Since Toronto Mayor Rob Ford took office, communities have organized to resist his agenda of deep cuts to social services, layoffs of public sector workers and attacks on the poorest people and communities in this city. While many of the proposed cuts were averted at the budget vote in January, the battle with city hall is not over. This workshop will explore how people organized to stop the cuts, what services are still on the chopping block, and how we can continue to fight back. This workshop will also discuss current campaigns within the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty and the Downtown East Stop the Cuts Committee, including the Save the Schoolhouse shelter campaign.

Many Canadians consider Omar Khadr’s treatment by American and Canadian authorities to be immoral, and even illegal. But few understand the legal precedent set by his plight. Canadian officials not only helped violate Khadr’s Charter rights; they made it possible for those violations to be made against any of us. Canadian law has changed significantly since 9/11, making the average citizen far more vulnerable to abuses of power than before. Why Should I Care welcomes guest speaker, Dr. Barbara J. Falk, to discuss this important issue. Falk, an instructor at the Canadian Forces College, has not only written on the Khadr case—she’s also taught some of the most powerful figures in the Canadian military, too. Following her prepared remarks, Dr. Falk will take questions from the audience. You can participate if you wish, or just listen and share a pint with good company.

Cross Canada Speaking Tour on the Quebec Student Movement

An in-depth look at why radical politics in Quebec have taken the shape of a rank and file, direct action based movement capable of posing a very real threat to the state and its capitalist proponents. This event will look at “combative unionism” and the strategies it uses to fight legislation, repression and general anti-union approaches put forward against the struggle. Also, the tour will discuss an anarchist analysis of the struggle and why anarchists are involved as a whole. This speaking tour will also serve the purpose of demystifying fetishisms of Quebec political culture as inherently combative by showing that the roots of successful struggle lies in organizing along directly democratic lines, and building combativeness, and solidarity.

It’s a frightening premise, and it’s happening right now. A Sea Change follows the journey of retired history teacher Sven Huseby on his quest to discover what is happening to the world’s oceans. After reading Elizabeth Kolbert’s “The Darkening Sea,” Sven becomes obsessed with the rising acidity of the oceans and what this “sea change” bodes for mankind. His quest takes him to Alaska, California, Washington, and Norway as he uncovers a worldwide crisis that most people are unaware of. Speaking with oceanographers, marine biologists, climatologists, and artists, Sven discovers that global warming is only half the story of the environmental catastrophe that awaits us. Excess carbon dioxide is dissolving in our oceans, changing sea water chemistry. The more acidic water makes it difficult for tiny creatures at the bottom of the food web to form their shells. The effects could work their way up to the fish 1 billion people depend upon for their source of protein.

Project Censored Award winner Jeb Sprague will be in town to discuss his new book Paramilitarism And the Assault On Democracy In Haiti, published by Monthly Review Press. In this path-breaking book, Jeb Sprague investigates the dangerous world of right-wing paramilitarism in Haiti and its role in undermining the democratic aspirations of the Haitian people. Sprague focuses on the period beginning in 1990 with the rise of Haiti’s first democratically elected president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, and the right-wing movements that succeeded in driving him from power. Over the ensuing two decades, paramilitary violence was largely directed against the poor and supporters of Aristide’s Lavalas movement, taking the lives of thousands of Haitians. Sprague seeks to understand how this occurred, and traces connections between paramilitaries and their elite financial and political backers, in Haiti but also in the United States and the Dominican Republic.

The Greenhouse Effect and Planet Earth - (Env. Minister) Peter Kent Film from 1984!

A tongue-in-cheek tribute to Minister of the Environment Peter Kent – we will be screening the 30 minute, 1984 documentary “The Greenhouse Effect and Planet Earth” (written, hosted, and narrated by Kent) which explains the science behind climate change and states in no uncertain terms that “the greenhouse effect must be considered as the world’s greatest environmental concern.” Since making the move from journalism to politics, Kent has abandoned any semblance of environmentalism: in December 2011 he formally withdrew Canada from the Kyoto Protocol, he used the 2012 Omnibus Budget Bill C-38 to eliminate funding for energy efficiency programs and drastically limit environmental assessments for industrial projects, and he has supported tar sands development at every turn, pushing to maintain the $1.4 billion in subsidies the Canadian government gives to fossil fuel corporations annually. The film will be followed by a speaker - University of Toronto Professor Matthew Hoffmann - who will talk a bit about the current state of the climate and what we, as concerned citizens, can do about it.

