A healthy democracy isn’t about voting every four years. It’s about participating in your community, creating change, connecting with your elected officials to let them know what you expect of them. And working with and supporting groups like TEA (Toronto Environmental Alliance) and OCAA (Ontario Clean Air Alliance) and all the groups below that organize and push the green agenda politically and socially.

Mon. - Wed. November 5, 2 pm - 7 pm
The Richmond, 477 Richmond St W.
This exhibit brings together photographs of people and places threatened by Energy East – the largest proposed tar sands pipeline in the world. From wetlands to whales, forests to fish, lakes to rivers, the Energy East pipeline plan threatens some of Canada’s most pristine wilderness and wildlife. This exhibit turns the lens on the exquisite landscapes put at risk by the pipeline, and it shines the light on the concerns of people, from farmers to fishermen, who live along the pipeline’s proposed route.

Unlearning the Great War's Lessons
Monday November 3, 7 p.m.
Gardiner Museum, 111 Queen’s Park
Award-winning scholar and Queen's University Professor Ana Siljak will discuss the political, economic, and cultural lessons learned by a chastened West in the aftermath of last century's wars - and whether those lessons are increasingly forgotten in today's turmoil. It’s axiomatic among many journalists and commentators that we're regressing into Cold War geopolitics. But does today's political and economic climate actually more resemble the world prior to 1914? Worldwide conflict among the great powers, the rise of a new Gilded Age in economics, the growth of terrorism, the faith in science and technology - these are just some of the similarities between our current situation and the years leading up to World War I.

Holocaust Education Week
Monday Nov 3, 6:30pm – 8:30pm
William Doo Auditorium, 45 Willcocks St (corner Willcocks St & Spadina Ave)
During the years of the Asia-Pacific War, the Imperial Japanese Army mobilized more than 200,000 women from across Asia into a military sexual system. Those women coming from distinct culture, identity, heritage, and memory were all euphemistically referred to as "Comfort Women". Their ongoing struggle has brought them together in solidarity for their rights as women, as human beings. Discuss approaches to move towards peace and reconciliation with speakers who have been engaged in supporting survivors of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery through art, education, and activism etc.

Joyeux Noel
116 min, 2005
Friday, November 7, 7 p.m.
OISE, 252 Bloor Street West, Room 5-280 at the St. George Subway Station.
Everyone welcome. $4 donation requested.
In 1914, the bloodiest war ever to that point in human history was well under way. However, on Christmas Eve, along the Western Front an informal, and unauthorized truce occurred. Front-line soldiers from both sides in the conflict peacefully met in No Man's Land to share a precious pause in the carnage, and exhibited a fleeting brotherhood. This film dramatizes one such convergence as French, Scottish and German combatants partake in the unique event, aware that their superiors will not tolerate it. Ben Rostoker, a Socialist Action student activist at U of Toronto will lead off the discussion with a presentation marking the 100th anniversary of the imperialist First World War.

The Secret Trial 5
Fri. Nov. 7, 9, 10, 12 & 13, 6:30 p.m.
Bloor-Hot Docs Cinema (Bloor and Bathurst)
Imagine spending years in prison without being charged with a crime or knowing exactly what you’re accused of. A film about the human impact of the “War on Terror,” this is a sobering examination of the Canadian government’s use of security certificates, a tool that allows for indefinite detention without charges, based on evidence not revealed to the accused or their lawyers. Over the last decade, this rare and highly controversial device has been used to detain five men for nearly 30 years combined. To date, none of them have been charged with a crime or have seen the evidence against them. Through the experience of the detainees and their families, the film raises poignant questions about the balance between security and liberty. Filmmakers and special guests will participate in Q&As following all screenings.

Citizen Mark
November 7-13, 7 pm
Big Picture Cinema, 1035 Gerrard St. E.
A documentary about famed marijuana legalization activist, Marc Emery, the self-styled 'Prince of Pot'. In 2005 Emery was arrested by the U.S. DEA, charged with trafficking pot seeds over the Internet and convicted of international drug trafficking. A Canadian citizen, Emery was extradited to the U.S. to serve five years in federal prison. In Canada at that time, the penalty for selling marijuana seeds was a fine. But Emery's incarceration, this film suggests, does not constitute a simple miscarriage of justice. It rather fulfills Emery's complex, often narcissistic vision of himself as a fierce libertarian and quasi-biblical prophet whose destiny is to defeat government. Citizen Marc wittily questions what it means to be a citizen in a post-identity, post-equality North America.
