What are the pros and cons of expanding the Island Airport?
with Paul Bedford

Mon. March 24, 7 - 9 p.m.
Duke of York Pub, 39 Prince Arthur Ave. (Spadina subway)
Toronto is engaged in a passionate debate over its support of an expanded Toronto Island Airport. Citizens of our fair city are posting lawn signs in support, or against the proposed changes. Porter has plans to increase the airport runway length and operate Canadian jets that are comparable in noise to their current turbo props. Proponents claim this would continue the economic growth in the downtown core and would make Toronto a more attractive hub for travelers by reducing the time it takes to fly in and out of the city's core. Opponents would like to maintain the current state of the airport citing environmental reasons and unwanted impacts to Toronto’s waterfront should the expansion occur. Paul Bedford, Toronto's former Chief Planner, Member of the Board of Directors of Metrolinx, and currently a member of the Waterfront Toronto Design Review Panel will take us through some of the pros and cons of an expanded airport.

Yarmouk Camp: Stop the Lies, End the Siege

Mon. March 24, 7 p.m.
Debates room, Hart House, U of T
Suggested Donation: $10 or PWYC
Yarmouk Camp has been under seige by the Syrian regime for more than 220 days. More than 120 people have died starved to death since the blockade was tightened in July 2013. In addition to the mass starvation, the regime forces and their allies have carried out attacks on civilian areas including some buildings that were used as a shelter by those who were internally displaced making the situation unbearable for the residents of Yarmouk. Join us in a fundraising evening of solidarity with the Palestinian-Syrians in Yarmouk camp. We will be screening a comedy sketch made by Hassan Hassan, actor and well-loved Syrian-Palestinian from the heart of Yarmouk camp. We will also be featuring poetry and music performances in both Arabic and English including works by Mahmoud Darwish, Sheikh Imam and Sameeh Shoukair.
All donations from this night will go to those in need in Yarmouk refugee camp.

Confronting Injustice: Social Activism in the Age of Individualism - book launch

Monday, March 24th, 6:30pm
OISE, Room 2214, 252 Bloor Street West (St. George subway)
According to recent estimates 400,000 people die every year as a result of human-made global warming. The UN projects that 3 billion additional people may be pushed into extreme poverty by 2050 because of environmental destruction. The scale of the problems we face should make it clear that individualist, lifestyle-centric approaches to activism will not suffice. We need to change the structures of our social system, not our light bulbs. A world plagued by a chronic crisis of inequality now finds itself faced with an acute environmental crisis. Umair Muhammad's "Confronting Injustice" seeks to expose the roots of these crises, and outlines an approach to activism which transcends the hopeless individualism of our time.

Tar Sands Crude Shipping on the Great Lakes? - Webinar

Thur. March 27, 1 - 2 p.m.
From your computer
Should the Great Lakes become a thoroughfare for tar sands crude oil? The opening of the shipping locks along the St. Lawrence Seaway and Sault St. Marie are an annual rite of spring around the Great Lakes. But as communities from Montreal to Duluth prepare for the start of another Great Lakes shipping season, our region faces a critical choice. Plans are in the works to dramatically increase the flow of tar sands crude to the Midwest, and a tar sands shipping route has already been mapped across the waters of the Great Lakes.

Capitalism on the Edge

Thursday, March 27, 7pm
Tranzac, 292 Brunswick (just south of Bloor)
Join us in celebrating the release of Mostafa Henaway's booklet Capitalism on the Edge and an evening of strategizing and reflection on the economic crisis and our responses.
Capitalism on the edge: The crisis that came and the crisis yet to come is an essay examining the changing nature of Canadian capitalism in the midst of the current global economic crisis. This text fundamentally challenges the ongoing claim by the Canadian political and economic elite that Canada has fared well during the financial crisis. Instead, there are warning signs that the Canadian economy is teetering on the edge of its own ruinous financial crisis: the country is facing unprecedented concentrations of extreme wealth alongside growing poverty rates, while our economy is increasingly dependent on resource-driven capitalism, ongoing colonialism and precarious low-wage work. Beyond economics that enforce growing wealth disparities, Conservatives continue to attack social rights, public institutions, labour unions, and indigenous people.
Released by Howl! Arts Collective -- a Montreal-based collective of cultural workers, artists and activists working for social justice via artistic expression.

Burning Water

Friday, March 28, 7 p.m.
Art Gallery of Ontario, Jackman Hall, 317 Dundas Street West
In the Rosebud River valley, an hour east of Calgary, the water in many homes can be lit on fire. Everyone agrees there’s gas in the water. Few agree on why. At Fiona Lauridsen’s farm, just outside the hamlet of Rosebud, Fiona and her family got skin burns in the shower. Fiona claims that EnCana, Canada’s largest natural gas company, contaminated the aquifer by drilling (fracking) for coal bed methane, a new source of natural gas extraction that often uses chemicals for drilling. Yet in the hamlet, where the Rosebud Theatre is a popular tourist attraction, most residents refuse to even talk about burning water, for fear of harming the tourist industry. A government minister blamed the contamination on improper well maintenance on the part of the farmer. Other scientists disagree, and Fiona thinks the government is deflecting attention away from the negative consequences of an energy boom that’s bringing record profits to the province. As gas wells sprout up across North America, and all around Rosebud, the Lauridsen family struggles to stay together and remain part of their community, at the same time confronting the dark truth of what may be happening beneath the surface.

Bread and Roses: The 1912 Textile Strike in Lawrence, Massachussets
Fundraising Dinner and Talk with Christine Beckermann

Saturday March 29, 6 pm Dinner • 7 pm Talk
Call for location: 647.393.3096
On January 1st, 1912, a Massachussets state law went into effect reducing the hours of work for women and children, from 56 to 54 hours a week. Workers welcomed the reduction, but only if it came with no cut in pay. On January 11th, Polish women weavers noticed their pay cut by 32 cents (which would deprive them of three loaves of bread. They shut their looms and marched to all the other factories in Lawrence shouting “Short pay! Short pay!”. This sparked a two-month long strike that became known as the ‘Bread and Roses’ strike, and involved 15,000 textile workers from 30 different countries, speaking 45 languages. Join us for this presentation and discussion on the significance of this strike and the lessons it holds for today’s struggles.
Suggested donation $7-15 (sliding scale)
