Poor People's Inquiry

Put Food in the Budget is holding hearings across Ontario to allow social assistances recipients (and volunteers/staff of organizations working with low-income people) to testify about the adequacy (or inadequacy) of current social assistance rates and policies, and to judge whether the Premier Wynne has lived up to her stated commitment to social justice. The Ontario government is currently developing a new poverty reduction strategy, a plan for social assistance reform, and a new budget, so now is a key moment to encourage the implemention of fair and adequate social assistance rates and income supports for Ontarians. Please attend - and encourage others to attend - one of the following Toronto hearings:

* Tuesday December 3, Noon (lunch), 12:30-3 pm (Inquiry) at the Parkdale Anti-Poverty Resource Centre, 1497 Queen Street West (west of Jamieson)
* Thursday December 5, 1:00 – 3:00 pm at the Stop Community Food Centre, 1884 Davenport Rd (west of Lansdowne)
* Friday December 6, 1:00 – 3:00 pm at South Riverdale CHC, 955 Queen Street East (at Carlaw)
Free. Refreshments. TTC tokens are available.

Toronto's Homeless Shelters are Full - Open More Shelter Space Now!
Breakfast and Rally

Wednesday, December 4, 9 a.m.
Toronto City Hall, Bay and Queen

Last winter, OCAP took action to challenge overcrowding in the shelters. The City responded by promising, in April, to ensure that their facilities would operate at a maximum occupancy of 90%. They had the option to open up new space immediately. But instead the immediate response by Hostel Services was to lay down 'flex beds' and try and cram more people into the shelters. Even with this sad attempt to make the numbers look better, the City has failed for 8 consecutive months to abide by its own 90% capacity standard. The crowding is getting worse as the weather gets colder and the risk of street deaths increases.
On December 4th the Community Development and Recreation Committee of City Council is meeting once again. They will be receiving a report from their staff on measures to deal with the crisis in the shelters. OCAP and others in the community will be going to the Committee meeting to demand no further delays - the City must open more shelters immediately to ensure no one else has to die on the streets. Please come out and show the politicians we will not let them abandon homeless people. No more homeless deaths.
Contact OCAP if you are interested in speaking and we can add your name: 416-925-6939 / ocap at tao.ca

Oppose First Nation Education Act
Peaceful rally to oppose First Nation Education Act. Say "No" to more assimilation policy!

Wed. Dec. 4, 10:30 am
Balfour Park, 25 St. Clair Avenue East
For over 137 years, the federal government has enforced assimilation policies on First Nations people with dismal outcomes. In January 2014, the federal government will introduce a First Nations Education Act for an aggregated structure, defined standards and increased reporting requirements for K-12 First Nations community schools. These imposed changes do not address communities' needs, or the funding needed to carry them out. Join us in our stance to protect First Nations' children. Come and let your voices be heard. Let's empower First Nations students to be successful!

16th Annual Festival of Lights Service - An Interspiritual celebration

Sunday, Dec 8, 1:30 pm (sharp)
Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham (near Bloor and Bathurst)
$10
Many religions use light — inner and outer — to symbolize their prayers and hopes for what is right with the world, especially at this holiday season. Representatives from the Baha'i, Buddhist, Christian, Divine Feminine, Indigenous, Hindu, Jewish, Moslem, Sufi and Zoroastrian traditions will share their faith, their passion and their creativity in sacred words, poetry, chants, songs and music. There will be plenty of light to go around, with a candle lit for each religion, and a candle to symbolize our unity and mutual support. There will be opportunities to participate in many of the chants. A festive interspiritual celebration!
Sponsored by the Toronto Area Interfaith Council (TAIC) and by the Awakening Heart Circle, A Sufi Order International Centre in Toronto
