9 weirdest things about this RCMP intelligence report on the "anti-petroleum movement"
So we're a well-financed anti-Canadian petroleum movement, according to the RCMP. And we consist of peaceful activists, militants and violent extremists who are opposed to society's reliance on fossil fuels which are reportedly causing global warming, though apparently the tarsands are an insignificant contributor. I'm not making this up - that's the RCMP report! Just in time for Bill C-51.

Why Become A Climate Vegan
The Earth is heading for catastrophic climate change without radical shifts in human behaviour. Two key causes of global warming are fossil fuel use and “meat and dairy” consumption. We need to phase out fossil fuels and “meat and dairy” to avoid tipping points and in order to return to a stable energy balance which requires we reduce greenhouse gas concentrations to below 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide.

Monsoon
Bloor Hot Docs Cinema - Bloor and Bathurst
March 23 - 30
Award-winning filmmaker Sturla Gunnarsson's visually stunning documentary Monsoon is an exploration of chaos, creation and faith. Filmed across the Indian sub-continent, Monsoon charts the huge system’s annual journey from the southern state of Kerala to India's north-eastern state of Meghalaya, as it surges toward and gradually engulfs every region of the country. While the filmmakers document this powerful force of nature, they meet a remarkable group of individuals along the way whose lives are entwined by the phenomenon that some call 'the soul of India.' Monsoon is a cinematic journey into the terrain where nature, science, belief and wonder converge in one of the most astonishing landscapes on earth.

Merchants of Doubt
Bloor Hot Docs Cinema - Bloor and Bathurst
March 23, 25, 26, 31 and April 2
Inspired by the acclaimed book by Naomi Oreskes and Erik M. Conway, Merchants of Doubt takes audiences on a satirically illuminating ride into the heart of conjuring American spin. Filmmaker Robert Kenner (Food, Inc.) lifts the curtain on the secretive group of highly charismatic, silver-tongued pundits-for-hire who stake claims contrary to scientific consensus. Presenting themselves in the media as experts, they are paid by corporations, think tanks and other special interests to cast doubt and delay governmental action on everything from cigarettes to pharmaceuticals and, most recently, climate change. Kenner examines the birth of the doubt industry, how it has succeeded for decades, and why we need to fight back.

Greece: austerity and resistance after Syriza's election
Monday March 23, 7 pm
United Steelworkers Hall, 25 Cecil St.
Greece is at the sharp end of the global economic crisis, and years of austerity measures have only brought more suffering and the rise of fascism. But the Greek people have also fought back, including more than 30 general strikes and a clear rejection of austerity at the recent elections. The left alternative party, SYRIZA, was elected on a mandate to challenge austerity, but have already started to backtrack, causing splits among their ranks. What can we learn from Greece about the economic crisis, austerity and resistance? What are people in Greece doing to fight austerity and to push SYRIZA to the left? Join a public forum to discuss austerity and resistance after Syriza's election. Speakers:
-Costas Pittas, Greek activist speaking from Athens via skype
-Pam Frache, Toronto socialist

The Inspection House: An Impertinent Field Guide to Modern Surveillance - Book Launch
Tues. March 24, 7 - 9 p.m.
Handlebar, 159 Augusta
Someone you can't see is watching you. That idea, long the stuff of feverish dystopian fantasy, is now an unremarkable statement of fact, true in most public places, and true in many that used to be private. Yet most of us being watched have no idea how this vast, casual surveillance came to be, or how it works. The Inspection House is a remedy for our collective incomprehension of the panopticon, built in our name, that we all now inhabit.

Governing Toronto: Bringing back the city that worked
Book signing with Author Alan Medway
Wednesday, March 25, 1 - 2:3- p.m.
Coxwell Lobby, Toronto East General Hospital, 825 Coxwell Avenue
In stark contrast to the dysfunctional megacity of today, the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto was a city that worked. Some refer to this period from 1954 to 1998 as Toronto’s “Golden Age.” Former mayor of Toronto's East York borough and Minister of State for Housing Alan Redway has published a new book that chronicles the city's growth and demonstrates, through the success of other metropolitan cities, that Toronto must de-amalgamate to survive.

Journey of an Unrepentant Socialist
Book Launch with author Brewster Kneen
Fri. March 27, 7 - 9 p.m.
Trinity-St. Paul’s Church, 427 Bloor Street West
Kneen is best known in Canada and around the world as an analyst of the industrial food system and corporate capitalism’s strategies of control, which include genetic engineering and patenting of seeds. After half a dozen books on food systems, genetic engineering, corporate control, and rights, in this book he reflects more on his own process. This is his “political/theological autobiography”. It is an abbreviated life-story, with a focus on the 1950s and ‘60s, when he was active in the New Left and the peace and Civil Rights movements in North America, and the Prague-based Christian Peace Conference. His story also includes his subsequent life as a farmer and researcher and writer in Canada.

Sexual Assault on Campus: Activism and Accountability at UofT and Beyond
Fri. March 27, 6 - 9 p.m.
William Doo Auditorium, New College, 45 Willcocks Street, U of T
In this Community Knowledge Alliance (CKA) event, a group engaged in sexual assault issues on campus will provoke us to think meaningfully about what can be done, not just on campus, but collectively among campuses and community organizations. There is a rising collective movement driven by student unions to address sexual violence on university campuses, and university administrations’ barely visible responses to these growing concerns have been front page news in Canadian newspapers. While therapeutic, gender and safety offices abound on university campuses, they seem not to be effective enough resources for students. Free.
