Greenspiration News

To be truly radical is to make hope possible, not despair convincing.
- Raymond Williams

While I agree with all the recommendations I see being advertised to
avoid the H1N1 virus, I am a bit surprised that no one has mentioned
one of the most important steps of all and that is to improve your
diet and get some exercise to boost your immune system. Increasing
your intake of whole foods such as vegetables, avoiding refined and
processed foods (ie. high in sugar and flour) as much as possible,
and taking some extra vitamins will go a long way to protecting you
from any form of flu.

Pedal Power

Thursday September 24, 2009 at 8 pm on CBC-TV

Repeating: Friday September 25, 2009 at 10 pm ET/PT on CBC Newsworld

In Canada, bicycles "don't get no respect." From the story of Igor,
and the anatomy of the underground world of bike peddlers in Toronto,
this film spins out to how other cities are making riding safe. Using
innovative "bike-cam" techniques to convey, up-close, the sensation
of bike riding, a series of character-driven mini-narratives propel
the film through a study of what makes a city "bikeable". Whether
it's the public bike program in Paris, bike mega-garages in
Amsterdam, bike paths in Vancouver and Montreal, or the surprising
leadership of New York City, we follow the story of this remarkable
little conveyance as it wheels though the first decade of the 21st
century.

Using Cell Phones while driving banned in Ontario

The Legislative Assembly of Ontario carried Bill 118, an amendment to
the Highway Traffic Act now bans drivers from using handheld devices
with display screens while operating a vehicle on the road. The bill
has undergone several revisions during its consideration, but the new
rules of the road will be as follows:

- Holding or using a wireless communication device (a cell phone) or
a portable electronic entertainment device (iPod) while driving is
prohibited.

- Commercial GPS units along with similar dashboard-mounted devices
that provide gauges and displays relating to logistical or navigation
uses are fine.

- Using a cell phone or wireless communication device in hands-free
mode, as long as you're not holding it during use, is fine.

- Using any device while pulled-over or parked in a way that you are
not disrupting traffic, is fine.

- The systems used by Ambulances, Fire Departments, and Law
Enforcement are exempt.

The ban is in effect as of today, September 1 2009 and will carry a
fine of $500. Demerit points will not be included, but depending upon
the violation, police will have the option to also use existing
careless driving laws for additional penalties.

Climate of fear grips gas country

Farmers remain on edge 11 months into enCana bombings in northeastern
B.C.

The farmer is too nervous to have his name published, for fear of
becoming the target of RCMP interrogations, harassment and phone
tapping. This is what happens to anyone who openly criticizes the
oilpatch in the area, he says, a view echoed by others in the area.

Stephen Harper: Unfit to govern

Anticipating another federal election feels like being in the movie
Groundhog Day with the same players (save one) going through the same
routines, everyone stuck in the same place, doing the same thing. <snip>

Despite all that, we need to take the opportunity of an election the
Liberals have decided they have to force to save face, to get rid of
the most destructive and mean-spirited prime minister the country has
ever had. There is no good reason to wait as next spring or fall will
simply see a longer list of victims of Stephen Harper's disdain for
Canada and the whole notion of democratic government.

Quite simply, Stephen Harper is unfit to govern. Surely the only
prime minister in Canadian history who has actually expressed
contempt for his own country, Harper has demonstrated a disregard for
the rule of law that should, in a rational world, disqualify him from
leading any government.

Statement on eco-justice and ecological debt

The Central Committee of the World Council of Churches at its recent
meeting in Geneva unanimously adopted a Statement on Eco-justice and
Ecological Debt with a particular focus on climate change and
climate debt; calling on churches to urge Northern governments,
institutions and corporations to drastically reduce emissions and
adopt a fair and binding deal, brnging emissions down to less than
350 ppm, based on climate justice principles, which include support
to vulnerable communities, and paying for mitigation and adaptation
based on tools such as the Greenhouse Development Rights (GDR)
Framework. The full text of the Statement can be found at:

Going Green and Off Oil and Nuclear is Highly Profitable - Video
Renewable Energy and Sustainability are “more profitable” than
nuclear and fossil fuels and reduce the risk of Climate Change

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4569577556800822039#

“We could be completely off oil at about 1/5th the cost of buying it,
could get 1 million new jobs and save 1 million old jobs, could get
rid of ¼ the carbon dioxide emissions that cause global wierding and
would make a very handsome return, which is why that transition
beyond oil can be led by business for profit. We could also have
largely or wholy phased out emissions that are changing the climate
because it is cheaper to save oil than to buy oil.”
Amory Lovins, CEO and Founder of the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI)

The Institute fosters the efficient and restorative use of resources
so companies, governments and organizations are more efficient, make
more money, and do less harm to the environment.

Hansen's summary of Harper's climate crimes
by James Hansen

Canadians are a compassionate people, concerned about the environment
and the role their government plays on the international stage. And
yet, there are few countries I can think of that have done more to
undermine international efforts to fight climate change in recent
years, than Canada. The evidence is easy to find:

civil disobedience can make Canada a climate leader.

Climate Action Camps will be held:

1. Toronto, Ontario: October 2-4
2. Montreal, Quebec: October 16-18
3. Halifax, Nova Scotia: October 30-November1
4. Vancouver, British Columbia: November 6-8

All camps are on weekends - Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday. We
encourage participants to car pool to the camps & organizers will
help link up participants for this purpose. Depending on

Background - In December 2009, the fate of the earth will be decided
at the United Nations climate change conference in Copenhagen. We
must demand leadership from our government to make Canada part of the
solution, rather than part of the problem.

At the Climate Action Camps, experienced trainers will give workshops
on climate change, peaceful civil disobedience, environmental
justice, art and activism, action planning, and getting the message
out to the media.

Suggested donation for the weekend is $20 - $50 (including meals) but
no one will be turned away due to lack of funds.
