Poor People's History of East Downtown Toronto
For close to two centuries East Downtown Toronto has welcomed the unemployed, homeless and working poor. Infrastructures to support the unemployed, some of which date back to the establishment of Toronto first poor house to the 1830s, are now being threatened and dismantled by the city to make room for Toronto's more affluent residents. Where will the unemployed, homeless, and poor residents go? The tour explores how Toronto's "skid row" came to be established in East Downtown Toronto. What has been the relationship of Toronto poor with Toronto wealthy residents over the last one-seventy-years? What happened to the slums of Cabbagetown and how are they related to Regent Park, Canada's largest social housing complex? There is also long history organizing and militant resistance in East Downtown Toronto by the unemployed and the homeless dating back to the 1890s. How are these struggles connected to later unemployed battles of the 1930s and 1990s? This walking tour is led by Gaetan Heroux, who is a member of OCAP, a long time organizer in the neighborhood, and a people's historian. 27 min. video

How to Avoid a Fukushima Disaster in Ontario

Tuesday March 11
7 p.m. – Anthony Wilson, Layah Jane and Brian MacMilllan, singer-songwriters
7:30 p.m. – Jack Gibbons, advocate for a nuclear-free Ontario
The Ossington: 61 Ossington (just north of Queen)
Free

On March 11, 2011, the world experienced its worst nuclear power disaster to date. Triggered by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake, the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear disaster revealed nuclear power’s vulnerability and danger. Three years later more than 100,000 people are still displaced, likely never to return to their homes, and 300 tonnes of radioactive water stream into the Pacific Ocean daily while technicians gingerly remove the used fuel rods from elevated pools before another earth quake topples the damaged structure. On the anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear catastrophe, join musicians and advocates as we mourn, learn and organize how to avoid a similar fate here in Ontario.

Did you know there are 18 working nuclear power reactors in Ontario? And because they’re all old, the province is moving forward with rebuilding 4 reactors at Darlington (on Lake Ontario), 4 reactors at Bruce (on Lake Huron), and extending Pickering, at huge public expense? Is it possible to power ON without these reactors? How would we do it, and would it cost more, or less?

Jack Gibbons is an economist and the Chair of the Ontario Clean Air Alliance. Because of his skillful research, advocacy and leadership, the province of Ontario phased out coal. Now he’s turning his attention to the phase out of ON’s nuclear stations. http://www.cleanairalliance.org/

Anthony Rankin Wilson, eco-psychotherapist and singer-songwriter, sings of loss and wonder, and shares the folk stage with his soulful daughter, singer-songwriter Layah Jane, and his friend and producer, the multi-talented musician, Brian MacMillan.

dirt! The Movie A story with heart and soil.

Tues. March 11, 6:15 – 8:15 pm
Runnymede Library - 2178 Bloor Street West (one block east of Runnymede on the north side of Bloor)
DIRT!, The Movie, directed and produced by Bill Benenson and Gene Rosow, tells the story of Earth’s most valuable and underappreciated source of fertility – from its miraculous beginning to its crippling degradation.
DIRT! – narrated by Jamie Lee Curtis – brings to life the environmental, economic, social and political impact that soil has.
DIRT! is simply a movie about dirt and it teaches how intimately linked humans are to dirt. The movie is a call to action.

The Fight for the Minimum Wage and the Lessons of Seattle

Tuesday, March 11, 7 - 9 p.m.
Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham (Bloor and Bathurst)
In the ongoing struggle for a living minimum wage in Ontario, we have lots to learn from experiences taken from other cities and comrades. One of the most successful has been the stunning achievement in Seattle WA. The campaign around the minimum wage in Seattle has shown how the power of street politics can be integrated with socialist electoral politics to mobilize people and get things done. The Occupy movement didn’t just produce community and union activists, it brought to the fore organizations like Socialist Alternative and their Council candidate Kshama Sawant. In the November Council election, Sawant took on a well known Democratic Party incumbent to win the seat, getting 93,000 votes city wide. The main focus of her election campaign was the demand for the $15 minimum wage. Two weeks later in the Seattle community of Seatac, people voted through a referendum (proposition 1) to support the $15 proposal. There are lessons to be learned for the left in Toronto, especially in the area of orienting towards electoral politics.

The Churchill Debate on Parliamentary Democracy with a keynote by the Hon. Michael Chong, MP

Tues., March 11, 2014 at 7:30 pm
Music Room, Hart House, U of T
Michael Chong has put forward the Reform Act, which is expected to go to second reading in either May or June. This is a very important act, supported by Elizabeth May of the Green Party and many other members from every federal party. This act will be debated by four of Canada’s top university debaters. Should Parliament pass the Reform Act, a bill that would strengthen the power of backbench MPs, weaken the power of party leaders, and empower local riding associations? The debate will be followed by a keynote speech by the Hon. Michael Chong, MP for Wellington—Halton Hills and author of the proposed Reform Act. Free

MP Michael Chong on his private members bill – the Reform Act

Wed. March 12, 7 p.m.
Ralph Thornton Center, 765 Queen Street E.
Last December Michael Chong, the MP for Wellington-Halton Hills, tabled a private members bill called the Reform Act 2013. It contains measures to reduce the centralized control of members of parliament by party leaders. Chong has begun speaking to audiences about his Reform Act, to increase public awareness of it and further debate. This bill is something which people interested in Democratic reform in Canada should be very interested in. This interest should cross party lines.
