990 levels by 2020 http://www.greenpeace.org/canada/
