Please vote for us!

If you think the work of the Ontario Clean Air Alliance is super exceptional – we're behind ON's coal phase-out after all, and now we're taking on the nuclear industry in Ontario – please vote for us as Best Enviro Group in NOW Mag here: http://nowtoronto.com/fbApps/bestof/nominees.cfm?category=159&subcategory=1515

And I've been nominated in the Best Activist category alongside other kick-ass enviros. What an honour! Though I'd rather it not be a competition, you can vote here: http://nowtoronto.com/fbApps/bestof/nominees.cfm?category=159&subcategory=1509

Thank you!

Scarborough Transit Expansion Update

Transit expansion plans for Scarborough are once again up in the air. This delay is unfortunate because Scarborough residents need new rapid transit lines that are integrated into a city-wide network as soon as possible. Read about what’s at stake and TEA’s (Toronto Environmental Alliance) position.

Urgently needed: volunteers to canvass on the Emerald Ash Borer problem

All of the 860.000 ash trees in Toronto, over 8% of our urban forest, are at risk of dying due to the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) including those growing in neighbourhoods like yours. This invasive pest tunnels underneath the bark, cutting off teh flow of water and nutrients and killing the tree within 2-3 years. We urgently need volunteers to canvass door-to door to help get word out regarding the perilous situation of Toronto's ash trees. Here is a link to the excellent resources made available by LEAF, including 3 short, info-packed videos, to help people understand the situation, identify ash trees, and know more about the Emerald Ash Borer: http://www.yourleaf.org/eab-resources Please post this widely.

Canvassing opportunities will be posted on an ongoing basis at:

Energy East Pipeline: Building a Nation on a Nightmare

TransCanada officially announced on August 1 a $12-billion Energy East tar sands pipeline project. If constructed, the pipeline would run from Alberta to the coast of St. John, New Brunswick, and would carry 1.1 million barrels of crude a day, which would enable a 50 per cent increase tar sands production.

Terms And Conditions May Apply

Aug. 2 – 14
The Bloor Hot Docs Cinema (Bloor and Bathurst)

No one really reads the terms and conditions connected to every website they visit, phone call they make or app they download. After watching this provocative exploration of what actually lies between the lines of those tiny-font agreements, however, you may just hurl your computer out the window and take to a cave. With fascinating examples, comical gags and terrifying facts, filmmaker Cullen Hoback investigates what governments and corporations are doing with your “personal” information. Regardless of privacy settings, data is being collected and behaviour is being monitored—as you read this, in fact—leaving the future of civil liberties uncertain. But are we really living in such a dystopian conspiratorial world? From whistle blowers and investigative journalists to zombie fan clubs and Egyptian dissidents, this disquieting exposé demonstrates how every one of us has incrementally opted into a real-time surveillance state, click by click.

Fear of a Black Nation: Race, Sex and Security in Sixties Montreal
Book launch with author David Austin

Thursday, August 8, 7 pm
A Different Booklist, 746 Bathurst Street

In the 1960s, for at least a brief moment, Montreal became what seemed an unlikely centre of Black Power and the Caribbean left. In October 1968 the Congress of Black Writers at McGill University brought together well-known Black thinkers and activists from Canada, the United States, Africa, and the Caribbean—people like C.L.R. James, Stokely Carmichael, Miriam Makeba, Rocky Jones, and Walter Rodney. Within months of the Congress, a Black-led protestat Sir George Williams University (now Concordia) exploded on the front pages of newspapers across the country—raising state security fears about Montreal as the new hotbed of international Black radical politics.

France: One year after the Sarkozy defeat

Thursday August 8, 6:30pm
720 Bathurst Street, Centre for Social Justice

François Hollande and his Socialist Party came to power following presidential and legislative elections in May-June 2012. While the defeat of hard-Right president Nicolas Sarkozy and his UMP party certainly came as a huge relief, Hollande and his government have essentially pursued the same agenda as the defeated forces of the Right and have plummeted in the opinion polls. How have the forces to the left of the Hollande government responded in a context of Socialist disarray, continuing economic crisis in France and the EU and growing popularity of the far-Right Front National party? What are their prospects in the coming period? Come out for a talk and discussion about these and other questions with a supporter of the GTWA and Socialist Project who has been living in France for the past year and who is a member of the New Anti-Capitalist Party (NPA) in Paris.

Co-sponsored by: Centre for Social Justice, Greater Toronto Workers’ Assembly and Socialist Project
