Gasland

Free Film Screening and Discussion

Monday April 18, 6:30 p.m. – 8:15 p.m.
Annette Library, 145 Annette Street

The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of "fracking" or
hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a "Saudia Arabia of natural gas" just beneath us. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for
drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that
residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called GASLAND. Part
verite travelogue, part expose, part mystery, part bluegrass banjo meltdown, part showdown."

Ekta Parishad

Indian March for Justice, for the rights to Food, to Land, to Water, to Seeds and to Forest - With Paul Schwartzentruber

Mon, April 18, 7pm

at Friend’s House 60 Lowther Ave. (St. George subway)

The nonviolent march for justice—Jansatyagraha 2012—is being organized by the Ekta Parishad movement and will take place in India from October 2011 to October 2012. This will be a powerful and symbolic event. In its final stage—during October 2012—there will be over 100,000 people gathered together, poor people, landless peasants, tribals and untouchables. They will march for thirty days in order to have their rights to livelihood resources and a dignified life recognized.

This march is a historic opportunity to shed light on the fundamental questions of social and economic justice: the sharing of wealth, access to natural resource, food sovereignty, the debts of poor countries, the place of the most deprived in our societies, the role of women—as well as the issues of participative democracy, the responsibilities of multinationals and the international financial system. It is opportunity to decide on a model of development which will be sustainable and equitable. It is not a case of assisting peoples in situations of misery but rather of recognizing their rights and supporting their initiative to gain control over the resources that are indispensable to their lives, to enable them to work and have initiative.

We invite individuals and civil society organizations to support this march in whatever way is possible. The March Jan Satyagraha 2012 is coming fast, and, less than two years before this historic event in India and around the world, preparations are in full swing. To evaluate what has been done so far, to organize it, and to plan a series of actions during the next 2 years, the Toronto team of Ekta Parishad, will be hosting its first meeting.

Action Alert - Cycling Advisory Committee needs your help!

The Toronto Cycling Advisory Committee (TCAC) advises City Council and staff on the design, development and delivery of bicycle policies, programs and facilities to promote and enhance cycling. Over the last several months, the Toronto Cyclists Union has received many inquiries regarding the continuing status of the TCAC. In response to these concerns, we made several attempts to learn more about the City’s plans for reinstating the committee. Despite our efforts, we were not given any indication of what was being planned. This morning, Mayor Ford’s Executive Committee tabled a report recommending not to reinstate the TCAC.

The Toronto Cyclists Union does not support this recommendation as it diminishes the opportunity for cyclists’ input in creating safer streets. We are disappointed that this decision was made without any consultation with the cycling community. If the TCAC is not reinstated, this unilateral decision will signal that Mayor Ford's administration does not regard safety for all road users as a priority.

Your safety is important to us. For that reason, we ask that you come to the Executive Committee meeting where this recommendation will be discussed to share your views. We especially encourage those of you with children to speak up regarding your concerns for the safety of your families. The meeting will be held at the following date and time:

Date: Wednesday April 20, 2011
Time: starting at 9:30am
Location: Toronto City Hall, Second Floor, Committee Room 1

To make a deputation at Executive Committee, e-mail exc at toronto.ca with your request. Please “cc” us at info at bikeunion.to.

If you can't make it to the meeting, you can still let the Councillors on the Executive Committee know how important TCAC is to you. Please “cc” us atinfo at bikeunion.to.

City council and staff need to hear ideas and perspectives from the cycling community in order to make informed decisions for building better streets. Eliminating the TCAC without providing a concrete alternative diminishes this process. Let’s work together to convince the Executive Committee that the TCAC must be reinstated!

Ride safely,
The bike union team

The End of Poverty?
2008, 106 minutes

Thur. April 21, 7 p.m.
OISE, 252 Bloor St. West, Room 2-212 (St. George Subway Station)
Everyone welcome. $4 donation requested.

The End of Poverty? is a thought-provoking and very timely documentary by award-winning filmmaker Philippe Diaz. It argues that poverty is not an accident, that it began with military conquest, slavery and colonization that resulted in the seizure of land, minerals and forced labor. Today, global poverty has reached new levels because of unfair debt, trade and tax policies -- in other words, wealthy countries exploiting poor, developing countries. The End of Poverty? asks why today 20% of the planet's population uses 80% of its resources and consumes 30% more than the planet can regenerate?

Walk to Stop the Mega Quarry Open Pit Mine

Starting: Earth Day, April 22, 12 pm
Queen's Park
Finishing; Dufferin County, Melancthon Township, April 26

Five Day Walk with Native drumming and singing beginning at Queen’s Park, ending Melancthon Township, Ontario, Canada to ask Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, Opposition Leaders Tim Hudack and the Hon. Andrea Horwath, the Right Hon. Stephen Harper, the Hon. Jack Layton, and Elizabeth May, to STOP THE MEGA QUARRY OPEN PIT MINE.

A US Hedge Fund, Baupost, based in Boston, operating in Canada as The Highland Companies, has applied for a license to build an enormous open pit quarry, 2316 acres, 100 km north of Toronto in Melancthon Township. It will be the second largest open pit mine in North America, largest in Canada. The quarry will destroy for ever thousands of acres of prime productive farmland. The area chosen is the highest point in Southern Ontario, right on the edge of the Niagara Escarpment, an officially declared UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Below this valuable land lies priceless limestone which filters the water and an aquifer that is the Headwaters of several major river systems in Southern Ontario. The quarry will severely damage these valuable water systems which originate in this area, Ontario’s food supply, and the drinking water of more than one million people. Thousands of acres will be blasted 200 ft below the water table! As proposed it is one-third the size of Toronto. A serious concern is that the Highland Companies own more that 5000 adjacent acres. This gravel may be for export out of Canada.

It's difficult to imagine how very, very bad this mega quarry will be. It will be a social, cultural and environmental disaster for everyone in Southern Ontario: the people, the farms, the forests, the water and the wildlife.

Please join us at Queen's Park Earth Day, April 22nd at 12 noon, or anywhere along the walk
