Jobs and Justice!

Tuesday, Oct. 23, 7 p.m.
Birchcliff Bluffs United Church, 33 East Road (just north of Warden Ave. & Kingston Rd.)
Free!

Guest Speakers:
John Cartwright, President, Toronto & York Region District Labour Council
Paul Bocking, Director & Producer of "2 Revolución", Scarborough teacher & community activist

About the film: Some believe that NAFTA took jobs from Canadian and American workers and sent them to Mexico. But free trade has proven to be even worse for Mexican workers and their communities. On the hundredth anniversary of the Mexican Revolution, community leaders, factory workers, educators, trade unionists and human rights activists speak about how Mexico has been affected by free trade and privatization and how grassroots social movements are promoting social justice across national borders.

Reimagine CBC: The Final Reveal

Revival Bar, 783 College
This is a PAY WHAT YOU CAN type of event, but our suggested donation is $10. The funds are used to sponsor our non-profit project and proliferate the results of the survey.

Join us for a night of celebration, comedy, music, and discussion with expert panelists as Reimagine CBC and Friends of Canadian Broadcasting present their respective findings about people's visions of Canadian media and its future! Comedy by RN and Cawls and hosting by Lisa Brooke! Stories and panel discussions by R.H. Thomson, Marie Nicola, Hamlin Grange, Toronto's neo-burslesque celebrity and NOW columnist Sasha Van Bon Bon, and Stephen Strauss. Music by Fighter/Lover and Maria Bonita and The Band! Complementary hor d'ouvres.

Given the dramatic economic and social changes that are now unfolding before us, we need informed, engaged citizens who can seize opportunities and confidently react to challenges. Public media organizations have a mandate to serve citizens, and this puts them in a unique position to add value and opportunity in this period of change. The CBC is in the process of conducting a major strategic review both internally and through outside regulators. The question is, who will shape the CBC of the future? We think you should. We’ll bring the best ideas to the CBC, and together we’ll work with decision-makers to turn your ideas into reality.

The Ugly Canadian - Stephen Harper's Foreign Policy

Wednesday, Oct 24 @ 7 pm
Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham (Bathurst and Bloor)

Yves Engler, in his most recent book, The Ugly Canadian , documents the sordid story of this country's sabotage of international environmental efforts, of a government "owned" by tar sands producers and a mining industry widely criticized for abuses. This sweeping critique details Harper's opposition to the "Arab Spring" democracy movement and backing for repressive Middle East monarchies as well as the Conservatives support for a military coup in Honduras and indifference to post-earthquake Haitian suffering.

Dispatches from the Occupation

Thursday October 25, 7:30 PM
at Pandemonium, 2862 Dundas Street West.

The Toronto New School of Writing is hosting a lecture by Stephen Collis about his book Dispatches from the Occupation, a History of Change. Dispatches from the Occupation (Talon Books 2012) is written in response to the combined, global ecological and economic crisis now rocking the entire world—and comes out of an awareness of how these two aspects of the crisis drive each other forward in a sort of feedback loop, though the real motor of destruction behind both crises is the idea that constant growth is both necessary and desirable—the means and end of social production—to which everything—air water labour life—can and must be sacrificed.

Battleship Potemkin with Live Music

Friday, Oct 26 @ 7 pm and Sat. Oct. 27
Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham (Bloor and Bathurst)

An extraordinary experience - Sergei Eisenstein's landmark 1925 silent film Battleship Potemkin complete with a re-imagined score performed live by a twelve-piece chamber jazz ensemble. Battleship Potemkin is widely recognized as one of the most influential films of all time and the earliest use of the medium for propaganda purposes and seminal in the development of the new medium to manipulate emotion and the masses. Almost 100 years later, images from Battleship Potemkin remain etched in popular cinema culture. To learn more.

Zombie Bike Lane Critical Mass Ride

Fri. Oct. 26, 6 p.m.
Meet at Bloor/Spadina parkette

Like you, we were extremely disappointed by the 24-19 loss at City Council on Oct 2nd to save the Jarvis St bike lanes. Cycle Toronto organized, held community meetings, held 2 large rides, launched a legal challenge and submitted a large petition. Community members wrote their councillors and demonstrated against the decision. In spite of this, City Council decided to turn Jarvis back into a highway. According to City staff, the Jarvis St. bike lanes will be gone by early November, but they’ll still be undead for the increasing numbers of us who use them regularly to get to school and work, and just get around. So let's come together one more time: dress up in your scariest Zombie Bike Lane costume and celebrate cycling in Toronto.

Budrus

Friday, October 26 – 7 p.m.
OISE, 252 Bloor St. West, Room 2-212 (St. George Subway Station)
Everyone welcome. $4 donation requested.

Follows a Palestinian leader who unites Fatah, Hamas and Israelis in a peaceful movement to save his village from destruction. Success eludes them until his 15-year-old daughter jumps into the fray. This documentary will be an eye-opener for many. It tells the story of an on-going non-violent protest movement on the West Bank of the Palestinian Territories, created and led by Palestinians--a people often portrayed as terrorists or fanatics by the Western media. Jake Javanshir, who lived in Israel for 20 years and is a member of Independent Jewish Voices and Not In Our Name, and Sue Goldstein, a member of the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network and Women in Solidarity with Palestine, will comment on the film.

Integrated Mobility: Steps Toward a New Mobility Culture

Friday, October 26, 2 - 4 pm
105 Bond Street, Room 312, Ryerson Campus (near Yonge and Dundas)

The City of Bremen in Germany is a global leader in sustainable transportation planning and implementation. As a result, the City has received several mobility awards, including being named CIVITAS City of the Year in 2005 and selected as a transport showcase at the 2010 “Better Cities – Better Life” World Exhibition in Shanghai. What political, institutional, cultural and financial arrangements has Bremen used to promote and integrate public transit, taxis, cycling and car-sharing? Can the GTA draw inspiration from Bremen to implement and ultimately build on Metrolinx’s Big Move plan? What mobility pricing and other funding tools should be part of the mix? Please join us for a cutting-edge discussion with Michael Glotz-Richter from the City of Bremen and Martin Collier from Transport Futures.
