Why Should I Care?
Canada Abroad: Does Economic Growth Risk Academic Freedom?

Monday, July 16, 7:30 p.m.
Duke of York pub, 39 Prince Arthur Avenue
Registration: http://whyshouldicare.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=49814f037bc23c56222deca06&id=f57d2fca81&e=ae6e1d893c

Firms such as Barrick Gold now support research at leading edge institutions like the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs. This money is needed, but some people are concerned that corporate interests might trump academic freedoms. Will researchers be free to study human rights, abuses, and welfare of the developing nations these businesses operate in? Does corporate altruism result in greater public contributions or more corporate control? Canadian businesses are expanding across the globe, causing many to rejoice over the economic developments this heralds both locally and globally. However, what responsibilities do Canadians have for ensuring the welfare of fellow global citizens?

On July 16, WSIC welcomes Shanaaz Gokool and Freddy Osor from Amnesty International. They will lead a discussion about Canadian business practices, corporate collaboration and what that means for global human rights. They will also take questions from the floor.

Community Meeting to Save the School House Shelter!

Tuesday, July 17th, 6pm
Parliament Street Library (Gerrard and Parliament)

On June 26, we organized a mass delegation to the the Community Development and Recreation Committee of City Council. The room was filled with homeless people, allies and a range of people spoke against the City`s plan to close the 55 bed harm reduction focused School House Shelter. The Committee heard powerful testimony from those who are forced to rely on the shelter system, front line advocates, union locals representing workers in the neighborhood, and social agencies. It was pointed out by several speakers that this meeting was happening in the same month that conditions in Seaton House men`s shelter led to a violent outburst in which a man was beaten severely with a fire extinguisher, while another homeless man was found dead on Parliament Street. Despite this, the committee voted to proceed with shutting the School House down.

This fight doesn't end here. Everything now depends on a community based mobilization in the downtown east and beyond to save the School House.
This shelter has to become the place where we draw a line. We must demand that the 35 beds that have already been lost at the School House be replaced immediately. We can`t let this shelter sit empty with a padlock on its door while people die on the streets. We must organize to take back the School House and take forward the struggle in this City for the right to decent and affordable housing. Join us for a public community meeting on Tuesday, July 17th to talk about what we all want to do next to save the School House and fight for what poor people need and deserve in this neighborhood!

National Day of Action for a 2014 Health Accord

Wednesday, July 18, 11:45 a.m.
Across from the Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church (corner of Bain and Broadview Ave)

In December 2011, the federal government announced that it would cut $31 billion from public health care by 2024 effectively downloading much of the responsibility for health care onto the provinces and territories. After that announcement, the federal government walked away from the 2014 Health Accord negotiating table. Without a 2014 Health Accord, it is unlikely that we will be able to protect, strengthen, and extend public health care. Canadians need to act now to protect public health care by demanding that Harper return to the negotiating table. Otherwise, it will be every province for itself and many of us simply can’t afford it. Come partake in a human formation – we will be forming a giant red umbrella for Medicare (we’re covered)

We need 80 people to join us to form a human sculpture. We are ten people short - can you, your family, friends, colleagues, anyone(!) come out at 11:40 am for about an hour in Riverdale Park East. We will be forming a giant red umbrella to symbolize Medicare and a giant question mark to draw attention to the fact that Prime Minister Harper has walked away from negotiations about the future of Medicare in Canada. Please call or email us if you can come at 416-441-2502 - ohc at sympatico.ca. We will get back to you with more details on Monday if you are coming.

Sat. July 21, 9 p.m.
Sun. July 22, 6:30 p.m.
Mon. July 23, 9 p.m.
Bloor Cinema (Bloor east of Bathurst)

As energy exploration, excavation and export remain Canada’s economic backbone, contradictions and debates abound on the risks and rewards of development. Director Charles Wilkinson asks a sensible question: What price are we willing to pay for our consumption? And he seeks a comprehensive answer that involves all sides of four major energy projects on the Peace River that will forever alter the landscape of Northwestern Canada. Hydroelectric damming, natural gas fracturing, nuclear reactors and the oil sands present diverse perils and benefits. What is the best path? Peace Out skillfully avoids polemical experts and activists, giving voice to those dedicated to research and reason, making this a vital film amidst the cacophony of opinions polluting headlines.

Justice for Levi - Hip-hop benefit to fight Police Impunity

Sun. July 22, 9 p.m. - 1 a.m.
Detour Bar, 193 Baldwin (Kensington Market)

Levi Schaeffer was killed on June 24th, 2009 at age 30. An OPP officer shot him in the chest, only a few minutes after they had first encountered on the shore of Osnaburgh Lake near the town of Pickle Lake, Ontario. Last fall, Levi's family, along with the family of Douglas Minty who was also shot by police last June- asked a Superior Court judge to put an end to the long standing practice of lawyer vetting. After a unanimous decision in favour of the families in Ontario's highest court, the OPP appealed the case to the Supreme Court. Now, the families and their lawyers must re-present the case in Canada's highest court, and need to raise funds to fight this battle.

Remembering the Dead, Standing up for the Living
March and Vigil to Commemorate the Hampstead Accident

Sunday July 22, 2012
Get on the Bus From Toronto: http://bit.ly/NaId3E

Six months have passed since the tragic accident that killed eleven people near Hampstead, Ontario. Amongst the dead were 9 migrant chicken catchers from Peru. The impact of this accident has been felt across the hemisphere as families struggle to cope in the wake of this accident. Working with the survivors of the accident, the march and vigil is being organized to raise awareness of the thousands of migrant workers who have been injured or become sick while working in Canada.

The survivors of the crash, Javier and Juan, wish to break the invisibility not only of their situation but to raise the profile of the conditions faced by migrant workers across Canada. Their message is clear: Federal and Provincial laws designed to protect migrant workers don’t work! Fundamental steps need to be taken to ensure that migrant workers are treated with respect and dignity. Our demands are as follows:
* Safe working conditions
* Status upon arrival
* No fees for work
* Equal access to all entitlements
* Modernize labour laws to reflect the realities of migrant workers
* No repatriations and deportations

Ontario Student Strike Training Camp

Fri. July 27, 7 p.m. – Sun. July 29
U of T

Please fill out the online registration form here: http://www.utgsu.ca/stuorgtrain/
- and spread the word to any other students who you think will be interested!

On the weekend of July 28 - 29th, several student organizers from Quebec will be coming to the University of Toronto to train the crew of Ontario student organizers who will be (direct) democratizing their campuses and mobilizing towards a student strike. Whether you are an experienced organizer or new to the scene, whether you're on the executive of a union, in the good ol' fashioned rank-and-file, or organize outside of union formations, you are welcome to come to this weekend training camp. All we ask is that you are committed to organizing towards a student strike in a directly democratic, bottom-up, and anti-authoritarian fashion; that you are willing to spread the skills that you learn at these workshops to others in your cities and on your campus; and that you are open to learning new organizing strategies from people who have been on the front-line of the student struggle in Quebec.

Some workshop topics include: introduction to student strikes, communication and mobilization, mobilizing graduate students, from mobilization committees to strike committees, creating and facilitating general assemblies, creating and/or radicalizing student associations, enforcing strikes, graduate student strikes, using strikes to build a movement, and direct democracy. There will be time for plenary discussions, strategy sessions and break-out groups.
