Speak Up For Public Transit!

TTCriders needs your help to make sure the voice of transit riders is heard loud and clear. The City of Toronto is conducting a survey on the flow of surface traffic in the downtown core. The Downtown Transportation Operations Study (DTOS) claims to be "committed to helping all road users," but some sections suggest there may be a bias in favour of automobiles. Downtown is home to many of the most heavily-used surface routes in the TTC system: the streetcars on King, Queen, Dundas, Bathurst, Spadina, and Queen's Quay, and the buses on Bay and Jarvis. Let's make sure the city knows thatthese routes are important to us!

April is Latin America & Caribbean Solidarity Month!!

We intend to honour the life and achievements of President Hugo Chávez in reflecting on and building the themes for this year which are peace, justice and solidarity. Through this initiative we aim to create places of convergence that challenge the current paradigm while exploring alternatives through reflection, discussion, debate and critical engagement. We will explore local and international issues while, at the same time, build solidarity with the social movements and progressive governments of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Ride for Renewables

Love cycling? Love green energy? On Sun. May 26th, break out your bicycles and rally together with Greenpeace volunteers, concerned citizens, cycling enthusiasts and others who want a green energy future for Ontario. This 45km Ride for Renewables from Pickering nuclear station to Darlington nuclear station couldn’t come at a more urgent time. Our government has told Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to build new nuclear reactors at Darlington nuclear station instead of investing in renewable energy and conservation. It’s also looking to rebuild the aging reactors at Darlington. That’s wrong. We’re riding from Pickering to Darlington for a renewable future. A safe, clean, affordable and innovate green energy future is ready to flourish in Ontario; it just needs a little room to grow.

Join us - please rsvp and we'll send you more details.

While academy is often based on ongoing debate, community organizers often make real-time decisions. We propose to disrupt this difference. Ahead of time, panelists will share with each other a piece that embodies their idea of decolonization (quote, poem, image) and have a real time discussion of what is at stake when we define Decolonization and what needs to be taken into account in that naming process.

Peter Munk, UofT, and Barrick Gold: info session

Tues. April 16, 6:30 p.m.
OISE, 252 Bloor room 5150

The Munk Contract which established the Munk School of Global Affairs was signed in secret and not publicly available until a request put out by two professors. The details turned out to be scandalous. Find out why the U of T now houses a right-wing think tank. Find out what we mean when we say that Munk’s donation came with “strings attached”. Find out about Barrick’s history of threats to academic freedom. And find out what this all means in the bigger picture.

The event will be hosted by researcher and activist, Sakura Saunders, who will take you on a tour that starts with a contract and ends with the take over of public institutions, the repression of the truth, and corporate impunity.

See: http://theblueandwhite.ca/article/2011/02/09/00/00/10/the-perils-of-philanthropy.html to read about the critique of the contract from two professors who unearthed the infamous munk contract!

Criminalization of Dissent
On the occasion of Palestine Political Prisoners’ Day

Wed. April 17, 6:30 p.m.
OISE - Room 5-250 (252 Bloor Street West - St. George Subway Station)

A panel discussion in solidarity with political prisoners around the globe. Land Defenders, Human Rights and Political Activists are imprisoned! The judicial system and the rule of law are being used as instruments of state violence. Peoples around the world who organize and resist the onslaught of colonial land theft, extractive industries, and state repression are arrested and indefinitely being kept in prison as a strategy to silence their voices and crush their struggles to assert their right to self-determination and sovereignty. Please join us to hear these stories, identify common strategies and discuss effective community responses.

Knock Off Line 9

Sat. April 20, 10 a.m.
Members’ Lounge of the North York Civic Centre

Community groups and individuals all over Ontario and Quebec are raising important questions about Enbridge’s Line 9 proposal. The energy building around this movement is similar to what happened in British Columbia against the Northern Gateway project. That movement may well have turned the tide on what was thought to be a rubber stamp approval for that project. We can do the same thing here. All of us together can reach out to our friends, neighbours, elected representatives and spread the word about the risk Line 9 poses to our communities.

On Saturday April 20th, two days before Earth Day, people from across Toronto will meet in the morning for Knock off Line 9, get trained up, and set out to knock on doors and talk to their fellow Torontonians about the dangers of the Line 9 proposal. The East End No Line 9 Group, the West End No Line 9 Group, Environmental Defence and others are putting together this fun, energizing day to reach out to communities across Toronto to talk to them about Line 9.

Going door-to-door can be, quite frankly, scary. That’s why we’ll start the day at 10 am with some good music, snacks, and a solid and fun training on what to expect at the door. There will be lunch before everyone heads out in teams across the city, where you will work with a partner to speak to your neighbours about Line 9 in the afternoon. We’ll all gather at the end of the day for some food and drink and share our experiences.

Please invite your friends and family to join, and RSVP here: https://docs.google.com/a/environmentaldefence.ca/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dGp3SXI1Ynh6SjcwZ0Q0RmhjY1FZQ0E6MQ

Want to get involved in organizing? We’d love to add to the organizing committee! Please get in touch with me at sbowman at environmentaldefence.ca or at 416-323-9521 x 249

Mother Earth Day - Protecting Mother Earth and 7 Generations Against Line 9

Sun. April 21, 3 pm – Drumming, speakers, music
At the hydro corridor at Finch and Dufferin which is public land. There is parking one block north, and the site is accessible via the Finch or Dufferin bus.

The goal of Mother Earth Day is to build bridges between Canadian faith groups and Indigenous peoples while working together on common environmental concerns such as Line 9. We believe it's time for Canadians to take responsibility for their part of the problem—one which impacts both Canadian and Indigenous communities. You and your family are invited to an afternoon of education and reflection leading to action. This is an opportunity to learn about Line 9 and be equipped to be part of the ongoing work. People of faith will be encouraged to go out and educate others in their faith communities. The fight against Line 9 will be a long one and Mother Earth Day is a moment in time when we will ground ourselves in creation and re-commit to her protection.

- There will be a passing of the hat for donations to provide some monetary thanks to the Drummers, Musicians, & Speakers.
- There will be a large scale pledge for participants to sign as they arrive that will encourage colouring and drawing. It will read "I am protecting Mother Earth"
- The overall tone of the event will be educational and reflective.

All Proceeds from this event will help subsidize local volunteer members to travel to Washington DC for Creating a Climate for Change - Citizens Climate Lobby's conference lobbying days in Washington DC June 23 -25.

Acclaimed photographer James Balog deploys revolutionary time-lapse cameras to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers. His hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate. Traveling with a team of young adventurers across the brutal Arctic, Balog risks his career and his well-being in pursuit of the biggest story facing humanity. After the film finishes (approximately 80 minutes) there will be a discussion about the work of Citizens Climate Lobby in Toronto.
