One of those claims is that the use of thorium “fuel” instead of uranium fuel eliminates the threat of nuclear weapons proliferation because “thorium-fuelled reactors” do not produce plutonium as a byproduct. This claim is profoundly misleading.

There’s a new proposal to transport radioactive waste that is of concern to municipalities, not just in Quebec, but also in Ontario and the United States — involving a much more dangerous radioactive shipment. The federal government is planning to truck 23,000 litres of high-level radioactive liquid waste from Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) in Ontario to the Savannah River Site (SRS), in South Carolina, 2,000 kilometres away. Such shipments have never before been made in North America. The extreme radiotoxicity of high-level nuclear waste is well known; in liquid form, it would be impossible to recover once spilled. A few litres can ruin a city’s water supply.
