Vigil in solidarity with the 'Las Pavas Community', 123 farming families in Colombia

Monday, March 28, 12 noon
at the Colombian Consulate, 1 Dundas St. (at Yonge St. - Yonge-Dundas station)

Christian Peacemaker Teams Colombia has asked for North Americans and Europeans to hold vigils on Monday, March 28, 2011, to be in solidarity with the 123
families of the 'Las Pavas Community' - in the township of Buenos Aires, El Peñón municipal jurisdiction, Bolivar department, Colombia.

These families are planning to return on Monday, March 28, 2011 to a piece of land that they previously farmed for food. They were forcibly removed from this
land by riot police about two years ago so that the land could be used by a disputed absentee landlord to grow palm trees for export of palm oil to be used for biofuel and cosmetics. CPT Colombia has accompanied this community since that time. CPT Colombia was also one of the sponsors of a successful campaign to have 'the Body Shops' corporation stop buying palm oil for its cosmetics from the Daabon Corporation whose subsidiary has taken this land. A more complete history can be read at the links below.

As Stewart Vriesinga, of CPT Colombia noted, "we want the Colombian authorities to know that the world is watching how they will respond to people trying to
feed themselves instead of watching their land be used for an exported product."

We plan to deliver a letter - to the Colombian Consul in Toronto.

Community Townhall: Protect Public Housing

Tues. 29 March · 6:00 - 9:00 pm
St. Lawrence Recreation Centre (Youth Lounge upstairs), 230 the Esplanade

We are facing a housing crisis in Toronto. It is impossible to find quality and affordable housing in this city. Waiting lists for subsidies in public housing are at
a appalling 15-21 years. Rents have skyrocketed and continue to rise. Working class people sometimes have to choose between paying their rent and putting
food on the table. Our housing is regularly left in a state in disrepair, with the Toronto Community Housing Cor...poration (TCHC) being over 300 million
dollars behind in maintenance. This is direct result of the massive cuts to the funding of public housing by Federal and Provincial governments.

Meanwhile, the corrupt TCHC bosses have no problems carrying these cuts through while lavishly spending on spas, cruises and parties, as well as giving out
un-tendered contracts to their buddies. Furthermore, the recent scandal has opened up the TCHC to attacks by the right wing.

Rob Ford’s “Solution” is to sell off our public housing to his friends on Bay Street. The future of our homes and communities are to lie in the hands of big
business profiteers. This will mean more run-down units, cuts to subsidies, evictions and layoffs of maintenance staff so that the rich can make another buck.
Since many of our homes are on valuable downtown lands, new owners will likely consider building condo projects which would be more profitable to them.

We must ensure that our families and children have access to affordable and quality housing. We know the money is there because both Conservative and
Liberal governments have no problem handing billions to big business and banks through tax breaks and bailouts. We demand the funding for affordable and
quality housing for all. Furthermore, tenants should democratically control all of the TCHC. We cannot compromise on the future of our communities.

Smash the Rob Ford Agenda of corporate ownership of our communities! Out with the corrupt TCHC Bosses! For Tenants Control of Housing!

Tools for Change presents:

Theory and Practice of Photojournalism

Wednesday, March 30, 6:30-8:30pm
with Jon Elmer

Photographs influence and transform politics. They transcend language barriers, reveal hidden realities, and test the boundaries
of what is "appropriate." Behind every influential photograph is someone holding a camera. How can we ensure that our photographs are useful to movements
for social justice? Learn how to get started and what to expect, how to navigate conflict journalism, political minefields, creativity and its handcuffs.
Discussion and workshop with Jon Elmer, independent photojournalist who has lived abroad since 2003 covering the West Bank and Gaza Strip. He is a
regular contributor to Al Jazeera English, and his work has appeared in Le Monde diplomatique, The Journal of Palestine Studies and The
Progressive, among others. He has covered war and liberation movements throughout the Middle East, including Palestine, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, and Lebanon.

Open pit quarry proposed for several thousand acres of prime farm land just north of Shelbourne.

It's potentially far worse than the Site 41 proposal. The massive open pit mine is being proposed for the middle of the Melancthon potato country. The formal
application for this attack on Ontario by a Boston hedge fund has now been made giving opponents only 40 days to examine a stack three feet high of reports and
provide a coherent opposition. Come to this public meeting to see what is being considered and how you can help protect the Province.

Thur. March 31, 6 to 8 PM
181 Bay Street, # 4700, Toronto.
Come in the Wellington Street door on the south side a little west of Yonge Street and take the elevator to the 47th floor. Bring your best thinking.
Some of the elements of the proposal include:

Up to 150 large ore trucks per hour entering and leaving the site 24 hours per day.
Tearing up over 1700 acres of potato country as a start. The company has purchased over 8000 acres.
Managing” forever 600,000 000 litres of water per day with no proposed treatment facility to take out the blasting chemicals and no trust fund to pay for dealing with the water when the limestone revenues have disappeared.
Digging 200 feet below the water table.
For more information on this visit the CAUSE website http://www.citizensalliance.ca/

Please RSVP to Carol Ellis at 416-360-2094 or cellis at northwatercapital.com and feel free to pass this meeting invitation on to any other interested parties.

RAISE THE RATES, RESTORE THE SPECIAL DIET: March on the McGuinty Government

Fri. April 1, 12 noon - 3:00 pm
Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto

March on the McGuinty Government
RAISE WELFARE AND DISABILITY RATES, RESTORE THE SPECIAL DIET!

It has been 16 long years since Mike Harris cut welfare and froze disability. McGuinty's Liberals have been in power for half that time and done nothing to
deal with poverty. In fact people are worse off today. It would take a 55% increase to bring benefits to pre-Harris levels. If benefit levels were restored to the
same level of spending power as they had in 1994, a single person on Ontario Works would now be receiving $904 a month instead of the miserable $593 now
being issued.

Now as the economy continues to slump and the need is greater than ever, this Government is destroying the vital Special Diet Allowance that has enabled
people to survive. The new system they have proposed will provide benefits for fewer conditions and applicants will have to release medical information and
face other intrusive measures designed to prevent access to the benefit. Within the Liberals’ own statement about this measure, they refer to the fact that ‘many
will not be eligible’, and this is a move to ‘respect taxpayers’. The new Special Diet comes in to affect on April 1st, 2011 and all those who are not eligible
under the new program will be cut off by July 31st.

With no intention of dealing with the crisis of poverty they have created, the Liberals are setting up an 18 month long review of the welfare system to divert
us from taking action to challenge them. We don't need a review to tell us we're hungry. What we need is decent income and a 55% increase in the rates now!

UNITED WE EAT, DIVIDED WE STARVE! March on the McGuinty Government April 1st!
