Under Mayor Rob Ford's austerity agenda, the city is undergoing a dramatic shift in how municipal politics are carried out, how services that sustain our city's infrastructure and neighbourhoods are delivered and, ultimately, who stands to benefit and lose in this process. Join us to discuss what's at stake, how we can mobilize in response to the austerity agenda and actively shape our city's and our communities' future.

Ride to Save the Bike Lanes

Meet at Victoria Park subway station
Help save the Pharmacy Av. and Birchmount Rd. Bike Lanes by joining us for a ride to raise awareness and to listen to what the local neighbours have to say.
Toronto City Council votes on July 13th to accept all or part of Mayor Rob Ford's Bike Plan, which calls for the removal of the bike lanes installed in 2008 on Pharmacy Ave. & Birchmount Rd..
This is a matter of personal safety for everyone who uses the roads and we will ride on Tuesday to help save the lanes.

Bamako is a searing indictment against the IMF and the World Bank. Shot documentary style with real lawyers and witnesses, culminating in a fictitious mock trial of the World Bank. The dialogue is unflinching and witnesses speak of the devastating effects that 20 years of "structural adjustment" has had on Africa. It is a devastating indictment of economic neoliberalism. Witnesses give long speeches that connect the viewer to the real lives and to the sociopolitical realities of much of African society. Bamako has potent speeches from African teachers and writers who expose the regressive and destructive nature of privatization, who point to the utter failure of an imported economic strategy, and who tell stories of suffering and struggle caused by or exacerbated by such policy. The film sets a fiery tone of anger, resistance and regeneration.

The Fair Fare Coalition, in partnership with the Greater Toronto Workers’ Assembly and DAMN 2025, is hosting a
workshop on direct action for our upcoming July 6th action for free transit on smog and heat alert days. Nonviolent
Direct Action is a key tool for making change in our communities. It can be a protest, a march, a strike or street theatre
to show public support for an issue and demand a political, economic or social change.
Come learn about:
• Common roles in a direct action
• Decision making at actions
• Basic safety considerations
• Knowing your rights
• The legal risks and consequences of taking action
This workshop is for the upcoming July demonstration to demand that Public Transit be made free on heat and smog
alert days. This is a step towards making sure that transit becomes a right for everyone who needs it!

Kick the Fossil Fuel Habit: 10 Clean Technologies to Save Our World

Tom Rand offers a comprehensive approach to issues related to our transition to a low-carbon economy. Technology options, political constraints and possibilities, policy options, financial and economic considerations and climate science are all covered to varying degrees. A main theme that is clearly differentiated: Tom believes our economy can run without fossil fuels, but he is not naive to the obstacles that remain to all things green.
During his presentation Tom is willing to ask hard questions about the technology options available to us, and the scale of investment required to move the needle on carbon emissions. Asking the provocative question "What do you get for a trillion or three dollars?" as a way to generate analysis. His principal focus and expertise is as a scientifically literate venture capitalist.

As we enter the 21st century, serious questions are beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. With brutal honesty and a touch of irony, The End of Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are upon us now, some scientists and policy makers argue in this documentary. The consequences of inaction in the face of this global crisis are enormous. What does Peak Oil mean for North America?
See the film that inspired the beginnings of the Transition Movement, with a talk by its film-maker, Greg Greene, on the film and the ability of film to change the world.

Bike Tour of Toronto Island in Support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation
come and see the Toronto Islands in a way you never have before—Toronto Island beyond Centreville!
Sunday July 3, 2 - 8 p.m. (dinner 5 - 7 p.m.)
The Toronto Island “Grannies in Spirit”, a group of Island women who fundraise on behalf of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, are partnering with the
Great Waterfront Trail Adventure (GWTA) bike ride, and offering an “insider’s” bike tour of the Island, from Hanlan’s to Ward’s, culminating with a
fabulous buffet dinner overlooking Toronto Bay and the iconic view of Toronto’s skyline.
The self-guided tour highlights numerous little known points of interest, from Hanlan’s to Ward’s, and will give you insights into the history, the geography,
and the flora and fauna that makes the Island so special. Ticket holders will be able to tour the historic Gibraltar Point Lighthouse and hear the story of the
ghost of the murdered lighthouse keeper, Radan Muller. The beautiful little 1884 St. Andrews-by-the-Lake Church, not usually open to the public, will also
be a highlight. Admire the beautiful, old, stained-glass windows and architecture of the church. Then, enjoy a swim at one of the lesser known beaches on
the Island and gain some insight into the history of the century-old, unique community.
The tour is set up so you can do as little or as much as you like. You do not need to be part of the GWTA ride to buy tickets. Finish your ride on
Algonquin Island, at the Algonquin Island Clubhouse, and enjoy a delicious Island-made dinner while sipping a cooling drink and watching the sailboats
in the Bay.
Tickets are $40 and can be pre-purchased online: http://tibiketour.eventbrite.com/. Tickets will not be available at the door. Places are limited so don’t delay!
Cash bar. Ferry tickets not included. Participants are to provide their own bikes. Map, guide, and additional information will be emailed prior to the event.
Funds raised will be donated to the Stephen Lewis Foundation to assist African grandmothers who are struggling to raise their grandchildren who have been
orphaned by AIDS.

Coordinated by Dorothy Goldin Rosenberg, PhD, MES.
In this course, environmental health is framed as a field of research, education, policy and advocacy endeavours that links the natural, health and social sciences with the worlds of the academy, community, business, economics, labour, governments and media. This framework stresses social issues in environmental health contexts of gender, race, class, culture, ethnicity, age, poverty and other systems of oppression. The course includes a module on children’s health and the environment relevant to key Canadian/North American health outcomes with epidemiological evidence of links to environmental hazards such as asthma, cancer, neuro-behavioural and developmental effects, low birth weight and birth defects.
