City's Waste Wizard
Wondering what to do with paint cans, plastic packaging and even
poison ivy? For these and other items that you want to get rid of,
visit the City's Waste Wizard. This online tool lists how to properly
dispose of over 1,500 items. Waste Wizard focuses on solutions for
residents with curbside collection, but the sorting information also
applies to residents in apartments and condominiums. So far in 2013,
there have been over 34,000 visits to the online tool. Sorting your
materials and using the proper bin is an important part of Toronto's
waste management system. If you don't recycle properly, it
contaminates the recycling stream, damages equipment and can cause
workplace injuries. http://app.toronto.ca/wes/winfo/search.do

A solution to Toronto's $2.5 billion public transit expansion

A recent report by CCPA-Ontario economist Hugh Mackenzie lays out a
range of revenue generating options that could readily fund plans to
expand public transit in the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton.
Mackenzie assesses all of the funding options currently on the table,
weighs the pros and cons of each, and considers a package of tax
options that would be fair and efficient. His report comes at a time
when the city and the province are considering options to move transit
expansion plans forward. It offers a range of solutions that could
represent a compromise position for politicians seeking a resolution
to the region's political and traffic gridlock.

Hamilton Public Transit Expansion Revenue Options.

Transport Futures: The Great Media Debate

Monday, June 24, 1 - 3:30 p.m.
Innis Town Hall, University of Toronto, 2 Sussex Avenue
Early Bird Rates: $15 - $35 (until June 14)

After five years of study, Metrolinx submitted its Investment Strategy
recommendations to the Ontario government on May 27. As debate
intensifies on which taxes and user fees will ultimately pay for the
$50 billion Big Move regional transportation plan, the media will be
reporting on the evolving political and public positions. Having their
own ideas on how revenue tools can -- or cannot – assist in achieving
economic, environmental and social policy objectives, how will members
of the press influence public opinion? Don’t miss this opportunity
to discuss how Metrolinx and the media shape support for complex
funding measures in the context of worsening congestion, a large
provincial deficit, governance challenges, a potential election and
public cynicism. Speakers include: Judy Pfeifer, Metrolinx * Terence
Corcoran, National Post * Marcus Gee, The Globe and Mail * Sue-Ann
Levy, The Toronto Sun * John Lorinc, Spacing Magazine.

Support Protected Bike Lanes on Richmond & Adelaide!
Action Alert: Attend a Public Meeting

Tuesday, June 25 and Wednesday, June 26
9 a.m. to 9 p.m. – Materials on display
3 p.m. to 8 p.m. – Project team on site to answer questions
Tuesday, 6 p.m. – Spoken presentation of the materials
City Hall Rotunda, 100 Queen St. W.

Next week, the City is hosting a drop-in session on protected bike
lanes on Richmond & Adelaide. Based on our initial analysis, we prefer
unidirectional lanes on both Richmond and Adelaide; they can be
implemented quickly, are continuous and safer. Residents’
associations, BIAs and businesses are saying similar things. Attend a
drop in meeting next week and speak in favour of unidirectional lanes
on Richmond & Adelaide!

North-South connections within the downtown core are also under
consideration within the study. Peter and Simcoe have been identified
for protected bike lanes and we think the City should add lanes to
both streets! Attend a meeting next week.

Socialist Games

Thursdays June 27, 7 - 9 p.m.
The Theatre Centre Pop-Up / 1095 Queen St. West (at Dovercourt)
Cost: Sliding scale - From each according to her finances, to each
according to his need (Or PWYC: something around $5-10 would be nice).

Mammalian Diving Reflex is getting downright jockish this summer with
Socialist* Games - an evening of shifting our asses into gear and
engaging in some aggressive merriment. And we don't mean sitting
around a table sipping cappuccinos and playing some pussy-ass
boardgames. Socialist* Games calls on strangers to play with strangers
in wave after wave of summer-camp style activities - minus the summer
camp, plus awkwardness and double the hotness. By the end of the night
you will be much more sweaty, much less of a stranger, and a much more
of a socialist*.

*Socialist, n. One inclined to seek out and enjoy the company of others.
