Ride for Renewables

Love cycling? Love green energy? On Sun. May 26th, break out your bicycles and rally together with Greenpeace volunteers, concerned citizens, cycling enthusiasts and others who want a green energy future for Ontario. This 45km Ride for Renewables from Pickering nuclear station to Darlington nuclear station couldn’t come at a more urgent time.

Our government has told Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to build new nuclear reactors at Darlington nuclear station instead of investing in renewable energy and conservation. It’s also looking to rebuild the aging reactors at Darlington. That’s wrong. We’re riding from Pickering to Darlington for a renewable future. A safe, clean, affordable and innovate green energy future is ready to flourish in Ontario; it just needs a little room to grow.

Join us - please rsvp and we'll send you more details.

A Place at the Table

Playing daily till Sat. April 13
Bloor Hot Docs Cinema (Bloor and Bathurst)

One in four American children doesn’t know where their next meal is coming from. From hard-working families surviving on food bank hand-outs to children of low-income households facing obesity because of a reliance on cheap fast food, A Place At The Table puts a different face on poverty—that of the working poor. Rosie is a fifth-grader who struggles to concentrate at school, distracted by constant hunger. Barbie, a single mother, is trying to rise above the poverty of her childhood to provide a better life for her children. A Place At The Table takes us into the lives of people we wouldn’t normally identify as living in poverty and into the homes of the thousands now surviving on hand-outs from food banks, and looks into why, in one of the most prosperous countries in the world, so many are going hungry. Transport Futures Mobility Funding Symposium

Mon. April 8
Metropolitan Hotel, Toronto

The public is being consulted on various taxes and user fees (aka revenue tools) that could generate needed funds for GTHA transport infrastructure. Are citizens being given the information necessary to provide meaningful input rather than gut reactions? Can politicians and government officials accurately evaluate each funding measure so that economic, environmental and social policies are met? To ensure that informed decisions are made, we invite you to learn from global experts about cost benefit analysis and other assessment frameworks that systematically examine which revenue tools best meet sustainability goals set out by Canadian and international governments. Greenspiration supporters receive a 10% discount on our early bird rates. Use discount code (DC) GRSP7 when registering.

No Tar Sands in Toronto! Stop Line 9
With Ron Plain of Aamjiwnaang First Nation and a Panel of speakers followed by open discussion.

Monday, April 8, 7 p.m.
Danvenport-Perth Neighbourhood Health Civic Centre 1900 Davenport Rd. (west of Symington)

What is Line 9? Line 9 was built in 1975 to transport conventional oil westwards from Montreal to Sarnia. Now Enbridge wants to reverse the flow and use it to pump bitumen from the tar sands east. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, “These heavy metals have a variety of toxic effects, are not biodegradable, and can accumulate in the environment to become health hazards to wildlife and people.”

Line 9 passes through the most densely-populated area in Canada, including Toronto, and through critical watersheds including the St. Clair River, the Thames River, and the Grand River. Line 9 also passes through First Nations territories that have not been consulted, and that have already had experience with oil and chemical companies. According to Ron Plain, member of Aamjiwnaang First Nation, “The lands these companies operate upon were stolen from my community and turned into a toxic wasteland without our consent or consultation...Instead of feeding my family these lands kill my community.”

A tar sands spill on Enbridge’s Line 9 could spread toxic fumes across the city and foul the rivers feeding our Lake Ontario water supply. The magnificent Idle No More movement has brought the tar sands issue to national attention. Exploitation of the tar sands speeds up climate change, posing a threat to all the world’s peoples.

Numerous organizations, community groups, and NGO’s from one end of the city to the other have already hit the streets and started raise awareness about Line 9. Toronto City Councillors have voted unanimously to demand information on Enbridge’s plans and intervene in regulatory hearings. We need you to speak up!

Organized by West End No Line 9.

Raise the Rates!

Week of Provincial Actions against Wynne Liberals in lead up to the 2013 budget
April 8th - 15th

• No cut to the Special Diet.
• Restore the Community Start Up and Maintenance Benefit
• No downloading of ODSP or forcing people with disabilities into poverty jobs
• Restore OW and ODSP rates to where they were in 1995 - A 56% increase is needed now
• End the freeze on the minimum wage. Set it at $14 and index it to inflation.

Kathleen Wynne, after serving in the McGuinty Government and being part of its attack on social assistance and the poor is asking us to believe that she is now the 'Social Justice Premier'. She wants our communities to stop mobilizing and challenging her and to go back to the failed strategy of consultations with the Government instead. The Raise the Rates Campaign sees no reason to trust Wynne or to stop confronting the Liberal government's austerity agenda. We are demanding real measures to increase sub poverty social assistance rates and low wages and we are ready to fight back against cutbacks and attacks on the poor her Government might be considering in its upcoming Budget.

862 Richmond Street West, Suite 300

Presented by fran freeman and Melissa Berney. Against the backdrop of a rural food-producing system heavily dependant on pesticides, monocultures, GMOs and petrochemicals, urban environments provide an oasis for honeybees. Cities also present their own beekeeping challenges. While it’s not possible to learn all you need to know in a two-hour session, an overview of urban beekeeping in several cities will be given and topics touched on will include choosing a site, beekeeping regulations, basic beekeeping gear, some hive and frame options, the beekeeping year, bee-friendly forage and wild pollinator support.

