Welcome To Toronto
Watch the 6 min. music video produced by young, progressive, local enviro rappers concerned about the upcoming municipal election.
http://breathetoronto.org/
Toronto’s election is just days away. On October 25th, we will decide the future of our city for the next four years. With hundreds of people dying as a result of the toxic smog cloud that hangs over our city every summer, TTC fares ever-increasing while traffic clogs the roads and poisons our air, and climate change already causing major crop failures, starvation, and wars, the time has come for serious action. While concrete and lawnmowers raze over the rich, fertile soils that could be feeding us directly with fresh foods of all varieties, that actually produce pure oxygen as they grow, talk of Toronto’s Food Security is almost completely absent from mainstream discussion, save for the words and actions of one unassuming candidate. Meanwhile, most of our meals are imported over thousands of diesel-spewing kilometers, while thousands within our city lack proper access to even that nutrition. The time has come to set things straight. The time has come for real action.
Sign the Toronto Clean Air Act to demand our City Council move immediately to deal with this crisis, and make sure our next Council is made up of responsible people, who are conscious and care about these life and death issues.
Find out where your local candidates stand by checking the Toronto Environmental Alliance’s report card at: http://www.torontoenvironment.org/voteto/reportcard/wardmap

Engaged Buddhism, Protest, and Loving-Kindness

Monday, October 18 · 7:00pm - 11:30pm
Peace Lounge, University of Toronto, 252 Bloor st. West

U Pyinya Zawta & U Agga Nyana visit Toronto to speak about Engaged Buddhism, Protest, and Loving-Kindness

The Saffron Revolution of September 2007 has changed Burma’s history forever and placed Buddhist monks and nuns quite literally in the front ranks of peaceful resistance to Burma’s brutal and illegitimate dictatorship. This evening will focus on the way Loving-Kindness and other non-violent means were used to meet the brutali...ty of Burma's dictatorship. "Our spiritual message is to bring about a clear, more compassionate way and more harmonious relationship within all aspects of life in the country."

For Buddhist monks and nuns, turning their begging bowls upside down indicates their refusal to accept alms from the ruthless rulers and their servants. This follows a tradition established in the time of the Buddha by which monastic law allows monks to rebuke those who behave against “Dharma” (Buddhist Law).

In Burma’s Buddhist society, monks are highly respected, because they are disciples of Buddha who taught universal loving kindness, wisdom, peace and compassion. But we monks are facing many challenges at this critical moment in history.

Thousands of Buddhist monks and nuns who were praying for peace were brutally attacked on the streets of Rangoon and other cities in September 2007. Burma’s regime committed these atrocities in full view of the world.

Red Tent Canada Day of Action for a Federal Housing Strategy
Toronto Solidarity Rally: All levels of government must respond to the housing crisis!

Tuesday, October 19th, 12-1pm
Ministry of Housing – 777 Bay St. (southeast corner of Bay & College)

Canada is currently the only G8 country without a housing strategy. The result has been a housing and homelessness crisis that the United Nations described in a 2009 report as a national emergency.

In Toronto we will gather in front of the Ministry of Housing to send a message to all three levels of government:

    • Support Bill C-304 and Introduce a Federal Housing Strategy!
    • Ontarians need a fully-funded long-term provincial affordable housing strategy!
    • On October 25th vote for housing - Toronto’s new Mayor and City Council must stand up for homeless people and low-income tenants!

From Halifax to Vancouver, simultaneous actions are set to take place across the country on the 19th and during the week leading up to the Canada Day of Action. Ottawa will play host to a day-long action for housing: people will gather on Parliament Hill with 100 red tents to stand as symbols of Canada’s homelessness crisis and the growing support for a federal housing strategy.

To find out more about Bill C-304 and the Red Tent Campaign, or to help pitch in by sponsoring a tent, visit the campaign site at www.redtents.org

The Toronto Solidarity event for a Federal Housing Strategy is a joint effort of ACORN Toronto, Advocacy Centre for Tenants Ontario, The Dream Team, FORWARD, Toronto Disaster Relief Committee, and Voices from the Street. TTC fare can be provided. For more information please contact: dirksy at lao.on.ca

Organizing In Crisis - Anti-capitalist dilemmas and priorities

with Nick Dyer-Witheford

Friday, October 22, 7pm
Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, 252 Bloor Street W., Room 5250
The anti-globalization moment of the 1990s and early years of the 21st century was a tumultuous time of change and radical action in anti-capitalist movements. New political configurations sprouted, with destructured organizing models – horizontal and non-hierarchical with a penchant for affinity over authority, autonomy and heterogeneity over order and homogeneity. This movement reached a fever pitch quickly, and just as quickly seemed to dissipate after the fall of the World Trade Centres in New York City. What was the anti-globalization moment, and how does it compare to today’s moment of economic crisis? What are today's anti-capitalist movements and how are they configured? How do these movements promote or impede an anti-capitalist future?

Nick Dyer-Witheford will examine the anti-globalization movement, the current economic crisis, and anti-capitalist concepts and strategies to provide fodder for current movements.
Organized by Upping the Anti: A journal of theory and action (www.uppingtheanti.org) and the Ontario Public Interest Research Group (www.opirguoft.org). This event is wheelchair accessible.

The Toronto Rape Crisis Centre/Multicultural Women Against Rape (TRCC/MWAR) hosts its 30th Annual Take Back the Night (TBTN)

Take Back the Night is about bringing visibility and exposure to the impact of sexual violence in women’s lives. It’s a space created to ensure women and children can take up space and have our voices heard.

We demand our rights to safety, and lives free of the fear and perpetration of violence. We demand Aboriginal rights, equal status for all women, safe affordable housing, rights for sex trade workers, de-criminalized prostitution, safe shelters, health care, child care, education, employment, the raising of social assistance rates by 40%, immigration status for all, and the raising the minimum wage now. Without access to a safe place to live, an adequate income, child care and other community resources, women are being left to face violent situations. We, as survivors, demand lives free of sexual violence, murder, living in poverty, police injustice and any violence that is directed towards women and children.

TBTN is a Trans-Positive, wheelchair accessible event with ASL interpretation, Attendant Services, childcare and refreshments.

Building Better Cycling Arteries in Cities: Lessons for Toronto examined how to accommodate cyclists on arterial roads. Since these streets carry a high volume of high-speed motor vehicles, providing safe passage for cyclists is especially critical.

Case studies from Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Portland, New York City and Berlin demonstrated how policies and practices improve cycling arteries. Suitable bicycle facilities and sufficient bikeway networks along with policies that support cycling are important in creating safe and convenient cycling arteries in cities.
