Residents from across the city are rallying for Toronto. Our message to City Hall is: build Toronto, don’t destroy it. Together,
we can stop the cuts, closures, privatization and user fees that will have an impact on every neighbourhood in Toronto.
What’s at stake?
- Services and programs that serve every resident and community, such as libraries, child care and recreation centres
- Good jobs that strengthen our communities
- TTC connecting all our neighbourhoods
- Environmental leadership for the future of our city
- Keeping public control of public services
- Safeguarding vital public assets such as housing and Toronto Hydro
Why September 26? On September 26, City Council will meet to discuss the Core Service Review and the 2012 budget.
Hundreds of Torontonians will gather in Council Chambers that day as major decisions are made at City Hall. These decisions
will affect our entire city and its future.
Isn’t the city broke? How can we afford to keep everything? We are the only municipality in the GTA that froze property
taxes in 2011. Other municipalities also get funding from provincial and federal governments to off set costs of their services.
Our Mayor has said that he will not lobby the other levels of government for new funding. Meanwhile, an exaggerated deficit
financial figure -- $774 million -- is being used to justify drastic cost-cutting and privatization. The real agenda is to shrink city
services. Many of these services are revenue generators and the financial benefits have not been properly considered in the city’s
budget.
I’m coming to the rally. What else can I do to support? You can call or email your Councillor and ask them to support public
services and good jobs in Toronto. Call 311 to get in touch with your Councillor. Encourage your friends and neighbours in
Toronto to also contact their Councillor.

In the summer of 1995, the Conservative Ontario government of Mike Harris launched a vicious attack on poor and working people in Ontario. Citing the need for deficit reduction, Harris slashed welfare rates, cut taxes, closed hospitals, cut education spending, and repealed labour laws. Sixteen years later, with the looming possibility of a Harris-Ford-Hudak trifecta, we find ourselves in a similar position. Let’s learn from the past.
What were the Harris Days of Action? What worked? What didn’t? How can these lessons help us organize more effectively both on- and off-campus in today’s ‘Age of Austerity’?

The mining and burning of coal is at the epicenter of America’s struggle to balance its energy needs with environmental concerns. Nowhere is that concern greater than in Coal River Valley, West Virginia, where a small but passionate group of citizens is trying to stop Big Coal corporations, like Massey Energy, from continuing the devastating practice of Mountain Top Removal. Ontario buys coal from Central Appalachia, and that likely means mountain top removal. But we don’t need to burn coal to meet our electricity needs. In fact, Ontario subsidizes OPG to burn coal for export.

Stop the Quarry - Ontarians Protest the Destruction of Agricultural Land and Fresh Water
Friday, September 30, 12 – 2 p.m.

Join fellow Ontarians for a peaceful gathering to oppose the proposed mega quarry in Melancthon Township, just north of Shelburne.
The +2,300 acre proposed mega quarry, if approved by the government, would be the second largest limestone quarry in North America and would see the destruction of prime agricultural land (of which only 0.5% of Canada's land area is rated) as well as the extraction of aggregate from below the water table. The proposed mega quarry would be 1.5 times as deep as Niagara Falls, and would require the management of 600,000,000 litres of fresh water a day in perpetuity/FOREVER (at a cost to Ontario's tax payers). Furthermore, the proposal would see the destruction of wildlife habitat including the endangered Bobolink and Henslow's Sparrow, and an additional 7,200 dangerous gravel trucks a day added to our roads.
Ontarians need to speak now, and to have their collective will expressed to politicians in power. We will not stand for the destruction of our farmland, the poisoning of our water and air, the jeopardization of safety on our roads, the elimination of the rich cultural fabric of our rural communities and an uncertain future for our children and grandchildren.

Filmed in 1971 in the midst of joint anti-imperialist military actions carried out by the Japanese Red Army and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Declaration of World War is an experimental revolutionary film essay that serves as a record of the communist and anti-imperialist global struggles of the 1960s and 1970s. Artist and curator Vicky Moufawad-Paul will introduce the film.
Since this is a fundraiser to support the daily functioning of the PRAC and the Revolutionary Student Movement (such as send money to help with the production of the Partisan that is distributed for free as well as organizing multi-city conferences), the suggested donation for attending this event is $10-$20. At the same time, no one will be turned away due to lack of funds.

Last year, over 150 migrant workers and their allies made history by marching over 50 Km, an equivalent of 12 hours, from Leamington to Windsor, Ontario demanding justice, respect and dignity for the hundreds of thousands employed under the auspices of Canada's Temporary Foreign Worker Programs. Over the last year, thousands of people have heard the testimonies and the stories that led to organizing the march. Demands for permanent residency and citizenship status, an end to repatriations and deportations, labour law reform, equal access to social entitlements and an end to the coercive role of recruiters and contractors has inspired many others about the realities faced by migrant workers in Canada.
Migrant workers and members of Justicia for Migrant Workers have continued to organize in rural Ontario and are once again demanding that the chains of indentureship in Canada be broken! This year the pilgrimage continues as a form of a caravan across rural Ontario. Migrant workers and their allies will be recreating the stops of the underground railroad to pay tribute to the important struggles of resistance that we base our struggle upon. On September 4th, 2011 we visited St. Catharines, Virgil, NOTL, and Niagara Falls during the first stage of the Pilgrimage to Freedom, and it was a very successful and touching day.
