Up Against the Temp Shop: May Day Assembly on Immigrant Rights
Mon. April 4, 6:30pm
72 Lib, 350 Victoria Street, Ryerson University

Migrant Justice organizers across Turtle Island have fought to create workplace protections, benefits, access to services, and full status for undocumented and
precarious status workers. On April 4th, join us to continue this struggle! In the face of cutbacks, privatization, and forced displacement around the globe, and
anti-immigrant policies in Canada, we continue to build a community-labour vision to ensure that the rights of the most vulnerable and precarious members of
the working class continue to be fore-fronted during May Day, and within all struggles for justice.

Supported by: Migrant Workers Alliance for Change, OPSEU Workers of Color, CAW Sam Gindin Chair for Social Justice, OPIRG UT, Greater Toronto
Workers Assembly, Socialist Project, New Socialist Group, Justice for Migrant Workers, Latin American Trade Union Coalition, Good Jobs for All.

THE REFUGEES OF THE BLUE PLANET

Wednesday, April 6 at 7 PM - FREE ADMISSION

NFB Cinema - 150 John St.

Directed by Hélène Choquette and Jean-Philippe Duval, 2006, 53 minutes. In French with English subtitles.

Each year, millions of people the world over are driven to forced displacement. From the Maldives to Brazil, and even closer to home, here in Canada, the disturbing accounts of people who have been uprooted are amazingly similar. The enormous pressure placed on rural populations as a result of the degradation of their life-supporting environment is driving them increasingly further from their way of life. The Refugees of the Blue Planet sheds light on the little-known plight of a category of individuals who are suffering the repercussions of this reality: environmental refugees.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Dr. Laura Westra, PhD in Law & Professor at York University & University of Windsor, Faculty of Law, and Dr. Rafi Mustafa, who is the past president and current member of the Board for International Development and Relief Foundation (IDRF).

Green Screens partners films from the NFB with experts and panellists selected by the Canadian Institute for Environmental Law and Policy. If you are interested in the environment, Green Screens will entertain and inform you.

Tools for Change presents:

Poster and Leaflet Design 101

Wednesday, April 6, 6:30-8:30pm
with Nahed Mansour

Every successful event or action involves effective promotion. Sometimes word of mouth is enough, but activists usually depend
on catchy outreach material to bring out the crowds. Design tools and training are typically difficult and expensive to access. Learn
how to work around these constraints and to start making posters and leaflets you can brag about! Workshop with feminist anti-racist
activist and artist Nahed Mansour.
Tools for Change is a series of skills-sharing and skills-building workshops designed to help you gain the tools for doing research, education, and action for
social and ecological justice. For full schedule of trainings, visit: www.opirgtoronto.org/training

Four Wings and a Prayer
Directed by Nick de Pencier, 2007, 80 min 42 s

Wed. April 6, 4 p.m.
At the NFB, 150 John Street
Free

Four Wings and a Prayer is a documentary about one of the world's most beautiful and mysterious creatures: the Monarch butterfly. Nowhere in nature is there a more powerful mix of scientific marvel, awesome beauty, and epic struggle for survival. What scientists are at a loss to fully explain is how the Monarch makes a seemingly impossible three thousand kilometre journey from Canada over mountains, through storms, and across large bodies of water to its small and remote over wintering grounds in the mountains of Mexico. Based on the book by Sue Halpern.

Every Wednesday at 4pm, the NFB Mediatheque presents a favourite NFB title on the big screen for FREE! The perfect midweek break and an easy way to catch up on NFB classics!

Rebel Films presents:

Made in Dagenham
2010, 113 minutes

Friday, April 8, 7 p.m.
OISE, 252 Bloor St. West, Room 2-212 (St. George Subway Station)
Everyone welcome. $4 donation requested.

In 1968, the Ford auto factory in Dagenham was one of the largest single private employers in the United Kingdom. In addition to the thousands of male
employees, there are also 187 underpaid women machinists who primarily assemble the car seat upholstery in poor working conditions. Dissatisfied, the women
fight for a better deal. However, Rita O'Grady learns that there is a larger issue in this dispute: that women are paid an appalling fraction of the men's wages for
the same work across the board on the sole basis of their sex. Refusing to tolerate this inequality any longer, O'Grady leads a strike by her fellow machinists for
equal pay for equal work. What follows would test the patience of all involved in a grinding labour and political struggle that ultimately would advance the
cause of women's rights around the world.
Marie Clarke Walker, Canadian Labour Congress Executive V.P., will lead off a discussion on the film.

From Wisconsin to Toronto: Workers Say Enough is Enough!

Friday, April 8th, 6:30-9:30pm
Steelworkers Hall, 25 Cecil Street

Frustrated with your job being referred to as “gravy”? Angry to see that workers’ hard-won gains are being eroded? Want to defend public services and good jobs
for all?

Join us for pizza and banner-making for the April 9th “Rally for a Toronto for Everyone”, followed by a discussion about the Wisconsin
labour mobilization. This event will bring together labour activists from Toronto and Wisconsin and is an opportunity for us to learn lessons of solidarity and resistance.

In a time of fiscal crisis, public sector workers are being pitted against other workers and being told they should shoulder the costs of
the bail-outs and get the economy back on track, an economy that wasn’t working for all workers in the first place. The current
struggle of public sector workers in Wisconsin has put labour movement activism back on the map. After decades of defeat, the struggle in
Wisconsin has shown the ability of labour to mobilize.

Mining and Resistance in Central America
Canadian Corporations at War Against Rights of Indigenous Peoples

Sunday April 10, 2p.m. - 4 p.m.
OISE, 252 Bloor Street West, Room 5150, Toronto
No Registration. Everyone welcome.

Presenters: Juan Carlos Jimenez, Megan Cotton-Kinch.
All are organizers in the Mining Injustice Solidarity Network.

Canadian mining companies are continuing to contaminate water, poison land and tear apart communities in Central America.

In El Salvador, the government has ruled that metal mining would fatally pollute the rivers needed for agriculture, but the country itself is now being sued for 77 million under a free trade agreement. In Guatemala, Mayan communities are fighting back through community-controlled referendums, but face the imposition of martial law. In Honduras, the Canadian government was one of the first to legitimize a bloody military coup, which replaced a left-leaning government with one more friendly to mining interests.

Organizers from Mining Injustice Solidarity Network will present how Canada is complicit in intimidation, assassinations, anti-environmental lawsuits and military coups and how we in Canada can join in solidarity with the struggle for justice.
