A Common Word, That We May Know Each Other

This workshop introduces two major documents in the world of interfaith relations. "A Common Word Between Us and You" was produced by 138 leading Muslim scholars and presented at a conference held by the Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute in Jordan in 2007.  "That We May Know Each Other" was produced by the United Church of Canada in 2004 and describes its vision of United Church-Muslim Relations today.

Who We Are:  Rhythms of Resistance Toronto is a political samba band that plays for environmental and social justice. We oppose all forms of oppression and use music to demonstrate our opposition and show solidarity with struggles for justice. We are a non-hierarchical collective that is queer positive, anti-colonial, feminist, anti-capitalist, against racism and ableism. We believe everyone is musical.  Using samba for social change and through our community norms we create the world we want to see.

The Cuban Council of State passed a decree-law declaring October 6 as the "Day of the Victims of State Terrorism" resulting from the terrorist attack on flight CU-455 on October 6th, 1976: At 11:21 a.m. flight CU-455, a DC-8 of the Cuban airline, reached the Seawell InternationalAirport. At 12:15 p.m. the plane left for Jamaica. In mid-flight it is shaken by two explosions: one at 12:23 p.m. and the other at 12:25 p.m. until it crashes into the sea. 73 people were traveling on the aircraft, amongst which was the Cuban junior fencing team.There were no survivors. 57 Cubans, 11 Guyanese and 5 North Koreans. 34 years after the tragic event:  CUBA DEMANDS JUSTICE

Media Strategy Workshop 101

University of Toronto St George Campus (Room location is given upon registration.)

Campaigns interact, influence, and are influenced by the media. This workshop will provide participants with tools to develop a media strategy, write compelling press releases, give great interviews, and develop frames and messages that are in line with their goals.
 
Trainers: Syed Hussan is a writer and organizer with migrant justice movements in Toronto. He was involved with media and communications for the anti-G20 mobilizations in 2010.  Justin Podur is a reporter, writer and editor. His writing can be found at Rabble.ca, Znet, and on his blog, killingtrain.com.

Suggested donation: organizations and wage earners: $20; unwaged: $10. No one turned away for lack of funds.  Proceeds go to running the Tools for Change program, including honorariums for trainers.

PeaceWorks offers a certificate course in Active Peacebuilding.  The first of the series is called Communication in Action, and will cover: listening skills,  raising a concern,  team building,  introduction to mediation and basic facilitation skills. The fee is $150 and a $25 deposit will hold your spot.  There are some sliding scale spaces, please inquire.  Sessions are from 6:30 to 9:30 pm at the Friends House, 60 Lowther Ave.  (1 block north of St. George subway station, Bedford exit).
