In the spirit of the holiday season, make sure your prescription drug doesn't "spike" your holiday cocktail.
http://wp.rxisk.org/make-sure-your-prescription-drug-doesnt-spike-your-holiday-cocktail/

As David Healy says, "Even though it's the alcohol that is typically blamed, it may be the doctor-prescribed, pharmacist-dispensed drug that amplifies and sustains the alcohol level, which can result in impaired driving charges, a car crash or even the loss of your job."

City Budget Proposes to Penalize People for Helping the Environment

On November 30th, City Staff released the 2013 Operating and Capital Budgets to be voted on by City Council in mid January 2013. If adopted, the budget will penalize Torontonians for doing the right thing for the environment. Here is how:
	• It will eliminate programs that reduce energy use and curb climate change. City staff want to eliminate a $60 million Sustainable Energy Revolving Loan Fund that has helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions and electricity use as well as created thousands of green jobs. Read more here. http://torontoenvironment.org/campaigns/cityhall/2013budget/energy
	• It will impose another transit fare increase that penalizes people for using transit and helping clean the air. Every year, City Hall contributes to paying transportation costs such as road repairs, sidewalk maintenance and operating the TTC. Unfortunately, the TTC contribution is going down, when calculated on a per ride basis. That means people who do the right thing must pay more. Toronto already has the lowest per ride transit contribution of any major North America city and it keeps going down. Read more here. http://torontoenvironment.org/campaigns/cityhall/2013budget/transit

Take Action: Phone or email http://app.toronto.ca/wards/jsp/wards.jsp your City Councillor and ask them to not penalize Torontonians for helping the environment by keeping the Sustainable Energy Revolving Loan Fund and increasing the city contribution to the TTC to stop a fare hike

Hop to it! RaBIT Volunteer Meeting!

Monday, 17 December, 7 pm
Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen St. West (at Bay)
All welcome • Juice and cookies will be served

Wanna make a difference? This is your chance to get involved with a fun campaign that could transform our local elections, making them more fair and friendly. Runoff voting eliminates vote-splitting and strategic voting, gives voters more choice, and encourages positive campaigns! We've held two public "Info Sessions" to explain our proposal and answer questions about ranked ballots or Instant Runoff Voting. This gathering is not a general info session (although we're happy to answer questions). This meeting is specifically about how YOU can make a difference and help us bring about positive change in Toronto. You don't need any special skills or background. We're just looking for people who are passionate about democracy, and support our call for Instant Runoff Voting for municipal elections.

Join Us for an Evening of Solidarity and Celebration

Monday, December 17, 7 - 9 p.m.
Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham Street (near Bloor and Bathurst)

For years, many of us have called for a meaningful alliance between organized labour and the unemployed. We have understood that solidarity between trade unionists and the poorest members of the working class is vital to any real social progress. At last, we are witnessing inspiring movement in that direction. And we invite you to join us in discussing how to deepen this growing solidarity between trade union and anti-poverty activists. Over the last two years, thanks to the initiative of many dedicated activists, the Ontario Division of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has actively partnered with the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) in numerous activities, including the “Raise the Rates” campaign around social assistance in Ontario. We now have an opportunity to extend and deepen this exciting collaboration between unions and anti-poverty organizing. To do that, we need to draw more labour and social movement activists, more progressive artists and academics, into this work. And we need to assist CUPE Ontario’s work in strengthening the financial infrastructure that sustains OCAP.

To all these ends, please join us for a night of talks, music, video and celebration devoted to supporting OCAP and building anti-poverty struggles in Ontario

Holiday Transit Schmooze!

Thursday, December 20, 6 pm
Centre for Social Innovation. 720 Bathurst (just South of Bloor, on the West side of the street)

Time for a Free and Accessible Holiday Schmooze! A lot of stuff is happening on the public transit front: new LRT’s with P3’s; increased fares; talk of new projects without funding; building new movements; and, of course, the possible “loss” of Toronto’s current Mayor. Those of us who want to create a space for an eco-socialist, social justice take on the larger public transit movement in Toronto need to spend more time talking and building together. The folks at the Free and Accessible Transit Campaign of the Greater Toronto Workers' Assembly invite you to a very informal get together, to share some good cheer, food and conversation about developing a Red-Green perspective on public transit in this city.

Rock Against Line 9

Sun. Jan. 6, 2 p.m. - midnight
Tranzac Club

Come on out to our "Rock Against Line 9 !" awareness/fundraiser show. A full day of performances, speakers, information sharing and treats!

Line 9 is a controversial Enbridge pipeline that we are going to stop from becoming part of the tar sands pipe line network! Some "powerful" folks would like to use this pipeline to send tar sands oil to the east coast (NB or Maine) and beyond. But not if we have something to say (or sing) about it. Be warned, the tar sands are not just an Alberta environmental disaster - the tentacles are spreading all over our continent.
