Open Media Initiative
Filmmaker Joseph Cami will facilitate an *EIGHT-WEEK* media initiative
that will combine the diverse interests and concerns of the
participants into a film that will be openly disseminated during the
G20. This will be an interactive, creative and collaborative effort to
help each person learn more about media by experiencing different
aspects of the filmmaking process while learning how to creatively
explore the social issues that matter most to us...

Davenport MP Mario Silva has become a major player in supporting the
Conservative drive to sign a free trade agreement with Colombia - a
place where hundreds of trade unionists have murdered in recent years.
A group of community and labour activists will be canvassing/
leafteting Mario Silva's Davenport riding on:

We will be expressing our oppostion to his (and the Liberal party's)

RALLY FOR U.S. WAR RESISTER JEREMY HINZMAN AT FEDERAL COURT OF APPEAL
Tuesday, May 25, 8 am
Federal Court Building, 180 Queen St. West (west of University Ave,
Osgoode subway)
Jeremy Hinzman was the first U.S. Iraq war resister to seek refuge in
Canada because he refused to participate in the illegal and immoral
Iraq war. After unsuccessfully trying to be reassigned or recognized
as a conscientious objector by the U.S. military, Jeremy moved to
Toronto with his wife and young son in January 2004. In 2008 they
welcomed a new, Canadian daughter into their family.
A majority of Canadians have expressed their support for allowing
Jeremy and other Iraq war resisters to stay in Canada. Yet Prime
Minister Stephen Harper and Minister of Immigration Jason Kenney, who
both wanted Canada to participate in the Iraq War, continue to try to
deport resisters. War resisters Robin Long and Cliff Cornell were
sentenced to long prison terms in U.S. military prisons because the
Harper government refused to respect two House of Commons motions
(passed June 3, 2008 and March 30, 2009) to stop deporting war
resisters and to let them stay. Many other resisters, including Kim
Rivera, Dean Walcott and Phil McDowell, live under the threat of
deportation.
On May 25th, the Federal Court of Appeal will hold a hearing on
Jeremy's case.
On the same day, the first hour of debate on Bill C-440 will take
place in the House of Commons. Bill C-440 is a Private Member's Bill
which was introduced by Gerard Kennedy and seconded by Bill Siksay. If
passed, the Bill will give legal weight to the two motions on war
resisters and would force the Conservative government to respect the
will of Canadians and the will of Parliament and allow war resisters
to stay.
On May 25th, JOIN THE RALLY to support Jeremy Hinzman, his family and
all U.S. Iraq War resisters in Canada, and to call on the House of
Commons to adopt Bill C-440.
It is time for the Harper government to respect democracy. It is time
to let the war resisters stay!

Janine Benyus: Science Writer, Innovator, Biomimicry Guru

Janine Benyus' concept of biomimicry has galvanized scientists,
architects, designers and engineers into exploring new ways in which
nature's successes can inspire humanity. In the world envisioned by
science author Janine Benyus, a locust's ability to avoid collision
within a roiling cloud of its brethren informs the design of a crash-
resistant car; a self-cleaning leaf inspires a new kind of paint, one
that dries in a pattern that enables simple rainwater to wash away
dirt; and organisms capable of living without water open the way for
vaccines that maintain potency even without refrigeration -- a hurdle
that can prevent life-saving drugs from reaching disease-torn
communities. Most important, these cool tools from nature pull off
their tricks while still managing to preserve the environment that
sustains them, a life-or-death lesson that humankind is in need of
learning. As a champion of biomimicry, Benyus has become one of the
most important voices in a new wave of designers and engineers
inspired by nature.
Ms. Benyus will be interviewed by Alternatives’ Executive Editor
Nicola Ross. Nicola is an award winning writer and author who teaches
freelance writing at Humber College and the University of Toronto.

planning meetings are a great way to meet folks, hear updates and get
a sense of what is needed from various committees. We will be giving
updates on schedules, distributing posters and flyers and discussing
logistical details.

outreach, independent media, convergence for the days of action
leading up to and during the G8/20 Summits in Ontario (June 25-27,2010).

Direct action has played an integral role in most change movements,
from the civil rights era to the suffragettes, and from forest defence
to worker justice movements. This workshop is for people who are newer
to direct action, and are interested learning some basic ways to
engage. We will focus on mass mobilizations with an eye towards the
upcoming resistance to the G8/G20 in Toronto. The workshop will cover
topics including:
-examples of effective historical direct actions,
-working in affinity groups/ building your action team,
-common roles in a direct action,
-decision making at actions,
-basic safety considerations,
-knowing your rights, the legal risks and consequences of taking action.

screening of "Crude", the movie Chevron doesn’t want us to see. I

Crude is a gripping documentary about the humanitarian crisis caused
by oil production in the Ecuadorian Amazon.

to help bring directly impacted community members to Chevron's annual

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS – BECOME A COMMUNITY EDUCATOR FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE!
Students for Social Justice is an exciting new initiative to encourage
young people to become more informed and more active on social justice
issues. The project will train young people to deliver workshops at
local high schools about issues of inequality and democracy in Canada
and around the world.
The project is being launched by the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ).
The CSJ conducts research, education and advocacy in an effort to
narrow the gap between rich and poor, challenge the corporate
domination of Canadian politics, and press for policy changes that
promote economic and social justice. Volunteers will be going into
high school classrooms in pairs to facilitate 75 minute workshops that
teachers have requested. Community Educators will also have the
opportunity to help create further resources to interest youth in
social justice issues. We are looking for outgoing and energetic
volunteers who are committed to social justice. Full training will be
provided and related expenses covered.
