Harper's Attacks on Reproductive Rights - at home and abroad

Panel discussion
Mon. June 21, 7 pm
25 Cecil Street (just south of College, east of Spadina)

Women can never achieve equality or better lives for themselves and their families unless they have the right to control their reproduction. Yet the Harper government is consciously excluding the provision of abortion as part of the 'maternal and child health policy' they are pushing at the upcoming G20 meetings in Toronto. But if, as they claim, their purpose is to save lives and make women and children's lives better, this is not possible if women don't have access to a full range of reproductive choices, including abortion.

The Harper government is emboldening the anti-choice minority in this country. If they are allowed to pursue the Bush-era policy of cutting funding for abortion in developing countries, they may begin to more directly attack abortion rights in Canada. JOIN US FOR A PANEL DISCUSSION on the stakes in these G20 talks, and how we can organize to defend abortion rights at home and abroad.

Toxic Tour: Call for Environmental Justice! Take the Toxic Tour of Toronto

Wednesday, June 23, 11:00 am
Alexandra Park (Dundas and Bathurst), Toronto

On June 23rd in response to the Toronto Community Mobilization Network's call for a day of action on environmental justice, organizers in the city will be guiding a tour through Toronto to expose the institutions most responsible for the environmental and social impacts of Canada's extractive industries both at home and abroad. Canada is home to 75% of the world's mining and exploration companies, making it a global leader in this industry. Canada's place within the G8 nations is largely due to the exploitation of Indigenous peoples, their lands and rural poor for mining, tar sands and oil/gas exploitation.

We encourage folks coming to dress up and challenge those in power with costumes, floats and fancied up bicycles. We will be working on several floats in lead up but encourage all to dress up for our action. Ideas for costumes: Executives with blood on their hands (fake blood provided) , corporate zombies, people covered in Tar Sands bitumen (mud provided) and any other ideas you have.

People's Assembly on Climate Justice: Moving Forward from Cochabamba

Wednesday June 23, 7 pm
Ryerson Student Campus Centre, 55 Gould Street, Room SCC115, Toronto

Many of us in the climate justice movement gained inspiration from the successful cross-pollination of a variety of movements during the World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth in Cochabamba, Bolivia this past April. In the lead up to the G20, the Toronto Community Mobilization Network has begun to build and nurture what we hope will become strong, ongoing connections between multiple local struggles and organizers.

JUSTICE FOR OUR COMMUNITIES!
NO TO G8/G20! YES TO TAKING BACK OUR CITY

Friday, June 25th, 2:30pm
Allan Gardens (Carleton St. and Sherbourne St)
RALLY. MARCH. BLOCK PARTY. TENT CITY.

From June 25th and 27th, 2010, the world’s twenty richest countries (the G8 and G20) will send their ruling elite, along with heads of the IMF and World Bank, to meet in Huntsville and then in Toronto, to talk exploitation, wealth, and greed. These ‘leaders’ have shredded the public sector and social spending, criminalized the poor, immigrants and racialized communities, continued to plunder Indigenous lands and trash the environment, deported our families and friends, gutted the unions, and closed hospitals and schools while they grant tax cuts to the rich and corporations and boost police and military budgets. These disgusting policies have enacted devastation around the world and are reflected right here in Toronto.

We are the people severely impacted by this agenda. Toronto's communities are uniting to take back what is ours! Join us on the streets for Justice For Our Communities!

A Blooming Business

52 min., Netherlands/Kenya
Fri. June 25, 6:45 p.m.
Gardiner Museum

The roses we enjoy may come with more thorns than we realize. Delving deep into the heart of the global flower industry, A BLOOMING BUSINESS shows us the difficult reality behind the pretty flowers. In Kenya, giant flower factories use massive amounts of pesticides and chemicals to keep their flowers alive and then pollute the local water supply, harming the very same people they employ. An investigation reveals the horrific working conditions and sexual abuse that the workers must endure in order to keep their job. A BLOOMING BUSINESS explores the human and environmental repercussions of the floral industry. A rose may no longer smell as sweet.

G20 Summit: Prayer Vigil for Peace and Justice

Sun. June 27, 2 p.m.
St James Park (King and Church)

Join the Student Christian Movement and friends for a nonviolent, prayerful action, to remember the victims of social and economic oppression in the G20 countries, and of IMF/World Bank economic policies worldwide, and to express our hope that the world leaders gathered in Toronto will act in the interests of all people, rather than just the economic elite.

We will gather on Sunday, June 27, at 2 pm, on the grounds of St James Anglican Cathedral (King and Church), and walk to the barricade, where we will remain in prayer and vigil for as long as possible. Some of the participants may choose to obstruct the entry point or the road, and may be arrested, but those who don't choose to risk arrest can also be full participants in the vigil.

We encourage everyone interested in participating to attend, if possible, a planning/training session on Thursday June 24, at 6 pm, at St Simon the Apostle, 525 Bloor St E. It is especially important that anyone who may risk arrest should come to this session.
