Workers and friends are invited to join us as we reflect on our loss and ready ourselves for the future. Please wear appropriate funeral attire. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to an organization, of your choice, that defends workers or quality public education.

Resist Islamaphobia – Bring Omar Khadr Home!

Tues. Sept. 11, 6 – 9 p.m.
720 Kennedy Road

On September 11th, the Jewish Defense League is going to Omar Khadr's family residence in Scarborough to stir up Islamophobic hatred. But when they get there, they'll find community members - Christians, Hindus, Muslims, Jews, and people of all persuasions united to take a stand against Islamophobia. We will not accept the escalating racism and Islamophobia in our communities! Instead, we will establish a Hate-Free Zone. We will declare that Islamophobia Is Not Welcome Here! Omar Khadr IS Welcome Here! We will peacefully protest to call for Omar's return to Canada, an end to Guantanamo Bay, an end to the wars, and an end to the hate-mongering that attempts to divide our communities.

***Note: this is a //peaceful// protest in front of the Khadr's family residence. If you cannot commit to respecting the tone set by the organizers, please do not attend.***

Wellesley - Hoskin Bikeway Upgrades Public Consultation Process

Tuesday September 11, 4:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Seeley Hall - Trinity College, 6 Hoskin Avenue , U of T

Staff have compiled the input received at the first June 27, 2012 Public Event, and from input received over the summer. Three key trends have been suggested from the feedback received so far:
	• The majority of respondents are positive about improvements to the bicycle lanes to increase safety for cyclists.
	• Some residents are concerned about the potential negative motor vehicle traffic impacts which may result from the removal of all left turn lanes from Wellesley St.
	• So far, few concerns about the removal of on-street parking have been expressed; staff continue to investigate loading and delivery concerns.
	• Park users and cyclists would prefer a dedicated on-street cycling facility around Queens Park, to avoid conflicts which may result from heavy cycling traffic mixing with pedestrians using the Queens Park Multi-Use Path.

An evening of celebration and action for the survival of Indigenous Peoples
Photo Exhibit, Music, and Speakers

Thursday, September 13, 6 - 9 pm - drop in any time
Amnesty International, 1992 Yonge Street, 3rd floor (two blocks north of the Davisville subway stop)

September 13th marks five years since the United Nations adopted the landmark Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), a hard won battle to achieve protection for vulnerable Indigenous communities around the world. In far too many countries, including Canada, Indigenous people are still waiting for the rights enshrined in UNDRIP to be upheld. The situation in Colombia is nothing less than a human rights emergency, with more than a third of Indigenous Peoples in danger of disappearance as a result of violence and displacement linked to a vicious armed conflict and the imposition of resource extraction projects in their territory. Join us on September 13th for the launch of a stunning collection of photos commissioned by AI Canada entitled: "This is what we want to tell you! Photo messages from Indigenous People at risk of disappearance in Columbia". The beautiful images feature women and men who were invited to write and hold up a message to Canadians about the realities they face. Come be moved and inspired by this photo exhibit. Our event will also include a speaker from Colombia, music, refreshments and opportunities to take action for Indigenous rights in Colombia, Canada and other emblematic cases.

Hearing Voices Day

Fri. Sept. 14, 1 - 4:30 p.m.
Friends House, 60 Lowther (St. George subway)

Just because a person hears voices does not necessarily mean they are ill. Many of us hear voices and experience tricky stuff that others may find difficult to understand. Come help celebrate 25 years of the Hearing Voices movement, working to help voice hearers, carers and workers emancipate themselves. This is the first time Toronto has taken part in the day. We have an intensive training opportunity for workers in the morning and an all-welcome community information showcase and celebration in the afternoon; and we'll be linking with other hearing voices communities throughout.

Tour de Greenbelt – Hike, Run or Ride

What began as a fresh air festival on wheels is now a fresh air festival on wheels or foot that allows you, along with your friends and family, to enjoy an at-your-own-pace marshaled bike ride, run, or guided hike through Rouge Park, a gem of Ontario's Greenbelt. Conveniently located close to downtown Toronto this year's tour offers visually stunning routes, numerous fun and interesting stops along the way, which could include spotting ducks and frogs at a newly created wetland, cycling through Bob Hunter Memorial Park (which celebrates a Canadian environmental hero), stops for some freshly baked pie, and maybe even a detour to pick up some delicious local corn to take home. PR-101: A crash course in Proportional Representation

Sat. September 15, 7 p.m.
Centre for Social Innovation, 215 Spadina Ave. (North of Queen)

This event is being organized by the local chapter of Fair Vote Canada as part of Democracy Day. We'll explore the flaws of our current voting system, and introduce you to various forms of Proportional Representation. PR is the most common electoral system in the world, because it guarantees that all votes count, and that all voices are heard. We'll look at models including Regional List, Mixed Member Proportional, and the Single Transferable Vote. We'll also give you insight on how politicians adapt to a PR system. If you want to become an advocate for democratic renewal, this is the place to start.
