About Debt Trap
Never before in history have so many people been in so much debt to large corporations, and our debt load is mounting daily. The documentary,Debt Trap, examines why the average Canadian is sinking deeper in hock, by looking at the stories of several individuals and families who are struggling with debt. It looks beyond blaming individual consumers, to examine the roles of lending institutions, the corporate sector, and governments in understanding the current debt crisis and what we can do to correct it.

As the recent global debt impacts on Canadians, the questions raised by Debt Trap couldn’t be more timely. Sobering, ironic, and enlightening, the film probes the reasons why more and more of us are struggling to keep afloat, and what needs to be done to turn this trend around.

Seats are limited. To book a seat please visit: http://debttrap.eventbrite.com/

Thinking Ahead to 2014 • Taking a critical look at local elections

The Better Ballots initiative and the Canadian Urban Institute present a roundtable breakfast seminar on local electoral reform.

Thursday, July 7, 7:30 – 9:30 a.m.
Metro Hall, 55 John Street, room 308/309
Cost: members $ 32.00, non-members $ 40.00

Registration deadline is July 5th, 2011. There is no HST added to the event fee. Breakfast and registration begin at 7:30am; speaking starts at 8:00am.
Although the dust is still settling from the 2010 municipal elections, it is never too early to look ahead to 2014 – not in terms of who might be running, but rather looking at the rules around how citizens cast their votes. Voter turnout in Toronto last fall barely reached the 50% mark, suggesting that there is room for improvement. Women and minorities were also poorly represented.

Better Ballots is a non-partisan group exploring options to make municipal elections more relevant, fair and participatory. The group has put forward 14 options on voting reform, such as term limits, ranked ballots, a lower voting age, proportionality and local parties. How would these options look in Toronto? What benefits might these changes bring? What would it take to get people more engaged with municipal elections? What role does provincial regulation play in improving the ability of municipalities to innovate, and how does this fit into the larger discussion of increased powers for Ontario's towns and cities?
Join us for an open discussion of the pros and cons of local electoral reform.

Opening and Closing remarks by Alan Broadbent, Maytree

Speakers and Panelists include:
       • Rob Newman, Better Ballots campaign
       • Mary-Margaret McMahon, City Councillor, Ward 32 Beaches-East York
