Investing in Repression in Honduras and Guatemala
A talk by Grahame Russell of Rights Action: eyewitness account

Monday September 24, 7 pm
OISE 2214

There is no end in sight to violence and repression in Honduras. There is no end in sight to the impunity and corruption with which the powerful economic, military and political sectors act. There is also no end in sight to American and Canadian governments and businesses maintaining political, economic and military relations with the Honduras, empowering and legitimizing the regime. American and Canadian businesses and investors are, in effect, benefiting from the repression, violence, corruption and impunity. How Canada helped make Honduras the violence and impunity capital of the world.

Trans Film Screening Series presents:
Against A Trans Narrative

Monday, 24 September, 6:30 pm
William Doo Auditorium, 45 Willcocks st.
Free Film! Free Snacks! Free Talk! Prizes! Everyone welcome. Allies welcome.

Against A Trans Narrative: A resonating film for anyone who has ever struggled to reconcile their identity with the communities they belong to. Gender-bending and genre-blending the film uses diary footage, stylized dramatic scenes, spoken word, faux audition tapes, and roundtables to initiate a dialogue between feminists, queers, transfolk and friends about the way we construct personal and historical narratives. What does it mean to be trans? Is there an idealized perception of trans-masculine identity? What is the diversity of the trans-masculine experience? Is there an "idealized" community narrative? Complicating the connections around identity formation and representation - the film is one entry point into a larger conversation.

The state of labour, past and present.

Wednesday, September 26, 8 - 11 p.m.
Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen Street West (near Dufferin)

Ever wonder how we got the weekend, vacation pay, workman’s compensation and many other things that we take for granted? These were the hard one spoils of the labour movement. The "Voice of Industry", an early labor newspaper published by the first union for working women in the United States, was an early emblem of that movement. And we’re reviving the conversations that took place in its pages. The Voice of Industry was a weekly American labour newspaper that ran from 1845-1848, published by the first union of working women in the U.S. In its pages, working women published articles and poetry about a range of issues related to the social changes wrought by the Industrial Revolution. While their world was very different from our own, much of their criticism remains as powerful and relevant today as it was over a hundred years ago. In 2008 the paper was recovered in its entirety and made freely available online. This year, a substantial redesign of the site was undertaken, with a view of making the sentiments, criticism and moral vision of these workers accessible to a broader audience. To celebrate the redesign, we will be holding an evening of speakers and performances on September 26th at the Gladstone Hotel.

SPEAKERS:
* Jim Stanford - Chief Economist, Canadian Auto Workers Union
* Bryan Palmer - Professor of Labour History, Trent University
* Fay Farady - Labour, Human Rights and Constitutional Lawyer

PERFORMANCES:
* Sean Morley Dixon
* the Voice of Industry Choir
* and others.

#1000mayors

Thur. Sept. 27, 7:30 p.m.
Toronto City Hall, Committee Room 2 (second floor)

If you're like me, you're getting tired of the Ford and media sideshow, and lack of a mayoral agenda to reach the potential of our City. We don't need to wait until the next election (or court decision) to start discussing and implementing proposals to build a better Toronto. We can work together as residents with city councillors and staff to design proposals that can get moving within the next two months to two years.

#1000mayors will be simple - you be the mayor and propose an agenda. Attendees are invited to write down a proposal for the City of Toronto that creates a more equitable, sustainable City (good jobs? stronger community? enhanced culture? more housing?) No limits, think big and doable. New ideas as the new Council term begin, or old ones that just haven't happened yet. Write it on a piece of paper to be placed on the wall, and have a minute or two to speak on it. Everyone else - look around the room and sticker proposals you like the most, and write your e-mail down where you want to work together to make it happen. Chat with others at #1000mayors about the ideas, with friends and groups beforehand, and converse here and with #1000mayors. Great opportunity for those new to City Hall to those who have been to depute.

A People’s History of the War of 1812
Fundraiser evening with John Bell

Saturday September 29th, 5:30 pm Dinner • 7 pm Talk
Oak Street Co-op Community Room (Directions: take River Street north from Dundas or south from Gerrard St. E., walk east on Oak St. and look for stairs and a ramp on the right side, just past the convenience store. Community Room at bottom of stairs)
Suggested donation $7-15 (sliding scale)

Stephen Harper has devoted at least $28 million to glorifying the War of 1812, as part of his ongoing campaign to "rebrand" Canada as a "warrior nation". There is a lot to remember and celebrate from this history, but it sure isn't what Harper wants us to know about: corruption, incompetence and greed among the rulers on both sides of the border; and a powerful urge to resist war by working people in the Canadas and in the battleground states.