Equal Pay Day - Close the Gap

Tues. April 9
Rally at Noon at Queen's Park

Send a letter to Premier Wynne here: http://www.equalpaycoalition.org/
Wear Red to mark how far women are in the “red” when it comes to their pay.

In Ontario, women are “in the red” because they continue to earn on average 28 percent less than men for work of equal value. This wage gap is even more stark for racialized women, women with disabilities and Aboriginal women.

Toronto Action to Stop GM Alfalfa

Tuesday April 9, 12 noon - 1 pm
Outside St Lawrence Market (on the sidewalk) (Front and Church)

Bring your banners. Bring your voices. Together we can stop the release of GM alfalfa. Monsanto's genetically modified (GM) alfalfa could be registered for use in Eastern Canada this April! GM Roundup Ready alfalfa varieties have just been cleared for the last step before they hit the market - all they need now is a final rubber-stamp by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Alfalfa is used to produce many of the foods we eat! Alfalfa (commonly harvested as hay) is high-protein feed for animals like dairy cows, beef cattle, lambs, poultry and pigs. It's also used to build nutrients in the soil and is important for organic farming.

Because alfalfa is a perennial plant that is pollinated by bees, genetically modified alfalfa will inevitably cross-pollinate with non-GM and organic alfalfa, threatening the livelihoods of family farmers across Canada. Prairie farmers have already rejected GM alfalfa because of the threat of contamination, so now the industry is trying to introduce GM alfalfa in Eastern Canada.

This action is hosted by The Big Carrot Natural Food Market, No More GMOs Toronto, Millions Against Monsanto Toronto, Kids Right To Know GMO Rally, Canadian Organic Growers-Toronto, and the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network. This call for a Day of Action to Stop GM Alfalfa was issued by the National Farmers Union-Ontario.

On hand to help answer your questions will be several of the TechSoup Canada staff who have experience using platforms and tools such as Facebook, Twitter, Tweetdeck, Hootsuite, Bit.ly, Pinterest, Google+ and Tumblr.

Toronto's Future Weather and Climate
Get informed. Get ready for a much hotter, wetter Toronto

Tuesday, April 9, 7 - 9:30 pm
Swansea Town Hall, 95 Lavinia Ave

Green 13 welcomes speaker Franz Hartmann, Executive Director of Toronto Environmental Alliance.

In the wake of extreme and costly events such as the wash out of part of Finch Avenue during a one-hour intense summer storm in August 2005, and the marked increase in summer temperatures, the City commissioned SENES Consulting to examine monitored data (2000-2009) and to model results for 2040-2049. The result:Toronto's Future Weather and Climate Driver Study outlines the severe weather we can expect in 2040 due to climate change. Toronto will be facing dramatically warmer temperatures and an increase in heavy summer rainfall. What are the implications? How will this hotter, wetter weather affect our health? our homes? our environment? ourinfrastructure?

The Contested City: Radical Perspectives on Gentrification

Saturday, April 13, 9:30 am
Ryerson Student Centre, 1st floor, 55 Gould St.

The city has always been a primary site of struggle. Today, the lingering effects of the 2007-2008 US sub-prime mortgage crisis have left an international legacy of misery and hardship in its wake, identifiable by a drastic rise in unemployment, poverty and growing levels of homelessness. These problems have only been exacerbated by the prescribed 'solution' to the crisis; what economists, governments and media pundits have termed 'austerity' is in fact nothing more than a vicious attack on the social safety net and the life sustaining services that working-class people have spent generations fighting to secure. These neo-liberal policies also have a flip-side: many of our cities have witnessed an explosion of gentrification, often coming in the form of frenzied condo development and the growth of trendy commercial districts. This reconfiguring of the city represents an attempt by capital to change the character and composition of urban spaces to reflect its ongoing need to expand, regardless of human consequences. But the city has not been entirely ceded to the logic of capitalism: the world over, neighbourhoods and communities have organized themselves to defend housing and social/community centres, and are demanding freedom from harassment by police, predatory developers and their crony politicians in city hall. Employing tactics ranging from advocacy to direct action, this work represents a vital counter-narrative to the myth of gentrification as an inevitable manifestation of progress.

Supporting Deep Change, Inclusively - with Kate Sutherland

Sunday April 14, 7 - 9 pm
OISE-UT in the Peace Lounge, 252 Bloor St West –7th Floor (above the St. George Subway)

More of us are waking up to the need for deep change. Some focus on environmental sustainability, others on social justice. Some on pioneering new forms of business or governance, and others on healing the disconnect between people and what is sacred. And so much more. This diversity brings beautiful strengths and richness, and also tremendous challenges. How can we work together? How can we balance focus and openness? What are the ways through the scattering energies of our natural frustration and irritation with each other to leverage our multiple perspectives, brilliance and capacity? Join us for an experiential session dedicated to supporting deep change, inclusively. You’ll gain tools (ways of seeing) to support better outcomes in all types of group situations.
