The World

☢ <http://bit.ly/S8wJzC> The Fukushima nuclear catastrophe was “a profoundly man-made disaster” despite being triggered by the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The special investigation concluded that the on-going nuclear disaster was the result of “willful negligence” and the collusion between an entrenched bureaucracy of government, a “captured regulator” and the nuclear industry “to put their organizational interests ahead of their paramount duty to protect public safety.”

☢ <http://bit.ly/TbND2W> Is Food Irradiation the answer to reducing risk of illness from E. coli ? CBC’s The Current interview. The nuclear industry is back at it, pushing for use of cobalt 60 to irradiate food. The opponent’s concerns include: doses (20-30 million times higher than a chest x-ray); nuclear facilities across the country that are 1000-10,000 times larger than hospital medical facilities; cobalt 60 transport across the country; nuclear waste; super-charged ions in the food; some food risks but difficult to measure. She got much less time to speak than the pro-irradiation advocate.

☢ <http://bit.ly/SvRcil> NB Power denies missing 5th Point Lepreau restart date Point Lepreau missed its fifth completion deadline on Monday. Along with the three-year delay, the nuclear refurbishment project is roughly $1 billion over budget.

☢ <http://bit.ly/QPx2Nv> Thinking Outside the Nuclear Box There is an important societal choice to be made here. Either we commit to giving renewable energy a fair chance to become the mainstay of our society, or we continue to invest in nuclear plants and perpetually marginalize the non-nuclear alternatives. Energy efficiency, industrial cogeneration, combined cycle plants, smart grids and renewable energy sources deserve to be given the kind of favourable treatment once lavished on nuclear power. By Dr. Gordon Edwards.

Ontario

☢ <http://bit.ly/S6qSdW> Ontario NDP wavers on nuclear policy Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath appeared to backpedal on the party’s opposition to new nuclear plants in an early draft of a speech to an industry group Thursday. Please send your thoughts on the Darlington rebuild to yoursay at ndp.on.ca

☢ <http://www.ccnr.org/Darlington_refurb_2012.pdf> Do Not Refurbish the Darlington Reactors by Dr. Gordon Edwards, CCNR

☢ <http://bit.ly/WeGwYd> Waterkeeper on Darlington Nuclear Refurbishment There is no need for Darlington to kill fish; replacing the existing once-through cooling system with a closed-cycle cooling system that saves millions of fish, including endangered and vulnerable species, is affordable and entirely feasible. The Responsible Authorities should require OPG to install a closed-cycle cooling system and to stop killing millions of fish.

☢ <http://www.nowtoronto.com/news/story.cfm?content=189189> GE’s west-end Toronto secret Fifty years later, uranium pellet factory still a mystery to locals. “The GE Hitachi facility is part of the nuclear supply chain. This fuel chain is high-risk for Toronto.”

☼ <http://bit.ly/T2W8v7> Germany's renewable energy in the hands of citizens 51% of the renewable energy on the German grid is put there by individuals (like us) and farmers. Individuals and private investors are contributing the equivalent generation capacity in renewables of 20 nuclear reactors.

☼ <http://bit.ly/Q1nrUj> Ontario teaches world how not to run a FIT program Large developers crowded out small, community-based projects. Transmission and distribution infrastructure couldn’t keep up. Hydro One dragged its feet. Communities were marginalized. Pockets of anti-wind activists made a lot of noise. The government started second-guessing. Politicians who once championed the program got weaker in the knees.
