Save our Bike Lanes!
Call and Email your City Councillor and Mayor Ford on Mon. July 11 (Council is voting on this on July 12/13) The Mayor's Public Hotline # is 416-397-FORD (3673) mayor_ford at toronto.ca
The Fordists wants to take away more than 10 kms of bike lanes on Jarvis, Pharmacy, Birchmount AND kill the Bloor/Danforth Environmental Assessment which has already be contracted out and work done. We can change this.

It's time Toronto cyclists stand up to defend our public safety. Together, we can win this. Here's how:

Call and E-mail your Councillor expressing your support for bike lanes and the Bloor/Danforth EA. Ask your Councillor to uphold the democratic process and reject the Ford administration's attempt to side-step democracy and community engagement. *Note: Please include your address at the end of the e-mail so your Councillor's office can confirm you are a constituent.

TO: Your Councillor (find his/her e-mail address here) CC: mayor_ford at toronto.ca,councillor_parker at toronto.ca, councillor_wongtam at toronto.ca, info at bikeunion.to

In December 2002, the Indigenous youth of Grassy Narrows began laying down in the path of industrial logging trucks, blocking their access to traditional lands and sparking what has become the longest standing blockade in Canadian History.

Produced by Dave Clement of Thunder Bay Indymedia, ‘As Long as the River Flows: The Story of the Grassy Narrows Blockade’ documents the story of the blockade and shows the struggle for environmental justice and self-determination that Grassy Narrows First Nation is a part of.

Webinar: What to do about the Asian Carp in Canada?
Tuesday, July 12, 12 – 1 p.m.

Presented by Great Lakes United.

Asian carp have invaded the United States, with silver and bighead populations well established in Mississippi River basin waters. Populations have spread north to the edge of the Lake Michigan basin (infesting Chicago area waters in Illinois), and the Lake Erie basin (infesting the Wabash River in Indiana).
An Asian carp invasion to the Great Lakes will clearly impact both U.S. and Canadian natural resources, but given the current location of the fish, prevention efforts are primarily focused in the U.S. The question isn't whether Canadians should have input into actions that, if they fail, will permanently change our shared waters. Rather, the question is, how?

Join a discussion with Mary Muter from the Sierra Club-Ontario and Hugh Wilkins from Ecojustice to discuss the risk of an Asian carp invasion in Canada, and what options Canadians have to proactively help stop the carp. Facilitator: Jennifer Nalbone, Great Lakes United
Reserve your Webinar seat now.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Lauren Cheal at lcheal at glu.org.

Lost Rivers walk: The Five Creeks

Sunday, July 17, 2 p.m.
York Civic Centre (outside), 2700 Eglinton Ave. West

This picks up a walk started years ago by Dick Watts. We'll walk along the route he devised, to some extent. Starting outside the York Civic Centre where Bicknell Ave intersects with Eglinton Ave W. The walk takes us along Black Creek and into the tributaries (the Five Creeks) which flow (or flowed) into it. We will probably walk as far as Amesbury Park, at Keele & Lawrence, and end there. Led by Richard Anderson.
Since the weather may be hot, please dress for the weather and bring some water. The TFN has a helpful checklist for what to wear and bring on a walk.

Toronto Stop the Cuts: Mass Outreach Days

Sun. July 17, 11am – 4 p.m. outreach, 4:30 meeting for Parkdale residents and workers
Meet at the Masaryk-Cowan Community Centre, 220 Cowan Ave, Parkdale

People in this City are being hit by cuts to the services their communities need. We are being hit by austerity, and we are being hit hard. $800 million dollars in cuts to the city services are planned by the Mayor for this September, and the consultation process has come and gone with the majority of residents in this city not knowing. Everything from your local community center and library, to shelters and health services are currently under review. Unless we act now, many of the valuable services that our communities depend on may be shut down over the next few months.

The Toronto Stop the Cuts Network is a group of community organizations and concerned individuals who are fighting to stop cuts to our city services. We demand: Stop the Ford cuts! Expand city services for all! No handouts to cops and corporations!

Our strength comes from people uniting to fight back. Together we can win the fight against Ford's cuts and take back our city. We are organizing in neighborhoods throughout the city to confront the cuts in the areas where we live and work. Please join us in spreading awareness about these cuts and how they will adversely affect the services in our city that you rely on.

Join our low-traffic announcements list-serv/Take the People's Poll: http://bit.ly/TorontoPeoplesPoll

No TTC Fares on Smog and Heat Alert Days!

During Extreme Heat Alerts, the City of Toronto counsels people to seek shelter and opens cooling centres across the City. People are at risk of death during these alerts -- particularly pregnant women, senior citizens, people living with disabilities and chronic illnesses and people living in substandard housing.

We need TTC to be FREE on Extreme Heat and Smog Alert Days so that people can access cooling centres and stay safe during the summer heat and smog.

Fair Fare Coalition's goals are a physically and economically accessible public transit system including:

Low income subsidized pass
Free transit during heat and cold alerts
Discount to agencies who bulk buy tokens for free distribution
These are steps toward a free transit system for all, ensuring that public transit is a right for those who need it, while reducing smog and environmental damage.

Organized by: Fair Fare Coalition; Greater Toronto Workers' Assembly - Free and Accessible Transit Campaign; Damn 2025.
