INFORMATION SECURITY – Understanding and mitigating digital surveillance

Surveillance and Privacy Erosion have become increasingly pervasive as a
result of the widespread adoption and daily use of digital tools. People
in digital-centric societies produce a growing stream of personal data
of interest to various state/corporate entities. Although those engaged
in political activism are obvious targets for such surveillance, they
are often among the most technically uneducated.

This workshop will touch on the salient points and characters involved
in the history of the evolution of surveillance, and discuss some
available methods for mitigating and countering this threat.

WORKSHOP DETAILS

Format: Interactive presentation (presentation, tutorial, Q&A)
Intended Audience : Activists, internet users, anyone with an interest
in Privacy and Surveillance
Length: 1.5 - 2 hours
Prerequisites: None
Recommended preparation: A basic familiarity with internet usage

WEBINAR

Sex, lies & pharmaceuticals: How drug companies plan to profit from “female sexual dysfunction”

With Dr. Barbara Mintzes, co-author of the new book by the same name
Tues. Dec. 14, 9:30-10:30 a.m. Pacific (12:30-1:30 p.m. Eastern)

The Canadian Women’s Health Network welcomes drug assessment specialist Dr. Barbara Mintzes to discuss the medicalization of women’s sexuality by pharmaceutical companies. Mintzes will look at the ways women’s sexual difficulties are being repackaged as symptoms of a disorder called “female sexual dysfunction” in order to feed a marketing machine that promises to “cure” it. Mintzes will use examples from her research for Sex, lies and pharmaceuticals to demonstrate how global drug companies are exploiting the exploration of women’s sexual dissatisfaction in an attempt to create the next billion dollar disease.

Mintzes is an Assistant Professor at the UBC Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, part of the UBC Centre for Health Services & Policy Research, and a Steering Committee member of Women and Health Protection.

Please email info at cwhn.ca to register. Space is limited - reserve your place today!

VIGIL FOR U.S. WAR RESISTER DEAN WALCOTT AT FEDERAL COURT

Tuesday, December 14, 8 am
Federal Court Building, 180 Queen St. West (west of University Ave, Osgoode subway)

Canadians have spoken out overwhelmingly in support of Iraq war resisters being allowed to stay in Canada. These young men and women made a difficult decision to not participate in the illegal and immoral war in Iraq. They have shown tremendous courage, leaving behind their homes, their family, friends and careers.

Yet Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Minister of Immigration Jason Kenney, who both wanted Canada to participate in the Iraq War, continue to deport Iraq war resisters. War resisters Robin Long and Cliff Cornell were sentenced to long prison terms in U.S. military prisons because the Harper government refused to respect two House of Commons motions (passed June 3, 2008 and March 30, 2009) to stop deporting war resisters and to let them stay. Many war resisters are living under the threat of deportation.

On December 14th, the Federal Court will hear an appeal by Iraq war resister Dean Walcott. Dean, a former U.S. Marine who served two tours of duty in Iraq, is appealing the negative decisions on his Pre-Removal Risk Assessment and his request to be allowed to stay in Canada on Humanitarian and Compassionate grounds.

Join a vigil to support Dean Walcott and to demand that the Harper government respect Canadian democracy and the will of the Canadian people. It is time to let the war resisters stay!

Organized by the WAR RESISTERS SUPPORT CAMPAIGN

Force of Nature: the David Suzuki Movie
2010
Playing now at the Review Cinema on Roncesvailles

Wed. Dec. 15, 9:30 p.m.
Thur. Dec. 16, 9:30 p.m.

David Suzuki is, without a doubt, one of the most fascinating Canadians. This film documents Suzuki's Legacy Lecture, given in Vancouver in 2009, and weaves a narrative about Suzuki's life using this speech as the anchor. Suzuki, an accomplished academic and television broadcaster, has noted how he used to deliver the message of being responsible towards the environment, now he has literally become the message. Sturla Gunnarson (Beowulf & Grendel) gives us a snippet of David Suzuki's life, filled with both politically charged moments fighting for the environment and touching personal ones, leaving viewers filled with both dread and hope for the future.

21st Rupert Hotel Memorial

Thur. December 16, 11 am - noon
NW corner of Parliament and Queens Streets
Everyone is welcome.

We will feature musicians and guest speakers including:

Barbara Hall, Chief Commissioner of the Ontario Human Rights Commission (who was the city councillor for the area at the time of the Rupert fire and who has worked tirelessly over the years for better housing for all); and,
Michael Shapcott, Director, Affordable Housing and Social Innovation at the Wellesley Institute (who managed the Rupert pilot project, an innovative housing and community development initiative that grew out of the ashes of the Rupert fire to provide homes for 525 people).

On December 23, 1989, a fire roared through the Rupert Hotel, a rooming house on the northwest corner of Queen and Parliament Streets in downtown Toronto. Ten people died in the fire – making it one of the worst in Toronto’s history. Every year, a group of people – including people who knew those who lived in the Rupert, rooming house residents and other low-income tenants, housing advocates and others – gather at the site of the former Rupert Hotel to remember those who died and to re-commit, in their name, to the campaign for safe and affordable homes.

As the memorial gathering moves into its 21st year, advocates will focus on the urgent need to ensure that licensed, safe, healthy and affordable rooming houses are allowed in all parts of Toronto – instead of being restricted to certain neighbourhoods.
