David Suzuki writes letter to grandson arrested at Kinder Morgan protest on Burnaby Mountain
"He is a role model for young people today, inspiring them to get involved in issues of their future," Suzuki writes of his grandson, who was arrested on Thursday. .. "The world is on a collision course with the things that keep us alive and healthy - the air, water, soil and variety of life. Corporations, especially those with head offices in some other part of the country or the world care little for the interests of local ecosystems or communities, except in so far as they interfere with the drive to maximize profit for shareholders… They have no obligation to protect local ecosystems or local communities. Their sole goal is to make as much money as they can get away with," Suzuki added.

Hungry for Action? Join the Fast
What is Fast for the Climate? People from all walks of life are fasting to stand in solidarity with vulnerable communities most affected by dangerous climate impacts. By choosing not to eat on the first day of every month, the growing movement of fasters - including many youth groups, environmentalists and faith communities - is calling for government leaders to act to confront the climate crisis. The opening day of COP20 Lima is expected to be the biggest climate fast in history. Latin American and international NGOs from environmental, development and climate justice networks, a broad range of youth activists, negotiators from across negotiating blocks and other high-profile people in the UN climate talks will join the fast. Many people are hungry for action.

Mon. Nov. 24, 7 - 9 p.m.
Metro Hall (King and John St.), Rm. 310
Did you know Ontario plans to rebuild 10 of our aging nuclear reactors, locking us into nuclear for another 4 or more decades? This will cost taxpayers upwards of $60 billion, to say nothing of the radioactive waste and risk of catastrophic accident on one of our Great Lakes. Did anyone ever ask you if you'd rather your $$ go to a renewable future? Conservation, water power, wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, biogas - the options are endless, more affordable, and infinitely safer. Join Angela Bischoff and Jack Gibbons of the Ontario Clean Air Alliance to find out more, ask questions, and learn how you can get involved. Free.

We Live Here! Yes In Our Backyards!
Mon. Nov. 24, 2 pm
Lillian H. Smith Branch - Toronto Public Library, 239 College St.
The targeting of people who use drugs is often used as a tool to gentrify and push out people who have historically lived in their neighbourhoods. Labeling all poor people, homelesss people, people who access shelters and methadone clinics, as "addicits" and "criminals" as a way to drum up fear. Folks are now meant to feel unwanted and are pushed out of the "changing" neighbourhood. Their homes, services and the places they congregate, torn down, "redeveloped", pushed, policed and priced out. This event is about the many people who live in poverty, who use drugs or don't use drugs who have a right to live here, free from stigma and discrimination. Yes in our backyards!! We will be discussing the impact of gentrification, the targeting of drug users and how we can combat the not in my backyard mentality, organize and discuss strategies that have worked to save these contested spaces.
TTC will be available, this space is wheelchair accessible.

Truth and Toward Reconciliation: Frontrunners: Niigaanibatowaad
Screening of the story of the 1967 Pan-Am Games
Tues. Nov. 25, 7 p.m.
Temple Sinai, 210 Wilson Ave.
The National Social Action Committee of the Canadian Council of Reform Judaism in partnership with Temple Sinai is pleased to present this film screening. This presentation reveals the hidden story of the Aboriginal runners who carried the torch to the 1967 Pan-American Games in Winnipeg. Denied access to the stadium at that time, in 1999 the surviving runners received an apology from the province and a standing ovation from the crowd when Winnipeg hosted once more. Laura Robinson the playwright, worked closely with surviving frontrunners to create a script that begins when they were boys in residential school. The playwright, along with two members of the original frontrunners will be featured as guest speakers. With the 2015 Pan-Am Games just around the corner, this screening offers an important perspective on past sports events and some little known Canadian history. Free.

Safe Space Now! Shelter and Housing for All! Rally, Meal and Action
Tuesday, November 25, noon
George Hislop Park north end: Charles St (between Yonge and Church)
Join the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty and allies on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to fight for:
-24 Hour women and trans drop-ins NOW
-Open Shelters: real beds, not flex beds!
-Safe, affordable, and accessible HOUSING FOR ALL!
We have a crisis of homelessness in the City of Toronto. The number of people in shelters is exploding. As we head into colder weather, we are faced once again with the reality of shelters being over-capacity, and with the lack of safe space at night. Meanwhile affordable housing in Toronto is abysmal - close to 90 000 households remain on the wait-list for social housing, while private market rents skyrocket and overall vacancies are at 1.7%. Join us to take direct action and make sure that all levels of government act now to meet the most basic need for people's lives: access to safe space, shelter and housing.

Endless War? The Middle East and Canada's New Militarism
Thursday, November 27, 7 pm
Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham St. (Bathurst and Bloor)
In 2003, the U.S. and its allies invaded Iraq on false pretenses and left the country in ruins almost a decade later, creating the conditions for ISIL’s ascension in the region. Now the U.S. is spearheading a campaign to return to Iraq and enter Syria to fight off ISIL. Canada is (again) intervening in the Middle East with fighter jets, logistics, forward bases, and other supports. This is another escalation in the 'new militarism' that is dominating Canadian foreign policy and increasingly, society. Can the intervention succeed even on its own militarist terms? What are the alternatives for the anti-war movement? With Speakers:
Sabah Alnasseri, Professor of Political Science, York University
Judy Deutsch, Science for Peace, Canadian Dimension Magazine
Tyler Shipley, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Humber College
Sardar Saadi, PhD Student at UofT, Toronto-based activist
Free. The space is accessible by mobile ramp upon request in advance. Washrooms are not accessible.

Renewing The Left
Friday, November 28, 7 - 9 pm
Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham (near Bloor and Bathurst)
With Speakers:
Alan Sears, author of The Next New Left, member of Toronto New Socialists
Patti Dalton, London Common Front & President of London and District Labour Council
Umair Muhammad, author of Confronting Injustice, Jane-Finch Against Poverty
Chris Ramsaroop, activist with Justicia for Migrant Workers
Why is the left not growing at a time of naked attacks on workers, the poor, migrants, indigenous people, young people and women? Democracy, even in its limited official form, is being undermined. Imperialist warfare is on the rise. Things are bad and getting worse. We need a renewed left, yet that is not what we see around us. In his book, The Next New Left, Alan Sears makes the case that lefts require renewal because of dramatic changes in life, work and political projects that eliminate old sites of organizing and forms of collectivity. Thirty years of neo-liberal restructuring have dramatically transformed workplaces, communities and government policies. The left needs to orient itself to this terrain, through and open-ended and experimental method and a more integrative ecological, anti-racist, feminist, anti-colonial and queer class politics. This panel of activists from a variety of movements will critically assess these arguments in developing strategies for left renewal. Free.

Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham St. (at Bloor)
Join contributors, an editor, and Line 9 activists for a celebration of A Line in the Tar Sands: Struggles for Environmental Justice. Tar sands "development" comes with an enormous environmental and human cost. But tar sands opponents -- fighting a powerful international industry -- are likened to terrorists; government environmental scientists are muzzled; and public hearings are concealed and rushed. Yet, despite the formidable political and economic power behind the tar sands, many opponents are actively building international networks of resistance, challenging pipeline plans while resisting threats to indigenous sovereignty and democratic participation.
