A Jumble of Paths: a reading
Fri. June 13, 5 - 6:30 p.m.
Berkeley Theatre, 26 Berkeley St. Free.
For nearly a decade Salverson (playwright and drama professor) and van Wyck (writer and professor of communication studies) were travellers together on the highway of the atom. What emerged was a dialog between disciplines. Together they explore the far-reaching implications of Canada’s hidden role in one of history’s most destructive acts of war: a subarctic mine in the Northwest Territories provided Canadian uranium for the bombs detonated over Japan in August 1945. The two authors offer a collaborative reading of drafts, field notes and their books The Highway of the Atom (van Wyck) and Lines of Flight: an atomic memoir (Salverson). Q&A moderated by John O’Brian.

Responding to the Nuclear Present I
Sat. June 14, 5 - 6:30 p.m.
Berkeley Theatre, 26 Berkeley St. Free.
Professors Jacobs and Broderick have been working for the last 5 years on the Global Hibakusha Project, assessing the cultural and social effects of radiation exposures on communities, families and individuals. This work has led them to conduct oral histories in radiation affected communities around the world, primarily nuclear weapon testing sites, nuclear production sites, and nuclear power plant accident sites. This work has also involved facilitating the networking of third generation hibakusha youth around the world via Web 2.0 technologies and the training of hibakusha youth to gather oral histories in their own communities. These efforts support the inheritance and maintenance of nuclear history across generations.

Responding to the Nuclear Present II
Sun. June 15, 11:30 - 1 p.m.
Berkeley Theatre, 26 Berkeley St. Free.
With Gordon Edwards and Robert del Tredici, moderated by Blake Edwards
This session will feature a mathematician and a photographer – both of whom have been working on nuclear issues for over 30 years – addressing how they take measure of the contemporary nuclear predicament. How we respond to and take measure of the nuclear present is a staggeringly difficult contemporary problem. As the global nuclear industry proliferates – its advocates and oversight bodies pressing ahead with enthusiastic plans to expand nuclear energy production – there remain pressing and largely unaddressed questions around the accelerated mining of uranium and its wastes, decontamination and decommissioning of nuclear infrastructure dating back nearly seventy years, and the transportation, burial and long-term security of highly radioactive spent fuel and other radio toxic materials that must be isolated from the environment for unprecedented timescales.

Film: Miners Shot Down
Sunday, June 15, 2 pm
Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham (at Bloor)
First public screening in Canada of film by Rehad Desai. In August 2012, workers at one of South Africa's biggest platinum mines at Marikana, began a wildcat strike for better wages. Six days into the strike, the police used live ammunition to brutally suppress it, killing 34 and injuring many more. This moving documentary follows the strike from day one, showing the courageous but isolated fight waged by a group of low-paid workers against the combined forces of the state, big business and co-opted allies.

Ottawa Convergence to End Immigration Detention
Sun. June 15
Over the last year, the courageous strike by nearly 200 migrants in Lindsay's max-security jail pushed immigration detention on the national agenda. Over the next few weeks, we will be releasing further damning evidence of arbitrariness and unfairness, culminating in a march to CBSA Headquarters in Ottawa on June 15th. We are coordinating with immigration detainees in Lindsay will also be taking action on the inside with us!
