Anti-Native Organizing & the “Caledonia Crisis”: Countering the Right Wing
Backlash

Tues. August 3, 7 p.m.
OISE, Rm. 5-170 (252 Bloor St. W., at St. George)

After the Six Nations people of the Grand River territory began the
reclamation of the “Douglas Creek Estates” housing development in
Caledonia in February of 2006, a grass-roots anti-Native campaign has been
building in nearby white communities. Led by full-time organizers backed
by local developers these anti-native activists have organized a “militia”
to oppose “native lawlessness,” held regular protests against native smoke
shops, and have consistently supported the actions of local governments to
criminalize Six Nations land defenders for the past four years. The
protests they have organized against Six Nations have been attended by
neo-Nazis from elsewhere in Southern Ontario, and more recently – in the
wake of the Israeli attack on the Gaza Flotilla – anti-native organizers
have sought to tie struggles for indigenous self-determination on Turtle
Island to “Muslim Hatemongers” and so-called “terrorist formations” such
as Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Tamil Tigers while at the same time
solidifying the links between “democratic” settler states such as Canada
and Israel.

On August 3rd, join us for a panel discussion examining the nature of the
right wing backlash to the “Caledonia Crisis” in the context of a growing
right-wing populist resurgence taking place in the United States and
Canada.

This event is being organized as part of the July 31 2010 “Call to Action
Against Racism and Fascism” issued by Portland anti-fascists after ARA
member Luke Querner was shot by suspected fascists on the evening of March
27th 2009. This event is co-organized by Common Cause and the CUPE 3903
First Nations Solidarity Working Group (FNSWG) and sponsored by the
Pan-African Solidarity Network. For more information please email
3903fnswg at gmail.com

About the presenters:
Mark Corbiere is a member of the Ojibway nation and is a long time member

struggles.

Undergrad Blues: How to Apply to Post-Graduate Programs

Thursday, August 5, 6pm

The Centre for Women and Trans People @ U of T, 563 Spadina Ave , Room 100

Whether you are looking into law school, masters programs or doctoral
programs, this workshop is a great place to start. Workshop covers
discusses reference letters, standardized testing, funding, pre-selection
research, setting timelines and writing personal statements to compile a
winning application package.

Why Is This An Equity Issue?
• Because education is power yet this door to upward equity slams shut to
those of us from marginalized/underrepresented groups.
• Because this information is not readily accessible to
immigrant/racialized students who are more likely to be the first in the
family to attend university.
• Because equal access to higher education is fundamental to equalizing
power relations in society.
• Because low-income students can not afford exclusive $300 sessions on
the topic such as those offered by Kaplan, Princeton Review, Oxford
Seminars and other institutions which make up the “Get Into Law/Grad
School” industry.

Facilitated by: Saron Ghebressellassie
Saron Ghebressellassie, activist and scholar, has completed multiple
successful law school applications, doctoral applications, masters
applications and over thirty successful scholarship applications.

Refreshments will be served!

Countdown to Zero

In Toronto it’s playing at the Cumberland Theatre (near Bloor and Bay)
http://www.toronto.com/documentary/movie/648313

Documentary probes a new generation of nuclear dangers

Dr. Strangelove isn’t dead, he’s just moved to a city near you, says
“Countdown to Zero,” a film that means to put a new generation of
anti-nuclear campaigners back on the peace path their grandparents
pioneered as Cold War protesters.

http://www.thestar.com/news/world/article/839693--documentary-probes-a-new-generation-of-nuclear-dangers

Disarmament for Some - Co-opting the Anti-Nuclear Movement

Countdown to Zero is one component of a larger and coherent foundation
campaign to stoke up public fears about nuclear weapons for the purpose of
extending a near-monopoly on nuclear weapons, and legitimating a more
aggressive foreign policy aimed at regime change in Iran and elsewhere.
The consensus behind those who funded and produced the film has little to
do with disarmament, and a lot to do with stabilizing the American empire.
