Alternative Federal Budget 2015
By the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives
The Alternative Federal Budget 2015: Delivering the Good demonstrates that the federal government’s continued obsession with austerity and balancing the budget comes at the cost of higher household debt, fewer services, and weakened job growth. The AFB, now in its 20th year, delivers a plan that would lift 893,000 Canadians out of poverty, reduce income inequality, boost economic growth, reduce carbon emissions, and create or sustain 300,000 jobs a year, bringing Canada’s employment rate back to its pre-recession level.

Merchants of Doubt
Daily, 1:35pm, 3:50pm, 7:05pm, Carlton Cinema
Tues. Mar 31, 1:30 p.m, and Thur. Apr 2, 1 p.m. Bloor Hot Docs, Bloor and Bathurst
Must see! Filmmaker Robert Kenner (Food, Inc.) lifts the curtain on the secretive group of highly charismatic, silver-tongued pundits-for-hire who stake claims contrary to scientific consensus. Presenting themselves in the media as experts, they are paid by corporations, think tanks and other special interests to cast doubt and delay governmental action on everything from cigarettes to pharmaceuticals and, most recently, climate change. Kenner examines the birth of the doubt industry, how it has succeeded for decades, and why we need to fight back.

Unalone: The Life and Legacy of Bob Hunter
Robert Hunter Memorial Lecture: With Thomas E. Hart, Lecturer in Philosophy, Ryerson University
Wed. Aoril 1, 4:10 - 6 p.m.
Room ES 149(basement), 5 Bancroft Avenue, Earth Sciences Building, U of T
10 years after the death of Bob Hunter, many of the issues that captured his mind, body and spirit are still with us. Unfortunately. As the co-founder and first president of Greenpeace, his successes in helping to stop atmospheric nuclear testing, the butchering of the oceans’ whales and stemming the extinction of the harp seal, as well as his influence in journalism and eco-activism happened because of his passion and drive, dogged determination, and his unique mix of pragmatism and idealism. In looking back at the ideas and concepts that formed the foundation of his life, we will consider uncomfortable questions and unnerving realities about the complicated relationships between reason and knowledge, rational and political discourse, ideal and action.

The Missing 43 and #YoSoy132 and the Mexican Elections
Thursday, April 2, 7 p.m.
OISE Room 2-214, 252 Bloor St. W.
What happened to the 43 students who went missing in Southern Mexico in September of this year? The Vice News produced documentary examines the mass disappearance of the young men who were all training to teach the youth of their country, as well as the tragedy and controversy surrounding their disappearance. Yo Soy 132 was a social movement composed for the most part of Mexican university students from private and public universities, residents of Mexico, claiming supporters from about 50 cities around the world. It began as opposition to the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) candidate Enrique Peña Nieto and the Mexican media’s allegedly biased coverage of the 2012 general election. The name Yo Soy 132, Spanish for “I Am 132″, originated in an expression of solidarity with the original 131 protest’s initiators. After the two films we will hear from guest speakers Professor Richard Roman, co-author of “Continental Crucible”, and Columba González from the campaign organization WeAreAllMexico.

Becoming Great Ancestors
Great Lakes Commons
Thursday, April 2, 5 p.m.
CSI Annex - Meeting Room #4 (3rd floor), 720 Bathurst St.
In this workshop we will collectively explore the questions of: "What makes this Great Lakes Commons initiative different from most water protection and awareness efforts?" and, "How can a water-commons approach overcome many of the challenges for broad and meaningful public engagement?" If your gift is through the practice of art, research, advocacy, ceremony, or place-making -- we think this workshop will deepen your ancestral connection to restoring the commons. It will also help us do a collective re-think on how we can join and unite transformative social movements.

No Justice No Peace - Honouring Cindy Gladue
Thur. April 2, noon
Ministry Of Attorney General, 720 Bay Street
Cindy Gladue was an Indigenous mother and 36 years old when she was murdered in an Edmonton motel room 4 years ago. Last week an all white and almost all male jury decided to acquit her killer, a white Ontario man, because they believed that Cindy had consented to the violence that left an 11 cm wound in her vagina causing her to bleed to death. Cindy's death is a reminder that Indigenous women' lives and sex workers' lives are not valued in this deeply racist, sexist and misogynist society. We support the calls for an appeal and other forms of justice! Join us to express our outrage!
