Rene Adams –parent and advocate.

HOME SAFE TORONTO is the second in the SkyWorks series of
documentaries that deals with how families in Canada are living with
the threat and the experience of
homelessness. It shows how the housing crisis in Canada is an
expression of the increasing economic and job insecurity that has
devastated the manufacturing
sector in the Greater Toronto Area and throughout southern Ontario.
The film reveals the consequences of this “new economy,” where
families surviving on low
wages with no benefits, or on dwindling social assistance, are faced
with the terrible choice between keeping a roof over their heads or
putting food on the table.

Thanks to Councillor Janet Davis, Chair of the Community Development
and Recreation Committee, City of Toronto for her support of this
public screening

Earthlings

Bahen Centre, 40 St. George St., room 1230, University of Toronto,
just north of College & St. George

EARTHLINGS is an award-winning documentary film about the suffering of
animals for food, fashion, pets, entertainment and medical research.

Considered the most persuasive documentary ever made, EARTHLINGS is
nicknamed “the Vegan maker” for its sensitive footage shot at animal
shelters, pet stores, puppy mills, factory farms, slaughterhouses, the
leather and fur trades, sporting events, circuses and research labs.

The film is narrated by Academy Award® nominee Joaquin Phoenix and
features music by platinum-selling recording artist Moby.

Initially ignored by distributors, today EARTHLINGS is considered the
definitive animal rights film by organizations around the world.

“Of all the films I have ever made, this is the one that gets people
talking the most,” said Phoenix. “For every one person who sees
EARTHLINGS, they will tell three.”

WORDS ON THE WALL
GEOFFREY REAUME IN CONVERSATION WITH RUTH RUTH

Wed. Apr. 21
Gladstone Hotel Ballroom, 1214 Queen St West, Toronto

Silent Auction Viewing Begins 4pm, Gladstone Hotel Ballroom
Wall Walking Tour 6 pm, Main Entrance, CAMH, 1001 Queen St West
Interview / Auction 8 pm (Doors 7:30pm), Gladstone Ballroom, Gladstone
Hotel, 1214 Queen St. West

To celebrate the re-issue of his groundbreaking study, Remembrance Of
Patients Past (University of Toronto Press), scholar and activist
Geoffrey Reaume will conduct a walking tour of the wall surrounding
the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH ) grounds at 1001
Queen St. West. He will then guide the group to the Gladstone Hotel,
where he will have an on-stage conversation Ruth Ruth Stackhouse of
Friendly Spike Theatre Band. Three of the installation pieces from The
Story Behind The Wall, an exhibition by Workman Arts (WA) inspired by
Reaume’s text, will be featured on-stage. There will be a silent
auction of bricks painted by local artists. Proceeds from the auction
will be donated to the Psychiatric Survivors Archives of Toronto
(PSAT) for the purpose of purchasing commemorative plaques detailing
the history of the 19th century patient-built wall and other aspects
of unpaid patient labour. Marc Glassman, Executive Director of This Is
Not A Reading Series, will host the evening event.

REMEMBRANCE OF PATIENTS PAST Historian Geoffrey Reaume remembers
previously forgotten psychiatric patients in his groundbreaking study,
Remembrance Of Patients Past, by examining in rich detail their daily
life at the Toronto Hospital for the Insane (now called the Centre for
Addiction and Mental Health - CAMH) from 1870-1940. Psychiatric
patients endured abuse and could lead monotonous lives inside the
asylum's walls, yet these same women and men worked hard at unpaid
institutional jobs for years and decades on end, created their own
entertainment, even in some cases made their own clothes, while
forming meaningful relationships with other patients and some staff.

Using first person accounts by and about patients - including letters
written by inmates which were confiscated by hospital staff - Reaume
weaves together a tapestry of stories about the daily lives of people
confined behind brick walls that patients themselves built.

GEOFFREY REAUME is an associate professor in the Critical Disability
Studies Graduate Program at York University.

TRADE JUSTICE NOW!

European voices against a Canada-Europe free trade agreement

  Wednesday, April 21, 7:00-9:00 pm
International Student Centre (Pendarvis Room), University of Toronto,
33 St. George Street (just north of College)

Food sovereignty, public services, climate justice… All are under
threat from a new free trade agreement between Canada and the European
Union. Haven’t heard of it? That’s because even though negotiations
are halfway finished, the public is being kept in the dark.

This is the biggest, most intrusive free trade agreement Canada has
ever considered. It could be nastier than NAFTA or the WTO.
Negotiators are in Ottawa April 19 to 23 for what has been called the
most important round of the free trade talks. They’re finalizing new
rules that could affect culture, public services, environmental
protection, economic development, water, health care, broadcasting
policy, farmers and much more.

Join us to hear three prominent European social justice activists
speak about Europe’s international trade agenda and raise questions
about a free trade and investment agreement with Canada.

Featuring:
Gérard Choplin, Via Campesina European Coordination, Belgium

Rolv Hanssen, Public Services International, Norway

Frédéric Viale, Attac-France, author of L’horreur européenne, France

Presented by the Trade Justice Network
For more information: info at tradejustice.ca
The Trade Justice Network is comprised of a number of environmental
and civil society organizations as well as trade unions that have come
together to challenge the scope and process of the Canada European
Union free trade negotiations, and to highlight the need for a more
sustainable, equitable and socially just international trade regime.

ACTION FOR THE WORLD WEEK FOR ANIMALS IN LABORATORIES

Educate others about Animals abused in Laboratories
Saturday, April 24 @ 7:30 – 9:30pm
Yonge & Dundas (SW corner); 1 Dundas St East
Every year, tens of millions of animals are dissected, infected,
injected, gassed, burned and blinded in hidden laboratories on college
campuses and research facilities throughout Canada and the U.S. Still
more animals are used to test the safety of cosmetics, household
cleansers and other consumer products. These innocent primates, dogs,
cats, rabbits, rodents and other animals are used against their will
as research subjects in experiments and procedures that would be
considered sadistically cruel were they not conducted in the name of
science.

Researchers claim that they must be allowed unfettered access to
animals for experiments in order to find cures for human diseases, yet
they refuse to address the serious ethical problems of torturing
sentient creatures for research purposes. Animal experimentation has
historically hindered scientific advancement and endangered human
safety because results from animal research typically cannot be
applied to humans. On top of that only 6% of animals are tested for
medical purposes, the rest are tortured for products, such as floor
cleaner, lipstick, and soap…

Please join us for World Week for Animals in Laboratories (http://www.wwail.org/
) and help bring awareness to the cruelty involved with testing and
research on animals.