Almost 14 years ago, the Cuban Five – René González, Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labañino and Fernando González– were falsely charged and wrongly convicted in a Miami courtroom of "conspiracy to commit espionage" against the U.S. On behalf of the Cuban government. Ever since the unjust conviction, the five Cubans have been held in separate U.S. prisons, often in solitary confinement. In fact, the politically-motivated trial and conviction of the Cuban five had nothing to do with threats to U.S. security. They were on a mission to monitor and report on violent groups in Miami that are well known by the U.S. government to be responsible for terrorist acts against the Cuban people. The campaign of bombings, assassinations and other attacks has left 3,478 Cubans dead and 2,099 seriously injured. The Cuban Five were peacefully trying to do what U.S. law enforcement authorities have refused to do - prevent terrorism. As part of an unprecedented international effort to achieve the freedom of the Cuban Five, a Peoples' Tribunal & Assembly is being convoked in Toronto. The Peoples' Tribunal & Assembly aims to act as a forum for education and for launching an appeal to get justice for the Cuban Five, to break the silence of the mainstream media about this case; and to map out the next steps of a broad and united campaign on the Cuban Five in Québec and across the rest of Canada.

From Silence to Attention - A Non-Violent Direct Action Workshop

First Unitarian Congregation, 175 St Clair Ave West, at Avenue Rd.
Do you have an issue that is near and dear to your heart? Are you keen to make a difference - but not sure what to do? Are you looking for ways to garner media attention for your side of the story? This interactive, dynamic and fun workshop, offers proven and practical strategies for getting heard. You will develop the theoretical and practical skills you need to determine when and how to use non-violent direct action to achieve your goals. Specific topics that we will cover include: types of direct action, how to ensure your action is strategic and effective, designing actions, action roles and responsibilities, and dealing with issues that arise during the action itself, such as addressing conflict and negotiating with people with different ideologies and approaches to action.
Facilitator: Jessica Bell, M. Ed., works as a facilitator and social movement trainer. She is the co-founder of Toronto training organization, Tools for Change, and a trainer with the Ruckus Society. Jessica teaches advocacy in the Non-profit and Voluntary Sector Management Program at Ryerson University.

Windfest is Toronto’s largest kite festival! From expert kite fliers, to kids flying their first kite, there is a space for everyone at WindFest. Kite flying is a fun, safe, creative and multi-cultural activity that anyone can enjoy! We’ll have workshops on how to make kites, and how to fly kites too! There are two well-established communities who love the wind: The Green Energy sector, and kite fliers! WindFest is the first major event that brings these two themes together in a combined celebration of wind power. Whether we’re using wind to spin turbines or to lift beautiful kites off the ground, we’re reminded of the enormous potential of wind energy and the powerful forces of nature that surround us.

Introduction to Permaculture Workshop

Permaculture is the conscious design of ecosystems that mimic the diversity, stability and resilience of natural ecosystems. We ask and observe, what would nature do? This hands-on workshop introduces permaculture design theory and ways to apply it in your home or community garden. Topics: organic gardening basics; permaculture design and practices; working with water; plant guilds (plants that grow well together, help soil tilth and support the larger ecosystem); dynamic accumulators (plants that accumulate nutrients & feed the soil); plants and plant selection; starting new gardens and soil building; putting garden to bed; cover crops & mulches; composting; humans and other animals; working less for more; diversity gardening.

Toronto Free'scool Fall Workshop Series
On Saturdays September 22 and 29, at Scadding Court Community Centre (Dundas and Bathurst), Free’scool will be running a workshop series. The series is designed to enhance people’s personable skills that will enable them to teach, organize, and interact peacefully, democratically, and with mutual respect and accountability. Democratic, community-based education is a largely new concept for a lot of people, and while there are a lot of people who want to teach and organize within it, they don’t necessarily know what that kind of education looks like in practice, because they’ve never experienced it. This series is for those interested in teaching, but unsure about how to do so in popular/democratic education settings; teachers who have begun to teach at free’scool and want to further develop their teaching skills; and for organizers, educators, and community members from all areas who want to develop their democratic facilitation skills.

Remembering Partition 1947: Dialogue for Healing and Change

In 1947, with the independence of India and Pakistan, over a million people were killed, more than 12 million were forced to migrate, and 75000 women were abducted. To commemorate the 65th anniversary of the partition of India and Pakistan, and to celebrate International Day of Peace 2012, InterChange GTA is hosting a dialogue focused on shared understanding, healing and change. It will be a welcoming, inclusive event where people can tell their stories; share their experiences; and seek to understand others. During the event, we'll ask ourselves: 1. What made it possible for people to kill their own neighbours? 2. How do the events of 1947 continue to affect people? 3. How can we move toward healing and reconciliation?
