Say Bye to Buy Local
How secret trade deals threaten our local economies, jobs and the
environment and weaken your community

Tuesday, October 20 from 7 pm to 9 pm
Victoria College Chapel Building, 91 Charles Street West, Room 213

These free trade deals will stop your local government from choosing
to spend your tax dollars in your community. The lowest bidder wins
regardless of the impact on local economies. The federal and
provincial governments are selling Canadians the idea that provincial
purchasing policies and other rights are barriers to free trade.
What's really behind the push for 'inter-provincial trade' deals, the
Canada-European Union pact and a new NAFTA accord?

Guest Speakers: Sid Ryan (CUPE) and Maude Barlow (Council of Canadians)

The Toronto Cyclists Union, in partnership with the Toronto Coalition
for Active Transportation, The Clean Air Partnership, and the US
Consulate General in Toronto, is happy to present:

Livable Streets: Rethinking Urban Transportation
An evening of discussion with Roger Geller – Bicycle Coordinator,
Portland, Oregon.

Wednesday, October 21, 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

at the Centre for Social Innovation, 215 Spadina Avenue, Suite 120

Roger Geller has been with the Office of Transportation in Portland,
Oregon since July, 1994. Roger is the Bicycle Coordinator in the
Office of the Director Planning Division. He currently works on
Bikeway Network Signing, Technical design for bikeways, Bicycle
parking, and an update to the Bicycle Master Plan.

Roger will overview what Portland has done over the past two decades
to improve bicycling, what successes have been achieved, and how
those successes are measured. He will talk about the four types of
cyclists: "Strong & Fearless", "Enthused & Confident", "Interested
but Concerned", and "Those who Never Will." He will talk about the
critical roles that political leadership and citizen advocacy play in
influencing change. Also, the willingness of city staff to experiment
and try out new things and measuring their effectiveness. But things
aren't finished with Portland. Roger's talk is, in a sense, a "Tale
of Two Cities:" a city that has had significant transportation
accomplishments, but one that recognizes that it has barely scratched
the surface of what is necessary to truly succeed in shifting people
out of single-occupancy motor vehicles to transit, biking, and walking.

This is a free event but pre-registration is strongly encouraged as
space is limited. Register on-line here.

Life, Money and Illusion

Thursday, October 22, 7:00 - 9:00 pm, at the Centre for Social
Innovation 215 Spadina Ave., Room 120
with co-host Green Enterprise Toronto.

Newly revised and updated, the 2nd edition of "Life, Money and
Illusion" is being launched with a talk and discussion with the
author, Mike Nickerson.

Our society does not have to grow until we drop!

While economic recovery may be around the corner, there is an
uncomfortable sense that resource draw-down (oil) and accumulating
waste (climate change) are accelerated when economic activity expands.

"Life, Money and Illusion" was written to resolve this tension.

Please Join us for the 10th Annual

Night of Dread

Sat. Oct. 24

at Toronto's Dufferin Grove Park

Night of Dread is Clay & Paper Theatre's invitation to the community
to parade our private and collective fears through the darkened
streets of Toronto. The hour-long procession returns to Dufferin
Grove Park for an evening of ceremonial festivities that compel us to
call on, mock and banish the fears that unite and divide us in these
times. Night of Dread is an unforgettable evening of pageantry, music
and masquerade incorporating towering puppets, stilt dancers, fire-
spinners and fearful masks in a daring exploration of dread.

This much-loved community celebration incorporates international folk
and theatrical traditions, drawing inspiration from festivals of
death and remembrance around the world. Come dance in the streets
with our city's finest musicians, puppeteers, dancers and stilt
walkers; together we'll laugh at our fears, waltz with death, eat the
bread of the dead, and remember those who have gone from our midst.

Clay & Paper has many costumes and puppets available for the public
to wear in the parade; come early to the Dufferin Clubhouse to avoid
disappointment!

4 PM: Parade begins assembling at Dufferin Grove Park

6 PM: Parade departs

Dress Code: Black & White
