Tell Council: Environmental Programs aren't Gravy!

Tell your Councillor and the Mayor that environmental programs are 'essential' to the future of our City.

Sign our petition here

---------------------------------------
---------------------------------------

If you love the Toronto Public Library, sign the petition!

The cost cutting agenda of Toronto City Council could target the TPL within weeks. Local branches could be closed and some or all of the Library’s operations could be privatized, unless we act now. Please send a message to Mayor Ford telling him our libraries are not for sale. A copy of your message will be sent to members of the Toronto City Council Executive Committee and your own City Councilor.

The Last Mountain

July 22 – 28, 7 p.m.
Royal Theatre, 608 College St.

Fantastic documentary film! The mining and burning of coal is at the epicenter of America’s struggle to balance its energy needs with environmental concerns. Nowhere is that concern greater than in Coal River Valley, West Virginia, where a small but passionate group of ordinary citizens are trying to stop Big Coal corporations, like Massey Energy, from continuing the devastating practice of Mountain Top Removal.

Eco Pirate: The Story of Paul Watson

Friday, July 22 opens at the TIFF Bell Lightbox and plays several times daily through July 28
TIFF Bell Lightbox, 350 King St. West (King and John)
http://www.tiff.net/filmsandschedules/tiffbelllightbox/2011/201106070055230

“Eco-Pirate doesn't just take us into the personal past of a Canadian folk hero; it explores the very birth of a global movement, spawned in the heart of hippie Vancouver.”—Katherine Monk, Vancouver Sun

A hit at this year’s Hot Docs, Eco-Pirate: The Story of Paul Watson is an intimate and revealing documentary about the legendary Canadian environmentalist. As one of the chief architects of Greenpeace, Watson has long been on the forefront of environmental activism, famously pushing the organization to adopt a more radical stance by physically involving himself in protests, whether perched atop a whale or confiscating the clubs of seal hunters. His controversial departure from Greenpeace led to his founding of the Sea Shepherd Society, which aggressively pursues ships hunting whales illegally. Blending revealing and intimate interviews with shocking frontline footage, director Trish Dolman has crafted a compelling portrait of modern activism.

Sorting Out the Confusion: An In-Depth Look at Breast Cancer Screening - Webinar on Mammograms

Featuring: Tracy Weitz, BCAction Board Chair and Director, Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH), University of California, San Francisco

For your convenience, we're offering the webinar twice:
Tuesday, July 26, 5:00 - 6:00 PM (Pacific Daylight Time) Click here to register for the 7/26 webinar! and
Thursday, July 28, 10:00AM - 11:00AM (Pacific Daylight Time) Click here to register for 7/28 webinar!
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

When the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) announced new recommendations for mammography screening in 2009, the ensuing media frenzy generated a lot of heated conversation. In the midst of that debate, BCAction was one of the few breast cancer organizations to acknowledge mammography s limitations and call for safer, more effective screening methods. With related studies and legislation currently in the news, we think that it s a good time to offer a webinar with our comprehensive analysis of screening mammography. This webinar will delineate the risks and benefits of breast cancer screening, review the science behind the USPSTF s recommendations, and provide attendees with tools for understanding media coverage of mammography. Join us for an illuminating look at a complex and often confusing issue.

The Bridge: A Frank Discussion On the Current Funding Climate

Wednesday, July 27 · 7 p.m. dinner and talk
Toronto Free Gallery, 1277 Bloor St. West

A dinner & talk with Roy Mitchell, Michael Rubenfeld, and Jason St-Laurent, moderated by Florencia Berinstein.

$15/person for dinner (vegan) & talk (meaty)
Seats are limited. Please contact amber at torontofreegallery.org to reserve your spot.

Recently Toronto Summerworks Theatre Festival received funding cuts totaling around $50 000. There is a suspected link between the timing of the cut and last year’s presentation of Homegrown, a play focused on the Toronto 18. Toronto’s Pride Parade was also threatened with funding cuts because of the presence of signs protesting a human rights violation. With recent changes in federal and municipal governments, the reaction to these two events seems to foreshadow a worrisome shift in the funding climate.

This month’s Bridge invites you to participate in a constructive conversation about these recent events, asking how do we handle the pressure we may be feeling to self-censor to hold on to our funding? How as individuals and organizations can we support each other more strongly when one of us is under threat? And what responses are currently being organized around these issues?

Direct Action and Civil Disobedience: Campaigning to Stop the Quarry

Training sessions at Unicamp - July 31 – Aug 1

Direct action has played an integral role in most movements for social change, from the civil rights era to the suffragettes, and from forest defense to worker justice movements and protection of farmland and water sources.

This workshop is for people who are newer to direct action and civil disobedience, and are interested in learning about different kinds of direct action, as well as the basics of when, why and how to strategically integrate direct action into your campaign. Time will be provided for groups to plan and role play their own actions.

There will be 3 sessions: Sunday afternoon, Sunday evening, and Monday morning. Each session will be about 2 hours, with the option of extending the time for questions and strategizing.

Participants are encouraged to attend all 3 sessions in order to gain the greatest benefit, but if you can only make it to one session, you’ll still find it to be of great value.

Fees will depend on the number of participants – probably about $10 for one session or $25 for all 3. Sliding scale may be available if we have sufficient registration.

This training is suitable for about age 14 and up. Children may observe from the edges while their parents are participating.

Jessica Bell is a trainer with the Ruckus Society, a lecturer on advocacy at Ryerson University, and the co-founder of Tools for Change, a program that provides skills-based training for groups in Toronto.

Register in advance to secure your place: email Kate Chung <katechung17 at gmail.com before 5 p.m. July 28. From July 29, find Kate at Unicamp.

If you need accommodation and/or meals at camp, please contact: Unicamp Administrative Manager, Wanda Gordon 519-822-6353
