Promising New Developments in the Fight against Fossil Fuels

Mon. Jan 13, 7 - 9 pm
St. Michael & All Angels Church (south east corner of St. Clair and Wychwood, enter from Wychwood through wooden gates, come up to 2nd floor)

Speakers: Rob Shirkey, President, Our Horizon; and Stuart Basden, President, Toronto 350.org
Climate scientists tell us that to avert a global catastrophe we must stop burning the fossil fuels now powering our economies. Clearly this won’t be easy, given that most of us (as consumers or investors) are part of the equation that makes these fuels so profitable. However, thanks to some recent developments in climate science and energy finance, that equation may be changing. Are we approaching one of those “tipping points” where small but concerted efforts can trigger a major shift?

Deadly Dangers of Misusing Medication – an Oss Talk

Tues. Jan. 14
7 p.m. - Sergio Gonzalez Alvarez
7:30 p.m. - Interview with David Carmichael
The Ossington, 61 Ossington (just north of Queen)
Free.

Sergio Gonzalez Alvarez is a Cuban rhythm guitarist. David Carmichael will speak about the Deadly Dangers of Misusing Medication.
The misuse and abuse of prescription drugs and over-the-counter medication is becoming a major public health concern across the country. David Carmichael, media relations officer at RxISK.org, will speak to these growing health concerns. David will also share his own tragic story that was caused by self-medicating with the antidepressant Paxil in 2004. Three weeks after starting Paxil and 2 weeks after increasing his dosage to a therapeutic level, David killed his 11-year-old son Ian. He was charged with first degree murder. David was diagnosed as being in a “major depression” with “psychotic episodes” when he took the life of Ian and was judged to be Not Criminally Responsible. He received an absolute discharge from the Ontario Review Board in 2009 and now educates the public about medication safety.

Oss Talks are a community conversation, held the 2nd Tues. of each month at The Ossington, hosted by Angela Bischoff of Greenspiration and Ontario Clean Air Alliance. For more info or to volunteer your talent, angela at cleanairalliance.org

Turnout Toronto: A Civic Engagement Fair

Tuesday, January 14, 5 p.m.
Centre of Social Innovation (Annex), 720 Bathurst Street

On January 14th we're going to host a civic engagement fair that's similar to the job fair model, but instead people will be sitting around kitchen tables and sofas learning about how to get involved in their city from politicians/advocacy groups/other citizens/etc. It's called Turnout Toronto. The purpose is to educate on the opportunities to get involved (e.g. working on a political campaign, volunteer with elections Toronto, become a member of Better Budget TO, etc), which hopefully leads to things like higher voter turnout, civic participation and love for TO. I think we can debate five ways to Sunday on what the city needs but we'd all agree that you can never have enough love.

Reclaiming Citizenship, Rejecting Double Punishment: Deepan Budlakoti speaking tour

Wednesday January 15, 7 - 9 p.m.
OISE room 2211 (252 Bloor St. West), University of Toronto

Deepan Budlakoti is an Ottawa-born construction worker and activist who, in 2010, was stripped of his citizenship by the Canadian government. He is now a stateless person pitted in an incredible battle against the Conservative government over his entitlement to citizenship. The government is attempting to deport him to his parents’ homeland, India, a country where he has never lived and does not have citizenship. See more info about his story here: www.justicefordeepan.org. Deepan is currently traveling across Canada to tell his story and seek support. He will be speaking about his experiences as a young man in criminal prison, in immigration detention, and his current conditions as a stateless person. His struggle connects to issues of criminalization, racial profiling, prisons, immigration detention and, more broadly, questions of identity, belonging and borders. Who is entitled to Canadian citizenship? Who is excluded and how are exclusions justified? Who is subject to deportation and double punishment?

Peace & prosperity, not war & austerity
2014 Convention of the Canadian Peace Alliance

Fri. - Sun, January 17 - 19
Ryerson University

As Stephen Harper continues to pour untold billions into wars abroad and militarism at home, we would like to propose some real alternatives to the pro-war agenda. To that end, this convention will be the formal re-launch of our centre-piece campaign: Peace & prosperity, not war & austerity. Instead of committing $490 billion to military spending over the next 20 years - as the Harper government has done in its Canada First Defence Strategy - we propose to redirect those resources to health care, education, child care, good green jobs, anti-poverty initiatives, and climate justice. Over three days of panel discussions, plenary meetings, and workshops, the convention will discuss how to raise these issues in your community, set up a local campaign, and build support among the wider public.
Friday night: What would you do with $490 billion? Alternatives to war, militarism and austerity. Sat. and Sun. workshops

Arctic Defenders

Fri, Jan 17, 9 p.m.
Sun, Jan 19, 12:30 p.m.
Tue, Jan 21, 6:30 p.m.
Wed, Jan 22, 8:45 p.m.
Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, 506 Bloor W (at Bathurst)

Award-winning director John Walker has a long history of documenting the Canadian experience, and in Arctic Defendershe charts the remarkable story of how Canada’s newest territory, Nunavut, was created. It’s an amazing story that reveals many discoveries and developments that have never been discussed in the media. The battle began in 1968 with a young Inuit man who had a grand dream to reclaim land so the Inuit could have governance of their own territory. Along with a small group of Inuit radicals, a long and difficult confrontation ensued with a government that was reluctant to relax their sovereignty in the North. Thirty-one years later however, their dream finally came true with the creation and recognition of Nunavut—the largest territorial land re-visioning to ever take place. It’s an amazing testament of how perseverance and unwavering tenacity by even a small group of individuals can help re-build a country’s modern day identity.

Jaguar Chocolate Making Workshop

Saturday, January 18, 2 - 6 p.m.
1131 St. Clair West

Join ChocoSol’s Founder, Michael Sacco, for a 4 hour hands-on jaguar chocolate making workshop. Attendees will grind, mold, and temper jaguar chocolate, and learn about the ingredient process. Not only are the forest gardens habitat for fauna like the jaguar, they provide ways for indigenous communities to create safety belts of communal use around natural areas. This is beyond conservation, and is rooted in millennia of ecological and spiritual stewardship. Today, ChocoSol is proud to be part of a small cadre of chocolatiers, chefs, farmers, and artisans participating in the regeneration of the jaguar cacao, both through seedling planting and intercultural encounter, dialogue, and exchange, as well as through recipe development and intercultural learning.
$50 per person (cash please). A minimum of 5 people are needed. Maximum 15. Attendees also have the opportunity to purchase jaguar chocolate at a reduced price.
