Vision Zero
Toronto should adopt a Vision Zero policy, which would commit to achieving
zero traffic-related deaths and severe injuries on Toronto's streets by
2026. Lower driving speeds, better designed intersections, consistent
traffic enforcement, dedicated and protected space for driving, walking, and
cycling - a focus on the safety of people. These are among the strategies
already employed elsewhere to reach a goal of reducing traffic-related death
and serious injury to zero. By redesigning our roadways, we can take what
would have been a fatality and turn it into a minor collision that people
can survive.

Extreme weather ahead
As global temperatures continue to rise and the world's climate continues to
destabilize, cities around the world are experiencing more extreme and
unusual weather events including extreme temperatures, precipitation,
droughts and storms. The incidence of extreme weather is expected to
increase in frequency and severity in the years to come. By 2050, Toronto is
expected to see:
- the maximum daily temperature rise to 44°C, from 37°C today;
- 66 days above 30°C, versus 20 days today;
- four times as many extended heatwaves per year; and
- significantly more intense rainfalls, with the daily maximum rainfall
rising to 166 mm, from 66 mm.
Know the risks, take action, improve your resilience

NO TAV! Italian Direct Action Campaign vs. High Speed Rail Megaproject
Wednesday June 22, 5:30 - 8 p.m.
OISE, 252 Bloor Street West
The No TAV movement (the Movement) was established over 25 years ago in Susa
Valley, Italy in opposition to the proposed Turin-Lyon high-speed/high
capacity railway project, referred to as TAV (treno di alta velocità).
Resistance to the project is rooted in environmental, health, quality of
life and economic issues. It uses diverse and creative methods including
land occupations and road occupations and proposes a different model of
ecologically sustainable, democratic, locally oriented economics. It has
become a symbol of alternative forms of democracy and economic development
on a national and European level. At the same time, it is an institutional
target with activists having faced terrorism charges. In fact, the work site
for an exploratory tunnel for the project has been under 24-hour military
surveillance since 2011. Within this context, the Movement has spear-headed
the formation of a transnational resistance network – the Forum Against
Unnecessary and Imposed Mega Projects – which works collectively on a
European and international level and will hold its 6th Forum in the Basque
country in July 2016. Such networks may provide a new avenue for democratic
participation and citizen engagement.

Let’s create the bank otherwise!
Wed Jun 22, 5:30 - 9:30 pm
192 Spadina Ave, Lounge
The Panama Papers narrative continues to attract worldwide media attention
and shine a light on the role of the banks in our society. To the extent
that we all have a bank account, one might ask what is our responsibility?
But do we really have the choice? For many of us, opening a bank account is
a necessity. But do we have a clear line of sight to where our money is
going and used for? Is the opacity of the banking system mandatory for it to
work? Could we, as customer, have more control and a sense of empowerment?
And what if a new player could enter the market, with different rules and
values and above all, the willingness to give citizens the power of his
means? Organized by Impak Finance and sponsored by the Centre for Social
Innovation, we invite you to a Co-Creation Workshop, in which we will
together generate ideas to create a massive paradigm shift and participate
in the emergence of an ambitious and innovative project

Making Through Local Living Economies
Fri. June 24, noon - 1 p.m.
Webinar
It’s been said that if you want to transform your community –throw a bigger
party! We need to reintroduce feeling and aliveness as the lifeblood of our
community. We have much to celebrate as our public life and the commons are
transformed through the influx of regenerative practices and innovative
ideas. Together these are contributing towards creating a sense of belonging
