The New Commune-ist Manifesto: Workers Of The World, It Really Is Time To Unite
Launch for Ernesto Raj Peshkov-Chow's new book

Mon. Sept. 2, 7 pm.
Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham

The book starts with a question: If Karl Marx were alive today and asked to write a new edition of The Communist Manifesto, how would it be different from the original, composed 165 years ago? The New Commune-ist Manifesto is the answer. While following the spirit of the old, the New Manifesto is written for the twenty-first-century working class and transforms the original from a historical document into a call-for-action to build an economic democracy based on environmental sustainability. The book argues that regaining our vision of an alternative to the existing system is the key to rebuilding the workers movement. But this vision must be more than “pie in the sky” — it must be practical and based on experience. It must confront the real problems we face, including the environmental crisis that jeopardizes our planet.

Occupy Economics
The Corporate System of International Economic Relations

Tues. Sept. 3, 6:30 pm.
Steelworkers Hall, 25 Cecil
Free

At the height of the Colonial Period, the Western powers in a number of trading enclaves around the world enjoyed what was called ‘extraterritorial power’: their citizens and commercial enterprises were governed by the colonial powers own legal systems and not the host nations. At the moment the sisterhood of multinational corporations (today including state-owned Chinese multinationals) are replicating such a system, established under the guise of a set of international trade agreements with so-called ‘investor protection’ clauses. Modelled on NAFTA's chapter 11, they will triumph corporate profit over environment protection, human rights, fight for gender equality, for labour rights, etc. National and local legislation will be superseded by board of arbitrators. We must wake up the Canadian people up to the implications of this sacrifice on the altar of corporate profit maximization.

Alone Inside
a radio documentary by Brett Story

Tuesday September 3, 9 pm
CBC Radio 1, 99.1 FM (also streaming online and available as a podcast http://www.cbc.ca/ideas)

When the concept of solitary confinement was first implemented in the early 19th century, the idea was not to punish the prisoner, but to give him space to reflect and reform. Two centuries later, despite the growing use of segregation in Canada and the United States, the practice continues to produce very different results. Prisoners who have lived through solitary confinement say the experience is torturous. Freelance journalist Brett Story explores the roots of this practice in North America, and the profound and often devastating impact it has on people who are severed from social contact.

We will be hosting an overview of politics and government 101, followed by talks with change-making women:
- Heather Marshall, Toronto Environmental Alliance
- Crystal Melin, Native Women's Resource Centre and
- Lauren Baker, Toronto Food Policy Council.

Join the conversation, learn something new, and gain confidence in engaging with the political issues that impact your daily life.
