“Our strategy should be not only to confront empire, but to lay siege to it. To deprive it of oxygen. To shame it. To mock it. With our art, our music, our literature, our stubbornness, our joy, our brilliance, our sheer relentlessness – and our ability to tell our own stories. Stories that are different from the ones we’re being brainwashed to believe. The corporate revolution will collapse if we refuse to buy what they are selling – their ideas, their version of history, their wars, their weapons, their notion of inevitability.” Arundhati Roy

How can progressives stop Harper this federal election?
By George Lakoff: If progressives are to win in the future, we must present a clear moral vision to the country -- a moral vision common to all progressives. It must be more than a laundry list of facts, policies, and programs. It must present a moral alternative, one traditionally American, one that lies behind everything Americans are proud of.

More plastics for Toronto Blue Bins
Starting in June 2015, Toronto residents will be able to recycle a wider range of plastic bags in the Blue Bin. Thanks to better sorting technology, and a growing plastic recycling market, Toronto will collect bags such as those for fruit, bread, milk, dry cleaning and more. This will increase the City’s diversion rate and save money.

NoJetsTO
Parkdale - High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo got NoJetsTO on the provincial radar yesterday by asking Environment Minister Glen Murray some tough questions, trying to get the provincial government to stand up for our waterfront and demand that the province enforce a Provincial EA rather than the biased study currently underway. Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImmKVGRH5aU

Glen Murray responded to her questions by saying he hasn't heard from councillors that their constituents want a provincial EA. You know what to do NoJetsTO supporters! Contact your councillor and demand that they tell Glen Murray to conduct a Provincial EA that is free from bias. http://www1.toronto.ca/City%20Of%20Toronto/Corporate%20Directory/Files/PDF/Divisions/council_offices.pdf
Councillors in Glen Murray's riding include Councillor Wong-Tam and McConnell; special attention should be made to contact them.

The Sower
Wednesday, April 22, 6:30 pm
Bloor Hot Docs (Bloor and Bathurst)
In Quebec’s Kamouraska Valley, Patrice Fortier is putting down roots at his seed company, La Société des plantes. Like a copyist in the Middle Ages, he is meticulously preserving rare and forgotten cultivars with the goal of breeding the “heirlooms of the future.” As Patrice gardens, he daydreams and transforms his harvests into art projects. The seasons come and go, his patience and care express his passion and knowledge, and his seed bank grows. His tiny storehouses of life will eventually sprout in thousands of vegetable gardens around the world. At the centre of this paean to plant biodiversity and agricultural heritage is a unique, genetically motivated seed producer.

Trick or Treaty
Friday, April 24, 7 p.m.
OISE Room 5-240, 252 Bloor W.
2014 / 84 minutes. This feature documentary by acclaimed filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin (Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance) profiles Indigenous leaders in their quest for justice as they seek to establish dialogue with the Canadian government. By tracing the history of their ancestors since the signing of Treaty No. 9, these leaders aim to raise awareness about issues vital to First Nations in Canada: respect for and protection of their lands and their natural resources, and the right to hunt and fish so that their societies can prosper. In recent years, an awareness-raising movement has been surfacing in First Nations communities. In this powerful documentary, those who refuse to surrender are given a chance to speak out.

Rage Against the System: Marxism 2015
Fri. Sat. April 24 - 25
Ryerson University, 55 Gould St. (near Dundas and Yonge)
With federal elections only months away, the Harper government is ramping up Islamophobia and attacks on civil liberties as it pushes more war and austerity. No matter what the outcome of the elections, increased racism, war, climate chaos and hardship for ordinary people are challenges the Left must tackle. There is growing resistance to disastrous energy policies and social policies. How do we fan the flames of resistance and build a Left that can provide a real alternative to disaster capitalism? Marxism 2015 will bring together social justice activists, trade unionists, students and many more to discuss ideas and strategies of resistance and revolution.
