Toronto City Council pushes back against Big Oil and Line 9
The council voted 28 to 4 to ask the Province of Ontario to "conduct a comprehensive environmental assessment of the Enbridge Line 9B application" -- a project to run diluted tar sands oil ("dilbit") through an aging pipeline "Line 9" that cuts across the city. The vote, on a motion by Councillor Mike Layton, was a slap in the face of Canada's federal government, whose National Energy Board (NEB) had approved the project March 6 in a decision aimed at shutting down controversy over the troubled project.

Cars Kill
Toronto Public Health released a report today proving that Toronto’s air pollution continues causing high levels of premature death and hospitalization. The report concludes that each year air pollution causes 1,300 premature deaths and 3,550 hospitalizations in Toronto. Motor vehicle pollution alone is responsible for 280 people dying and 1,090 people ending up in hospitals. Whaaaaaaaaa? Read that again - 280 deaths in Toronto each year due to motor vehicles. WTF!

It's time for a bigger recall of a seriously defective product: The Car.
Cars kill 1.5 million people every year, and injure over 78 million people every year. And we're complaining about ignition switches? Since we can't recall every car all at once and redesign the entire country, there are at least things we can do to make it less bad. Significantly reduce speed limits. Make drivers pay the full cost of infrastructure construction and maintenance through the gas tax. Build the cost of medical care for those millions of injured by cars into the price of gas. Invest in walkable cities and alternative forms of transport.

Train travel in Canada is running off the rails
By Elizabeth May
Passenger rail in Canada is in crisis. “It is a feeble excuse to abandon passenger rail claiming our geography works against it. Why then do we maintain, at public expense, a vast highway system? Why do cars and trucks travel for free on our highways, when rail is stigmatized for requiring subsidies to operate? It's time to get Canada's rail, for freight and people, back on track.”

2 Earthday Films: Tar and Stand

Tues. April 22, 7 p.m.
Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) in the Jackman Hall 317 Dundas Street West
- STAND Synopsis: Enbridge Inc, a Calgary-based oil and gas company has proposed the construction of a 1,170 km pipeline running from Alberta’s tar sands to Kitimat on British Columbia’s west coast. Before reaching the open ocean, these tankers would first need to pass through some of the most dangerous navigable waters in the world―the narrow inlets of the Great Bear Rainforest. http://standfilm.com/
- TAR Synopsis: Featuring breathtaking imagery of Western Canada in the heart of winter; Tar offers a firsthand look at the pristine ecology put at risk by a highly controversial project to transport Oilsands crude oil to Asian markets. http://www.tarfilm.com/
Following the film we will be having a panel discussion and Q&A with Panellists:
- Anthony Bonello - Filmmaker of STAND
- Greg Francis - Filmmaker of TAR
- Sabrina Bowman - Climate Campaign Organizer, Environmental Defence

Can a Lac Mégantic Rail Tragedy Happen in Toronto?

Thur. April 24, 7 pm
Danforth Mennonite Church, 2174 Danforth Ave. (East of Woodbine)
Guest speaker: Mary Fragedakis, City Councillor
Last July, a tanker train carrying inflammable "Bakken oil" exploded in Lac Megantic, Quebec in the middle of the night, killing 47 residents. This train travelled right through Toronto on the CP Rail line on its way to Lac Megantic. Similar trains roll through our city many times each day. Could such an explosion happen right here, in our city? Come to an open discussion. Hear the facts and speak your mind.

Yet former UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali says, "the Rwandan genocide was 100 percent American responsibility." Where lies the truth? Rally Against the Unfair Elections Act

Saturday, April 26, 1 pm
Dundas Square (Yonge and Dundas)
Bill C-23, the ironically named “Fair Elections” Act is a bill that will dangerously change how, and if, some Canadians can participate in our democracy. If passed, this act will see US style voter suppression imposed on Canadians and is clearly targeted youth and students, poor people, seniors, Aboriginal people and other marginalized groups. The “Fair Elections Act” eliminates key provisions of our current election system – including vouching and voter ID cards – which could deprive as many as 520,000 Canadians of their right to vote. The Act will also muzzle Elections Canada, cancelling voter education and engagement programs like Student Vote. This event is being organized by a coalition of groups including the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario and the Council of Canadians.
